The Best Quiz Games in 2027: 10 Picks for Classrooms, Teams, and Game Nights

Live quiz games have been around long enough that everyone has a favorite, and long enough that most of them have grown pricing pages taller than their question banks. In 2027 the field looks different from five years ago: AI question generation is table stakes, "free" often means "free for ten players", and privacy questions from schools are finally being taken seriously. 🎮

I spent the last few weeks running the same three sessions on every tool below: a 30-student classroom review, a 12-person team meeting ice-breaker, and a Friday game night with friends on their phones. Here is what held up.

🙋 Disclosure up front: I build Lobbuu, the first tool on this list. I have tried to be as fair to the others as I would want them to be to me, and the comparison table at the end is there so you can check my claims against your own needs.

🧭 How I judged them

Five things matter in a live quiz, in roughly this order:

1. ⏱️ Time from idea to first question. If writing the quiz takes longer than playing it, the tool has already lost.
2. 📱 Player onboarding. Can a 9-year-old, or a VP who forgot their password, join in under 20 seconds from a phone?
3. 💸 Pricing walls. What happens when the 21st player joins? Does the fun game mode live behind a subscription?
4. ⚡ Energy. Speed bonuses, streaks and a live leaderboard are what turn a form into a game.
5. 🔒 Privacy. Schools and companies now ask what happens to player data. The answer should be short.

1. 🐼 Lobbuu

🎯 Best for: anyone who wants a real-time quiz running in under a minute, with zero accounts.

Lobbuu is the tool I wish had existed when I started running quizzes. You type a topic, pick a difficulty and a language, and the AI generates the questions and answer options on the spot. If you already have material, you upload a PDF or your notes and it extracts a quiz from them. If you are a control freak, you write everything by hand and tune the timers to the second.

Players join with a six-character code or a QR code. No signup, no email, no app. Each player gets an auto-generated nickname like "Sleepy Panda", which removes the "what name do I type" pause and, in classrooms, the inappropriate-nickname problem. If someone's phone dies mid-game, they reconnect and get their identity and score back.

Scoring is built for energy: 100 base points for a correct answer, a speed bonus that shrinks linearly over the answer window, and a streak bonus for consecutive correct answers. A round ends as soon as everyone has answered, so nobody stares at a countdown. Quizzes can be replayed or edited from a history page, and the whole thing works in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese. 🌍

Pricing is the part that feels out of place in 2027: it is free. No player cap, no premium tier, no ads. Players' personal data is not collected and quizzes are stored temporarily.

⚠️ Where it falls short: it is young. There is no public question library to browse, no homework or self-paced mode, and no integrations with Slides or Teams. Duels and power-ups are on the roadmap but not shipped.

💧 For the developers reading this on dev.to: Lobbuu is built with Elixir and Phoenix LiveView. Every player holds one WebSocket, game state lives in a process per game on the BEAM, and PubSub fans events out to the room. That is why a 30-player round ending "as soon as everyone has answered" feels instant rather than polled.

2. 🎵 Kahoot!

🎯 Best for: classrooms that already know the drill.

Kahoot! is still the reference. Kids recognize the music, teachers know the flow, and the public library covers almost any topic. The AI question generator is solid and the reports are the most complete on this list.

⚠️ Where it falls short: the free plan caps participants, and the caps have moved more than once. The most engaging game modes and document import live in paid tiers, and the host needs an account. It is a great product with a pricing page you need to read carefully.

3. 📚 Wayground (formerly Quizizz)

🎯 Best for: teachers who want live play and homework in the same tool.

Wayground's killer feature is still the self-paced mode: assign a quiz, students play it on their own schedule, you get the data. The AI can generate questions from a topic or from a document, and the library is enormous.

⚠️ Where it falls short: the interface is busy, and a growing list of features is gated behind the school plan. Rebranding from Quizizz to Wayground confused a lot of teachers and search results.

