Organizations tend to have hundreds or even thousands of technology assets functioning behind the scene. Laptops get allocated to employees, software gets utilized by teams, equipment undergoes replacements, licenses require attention, and aging assets near their retirement date.
Asset management helps maintain control of all these activities.
This is the idea behind IT Asset Management (ITAM).
For individuals seeking Best ServiceNow ITAM Training in Bangalore at TechMyIndia, understanding the ITAM concept goes beyond simply comprehending another software platform.
ITAM essentially revolves around the idea of understanding the organization's technology assets and how a digital platform can facilitate the management process.
Start With the Asset, Not the Software
Let's assume there is a need to purchase a laptop for an employee.
The narrative of this laptop is far from over as the purchasing process concludes.
Somebody will have to record the asset, allocate it to the employee, store information, address changes, and handle its retirement or replacement.
This is only for a single laptop, and there are hundreds or even thousands of similar assets in most organizations.
Such an insight already explains the very basics of ITAM.
The ServiceNow platform essentially addresses IT-specific processes, and ITAM happens to be one of them, allowing students to build an understanding of how asset-related activities and information can be handled within this digital environment.
What Exactly Does ITAM Stand For?
ITAM is an expansion of Information Technology Asset Management .
In essence, it refers to the management of technology assets belonging to an organization.
These assets can include computers, laptops, servers, software, software licenses, and other similar resources.
It is important to understand that ITAM involves much more than simply entering asset names and titles into spreadsheets .
Instead, the focus is on the ability to store relevant information pertaining to each asset and understanding its relevance.
Why Should You Pay Attention to ServiceNow ITAM?

Hardware Asset Management Is Only a Part of ITAM
When most people consider the term 'IT asset' , they tend to think of laptops and computers.
While hardware is indeed an integral aspect of asset management, it only constitutes a small segment of the larger concept.
Organizations often have to deal with software and licenses.
For instance, there is a need to understand the software landscape and licenses in cases where multiple departments utilize a common product.
There is also scope to explore the concept of Software Asset Management .
Such an insight can only augment one's understanding of ITAM as a whole.
The Lifecycle Approach to ITAM
There is no better way to understand ITAM than to examine the lifecycle of an asset.
A generalized version of the IT asset lifecycle can be written as:
Acquire ā Record ā Deploy ā Use ā Maintain ā Change/Transfer ā Retire
It must be noted that the lifecycle can vary from one organization to another.
The important point is that an asset has a lifecycle, and ITAM requires a person to store and maintain relevant information pertaining to each stage.
Such an approach makes the ServiceNow ITAM course easier to grasp, as opposed to a mere understanding of discrete concepts.

Learn About Scenarios That Require Asset Management
Let's assume that an employee quits the organization.
The laptop allocated to this employee cannot simply be erased from the system.
The organization will have to decide on the next set of actions:
Who has possession of the device?
What is the asset status?
Will the device be retrieved?
What will happen after it is retrieved?
Can it be reallocated?
Will this reallocation require any changes to the asset record?
These are just a few of the questions that can help a learner to better understand the concept.
As a result, it becomes possible to identify the relevance of asset management activities within the workplace.
