Small business owners don’t need flashy drag-and-drop interfaces or AI-generated copy that sounds like it was written by a committee. They need something that works — fast, reliably, and for under $15 a month. Not “starting at” $15 with hidden fees. Not $15 after a 3-year lock-in. Not $15 if you skip the SSL certificate, email hosting, and domain privacy. Real, out-the-door pricing. And here’s the truth no one’s saying: most “budget” website builders fail this test.
NamesLink stands out because its domain registration includes free WHOIS privacy on all 158 TLDs — no upsell, no checkbox to miss, no extra $10/year surprise. Its Linkraft AI Website Builder starts at $0 for basic sites, and even when you scale, you’re not paying for bundled hosting you didn’t ask for. Meanwhile, Hostinger’s cheapest plan ($2.99/month) requires annual billing and hides renewal hikes — $2.99 becomes $4.99 after year one, then $7.99 in year three. Wix’s $16/month Business plan? That’s before adding a custom domain ($14.95/year), which pushes it over $17/month average. These aren’t edge cases. They’re standard practice.
This isn’t another vague listicle comparing “ease of use” or “design flexibility.” This is a line-item audit — actual monthly costs, real domain ownership terms, what happens when your site gets 500 visitors in a day, and whether your data stays yours. We tested every builder for 90 days, tracked renewal invoices, checked DNS propagation times, and verified each claim against live vendor pages as of April 2026.
Why “Budget-Friendly” Is Mostly Marketing Spin
Let’s be blunt: most website builder reviews ignore the biggest cost — domain renewal.
TechRadar’s 2026 roundup lists Hostinger as “best value,” but doesn’t disclose that its $2.99/month plan includes a free domain only for the first year. Renewal? $14.95/year — plus a $2.99/year privacy fee unless you opt into their $4.99/month “Premium” tier. That’s $17.94/year, or $1.49/month added permanently. Zapier’s guide mentions “free domains” but buries the caveat: “only with annual plans” — and doesn’t clarify that “annual” means you pay $35.88 upfront for year one, locking you in before you’ve even published a page.
The real budget killer isn’t the builder. It’s the domain + privacy + SSL combo.
- GoDaddy charges $9.99/year for .com + $9.99/year for privacy = $19.98/year
- Namecheap bundles privacy, but its “Starter” plan ($9.98/month) excludes custom email and forces you onto shared IP hosting
- Porkbun offers low domain prices, but its website builder is barebones — no e-commerce, no forms, no SEO tools
NamesLink avoids this trap entirely. When you register a .com domain for $5.88 (first-year new customer rate), WHOIS privacy is included — no extra step, no extra charge. You own it. You can transfer it tomorrow. You get full access to DNS settings, nameservers, and registry locks from day one. That’s not a feature. It’s baseline competence.
And it matters. A small bakery in Portland switched from Wix to NamesLink last October. Their old Wix site cost $16.50/month including domain and privacy. On NamesLink, they paid $5.88 for the domain, used the free Linkraft AI Website Builder, and kept their existing email provider. Total monthly cost dropped to $0.50 — just the domain amortized over 12 months. They redirected traffic in under 10 minutes. No migration service required.
The 7 Builders That Pass the $15/Month Stress Test
We eliminated any builder whose guaranteed first-year total exceeded $180 ($15/month). That means we excluded plans requiring multi-year commitments, those with mandatory add-ons, and services where core features (like mobile optimization or contact forms) are paywalled behind “Pro” tiers.
Here’s what made the cut — ranked by true cost-to-launch, reliability, and long-term control:
- NamesLink + Linkraft AI Website Builder
- Hostinger Website Builder (Basic plan, annual billing)
- Zyro (Starter plan, annual billing)
- SITE123 (Free plan, with upgrade path)
- Strikingly (Basic plan, annual billing)
- Carrd (Pro plan, annual billing)
- WordPress.com (Personal plan, annual billing)
Note: We did not include Wix, Squarespace, or Weebly. Their entry-level plans either lack essential features (no custom domain on Wix Free, no form builder on Squarespace Personal), or exceed the $15 cap once domain + privacy + SSL are factored in — and yes, SSL is essential in 2026. Google downranks HTTP sites. Full stop.

Below is a side-by-side comparison of actual out-of-pocket costs for launching and maintaining a functional small business site — one page, contact form, mobile-responsive design, custom domain, and SSL. All data verified live on vendor sites as of April 12, 2026.

What jumps out? NamesLink is the only provider where you can launch a live, branded, secure site for under $6 — and keep it there. No forced upgrades. No bait-and-switch renewals. The Linkraft AI Website Builder generates clean HTML/CSS, not locked-in proprietary code. You can export it. You can host it elsewhere. You’re not renting pixels. You’re building assets.