4. 🏰 Blooket

🎯 Best for: K-12 classes that want a game first and a quiz second.

Blooket wraps question sets in game modes: tower defense, gold rush, racing. Students collect "Blooks" and genuinely ask to play again. For younger classes it is the highest-engagement tool here.

⚠️ Where it falls short: the questions are almost incidental. For adults or for serious review it feels chaotic, and the best modes and higher player counts sit in the paid plan.

5. 💰 Gimkit

🎯 Best for: middle and high school classes that like strategy.

Gimkit gives students in-game currency for correct answers and lets them spend it on upgrades and power-ups. Modes like Trust No One turn a review session into a social deduction game. It was built by a high school student and it shows in the best way.

⚠️ Where it falls short: hosts hit limits quickly on the free plan, and it is squarely a school product. Running a corporate ice-breaker on it feels odd.

6. 📊 Mentimeter

🎯 Best for: presenters who want a quiz inside their slides.

Mentimeter is a presentation tool first. Polls, word clouds and Q&A sit next to the quiz competition, and the results look good on a projector in a boardroom. The AI builder can draft a deck from a prompt.

⚠️ Where it falls short: the quiz is one feature among many, participant limits on the free plan are tight, and the pricing is aimed at companies, not teachers or friends.

7. 🗳️ Slido

🎯 Best for: teams already living in Webex, PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Slido's quizzes are simple and reliable, and the integrations are the reason to pick it. If your all-hands runs on Webex or your training runs on PowerPoint, Slido is already there.

⚠️ Where it falls short: it is a Q&A and polling tool with a quiz bolted on. There are no speed bonuses or streaks, so it never quite becomes a game.

8. 🃏 Quizlet Live

🎯 Best for: classes that already use Quizlet flashcards.

Quizlet Live turns any flashcard set into a team game where students must collaborate to answer. It is a smart twist: nobody can win alone, so the quiet kids get pulled in.

⚠️ Where it falls short: you need a Quizlet set to start, teams need a minimum number of players, and it is classroom-only by design.

9. 🎤 Crowdpurr

🎯 Best for: live events, bar trivia and big screens.

Crowdpurr is built for crowds: hundreds of people answering on their phones while the leaderboard runs on a stage screen. The trivia mode and the audience-facing display are the most polished for events.

⚠️ Where it falls short: the free plan is small, and it is overkill for a classroom or a living room.

10. 🎡 AhaSlides

🎯 Best for: anyone who wants Mentimeter's feature set on a smaller budget.

AhaSlides covers the same ground as Mentimeter, quizzes included, at a lower price point, with a spinner wheel and other party features thrown in.

⚠️ Where it falls short: less polish, and the same "quiz is one slide type among many" feeling.

📋 Side by side

Plans and features change often. Treat this table as a starting point and check each vendor's pricing page before you commit a classroom or a company to it.

🤔 Which one should you pick?

• 🏫 You teach and your school already pays for something. Use it. Kahoot!, Wayground and Blooket are all good, and switching costs are real.
• 🎒 You teach and nobody pays for anything. Lobbuu, then Quizlet Live if your material is already in flashcards.
• 💼 You run team meetings. Slido if you live in Webex or PowerPoint, Mentimeter if you want polls too, Lobbuu if you just want people laughing at "Grumpy Otter" taking the lead.
• 🎉 You are hosting a game night. Lobbuu. Nobody at a party wants to create an account.
• 📖 You are revising alone. Upload your notes to Lobbuu or Wayground and quiz yourself.

🔭 The trend to watch

The tools that will matter in 2027 and beyond are the ones that remove steps. Generating questions from a topic or a document used to be the differentiator. Now it is expected, and the friction has moved to onboarding and pricing: how many taps before a player is in, and what happens when the room fills up.

That is the bet behind Lobbuu: keep the game fast, keep the players anonymous, and keep the price at zero. If you try it, I would love to hear what broke and what you wished it did. I read every comment here and every message on lobbuu.com. 🚀
