Watches and the origin of their movements
The watchmaking sector has a relatively favourable democratic geography: the world's best mechanical movement manufacturers are in Switzerland (EIU 9.15) and Japan (EIU 8.40). ETA and Sellita movements in Switzerland, and Miyota, Seiko NH and Orient in Japan, form the basis of most quality market watches.
The democratic threat in watchmaking comes from the low-cost segment, where Chinese movements (Seagull, Shanghai Watch, ST) manufactured in China (EIU 2.12) are increasingly technically competitive but remain of non-democratic origin. The price difference is significant: an ETA 2824-2 movement costs €60–100 at factory price; an equivalent Seagull movement costs €15–25.
This article analyses the watchmaking sector from the democratic perspective, focusing on movements, cases and straps.
Movements and their democratic origin
ETA SA — Switzerland (9.15). The world's largest watch movement manufacturer, Swatch Group-owned. Its ETA 2824-2 (automatic), ETA 6498-1 (manual) and ETA 955.112 (quartz) calibres are the basis of thousands of brands. Manufactured in Grenchen (Solothurn, Switzerland). Completely democratic origin.
Sellita — Switzerland (9.15). The independent Swiss automatic movement manufacturer, ETA competitor. Its SW200-1 and SW300-1 calibres are compatible with equivalent ETAs. Manufactured in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Neuchâtel, Switzerland). Democratic origin.
Miyota — Japan (8.40). Citizen Watch's Japanese movement manufacturer. Its 9015 (high-end automatic), 8215 (mid-range automatic) and quartz 2000 series calibres form the basis of brands like Alpina, Longines (some models) and independent brands. Manufactured in Kitakami (Iwate, Japan). Democratic origin.
Seiko NH — Japan (8.40). The Seiko NH35 and NH36 automatic movements are the most used in the Japanese independent watch segment. Manufactured in Shizukuishi (Iwate) by Seiko Instruments. Democratic origin.
Ronda — Switzerland (9.15). The Swiss quartz movement reference manufacturer for the mid-range segment. Its Ronda 715 and Ronda 715 Startech calibres are used by independent Swiss brands. Manufactured in Lausen (Basel, Switzerland). Democratic origin.
Seagull / Shanghai Watch — China (2.12). Chinese manufacturers of low-cost mechanical movements. Technically competent but of non-democratic origin. Not verified on Democratic Market.
Watch brands with the greatest democratic traceability
Nomos Glashütte — Germany (8.58). The Glashütte (Saxony, Germany) watch brand with the highest degree of in-house manufacturing. Its Alpha, Epsilon, Zeta and Lambda movements are designed and manufactured in Glashütte. 95% of the movement is of German origin. Price: €1,500–4,000.
Tissot — Switzerland (9.15). The Swatch Group Swiss brand with the best quality/price ratio. ETA/Swatch movements, manufactured in Le Locle (Switzerland). Price: €200–800.
Seiko — Japan (8.40). The Japanese reference for affordable mechanical watches. Japanese-manufactured Seiko NH movements. Price: €150–1,000.
Orient — Japan (8.40). Seiko-owned. High-quality watches at very accessible prices, manufactured in Japan with Orient's own movements. Price: €100–400.
Baltic — France (7.99). The French watch brand with Japanese Miyota movements, European-origin steel cases. Price: €400–800.
Sinn — Germany (8.58). The Frankfurt functional watch brand, founded in 1961. German steel cases, ETA or Sellita movements. Manufacturing in Frankfurt. Price: €700–3,000.
Cases and straps
Stainless steel cases: watchmaking-grade 316L steel is manufactured by Outokumpu (Finland, 9.20) or Ugine & ALZ (France, 7.99). First-tier watch cases are machined in Switzerland or Germany with this steel.
Sapphire crystals: synthetic sapphire for watch glasses is manufactured by Rubis Précis (Switzerland), Kyocera (Japan, 8.40) or Citizen Crystals (Japan). Low-cost cases use mineral glass or acrylic.
Leather straps: quality strap leather comes from Weinheim tanneries (Germany, 8.58) or France Alligator (France, 7.99) for exotic skins. Low-cost leather straps are of Chinese or Bangladeshi origin.
Rubber/NATO straps: quality rubber for straps is of European (Tropic, Switzerland) or Japanese origin. Quality NATO straps are made from Cordura nylon (Invista, US) woven in the UK.
Why Swiss and Japanese watches hold their ground
The watchmaking sector has something unusual: democratic country manufacturers are world quality leaders. Not like in many other sectors, where Chinese quality approaches European. In watchmaking, mechanical complexity, manufacturing tolerance (microns) and the knowledge accumulated in centuries of Swiss and Japanese watchmaking craftsmanship is difficult to replicate.
The consequence is that choosing a watch with a Swiss or Japanese movement is not just a democratic choice: it is also a superior quality choice resulting in greater durability and maintainability over decades.
Democratic Market lists watches with ETA, Sellita, Miyota, Seiko NH movements or manufactured in Germany (Nomos/Glashütte), verified democratic-origin steel cases and traceable-material straps. Because even measuring time can have a verified origin.