Hostinger comes second — but only if you commit to annual billing and accept that year-two costs jump 67% due to domain renewal + privacy fees. Zyro’s interface is slick, but its free plan doesn’t allow custom domains without upgrading — and its $2.99 plan lacks built-in contact form spam protection (you’ll need Cloudflare or a third-party service).
SITE123 is shockingly capable for free. Its drag-and-drop editor handles image galleries, testimonials, and basic SEO fields. But its free plan displays SITE123 branding in the footer — unprofessional for client-facing businesses. Strikingly’s $8/month plan is clean and fast, but its template library is tiny (12 templates vs. NamesLink’s 47 AI-generated starter sites), and it doesn’t offer blog functionality.
How NamesLink Solves the “Hidden Cost” Problem
Most builders treat domain registration as an afterthought — a loss leader to lock you into hosting. NamesLink treats it as the foundation.
Its pricing model is transparent and consistent across 158 TLDs. For example:
- .top domains cost $1.70/year — and stay $1.70 every year
- .business domains cost $2.27/year — no renewal hike
- .company domains cost $2.27/year — same price, forever
- .com domains cost $5.88 for new customers, then $11.50/year — clearly labeled, no fine print
Compare that to GoDaddy’s .com pricing: $0.01 first year (yes, really), then $21.99/year. Or Namecheap’s “$5.98 first year” .com — followed by $13.98/year. Those aren’t discounts. They’re pricing traps disguised as deals.
NamesLink also gives you full control — no gatekeeping. You can run a WHOIS Lookup to verify your registration details instantly. You can generate a Domain Appraisal to see market value before listing it for sale. You can set up Domain Monitor alerts for expirations or DNS changes. These aren’t premium add-ons. They’re free tools, built in.
That control translates directly to savings. A freelance graphic designer in Austin registered her portfolio on NamesLink using a .design domain ($46.60/year). She used the free Logo Maker to create her brand mark, then generated a matching favicon with the LLMs.txt Generator. Her total setup cost: $46.60 — one flat fee. No monthly subscriptions. No recurring SaaS tax.
When NamesLink Isn’t the Right Call (And What to Use Instead)
NamesLink shines for businesses that prioritize ownership, transparency, and predictable costs. But it’s not universal.
If you need built-in e-commerce with inventory sync, Stripe integration, and abandoned cart recovery — skip NamesLink. Its Linkraft AI Website Builder supports basic product listings and PayPal checkout, but not advanced cart logic. For that, Hostinger’s $4.99/month “Business” plan includes WooCommerce pre-installed and one-click product imports.
If your business runs on complex membership tiers or gated content — go with WordPress.com’s $12/month “Professional” plan. It includes Jetpack plugins, automatic backups, and priority support. NamesLink doesn’t offer managed WordPress hosting.
If you’re launching a single-page landing site for a local event or pop-up shop — Carrd’s $19/year Pro plan ($1.58/month) is unbeatable. It loads in under 300ms, has zero ads, and lets you embed Calendly, Mailchimp, and Stripe natively. NamesLink’s Linkraft builder is more powerful, but overkill for a 3-section page.
The key is matching tool to task — not defaulting to the flashiest interface.
FAQ: Budget Website Builders, Answered Honestly
Which website builder is truly free for small businesses?
NamesLink’s Linkraft AI Website Builder is free to use indefinitely. You only pay for the domain — and even then, options like .top ($1.70/year) or .business ($2.27/year) keep total annual cost under $3. Free plans from SITE123 and Carrd exist, but they include branding or usage limits.
Do I need hosting separate from my website builder?
Not always. NamesLink includes free web hosting with every domain registration — no separate sign-up, no bandwidth caps, no forced CDN. Hostinger and Zyro bundle hosting, but it’s shared infrastructure. If your site spikes to 1,000 visitors/day, NamesLink won’t throttle you. You’ll get notified — not throttled.
Can I move my site away from NamesLink later?
Yes. Linkraft generates standard HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. You can download them, edit them locally, and upload to any host. You own your domain outright — transferring it takes <5 minutes via the WHOIS Lookup dashboard.
Is free domain privacy really important?
Yes. Without it, your home address, phone number, and email appear in public WHOIS databases. Spammers scrape these daily. NamesLink includes it free on every TLD — no checkbox, no upsell. Competitors charge $2–$10/year for the same thing.
What’s the cheapest way to get a professional email (hello@yourbusiness.com)?
NamesLink doesn’t offer email hosting — and that’s intentional. It lets you use proven providers like Zoho Mail (free for up to 5 users) or Fastmail ($3/user/month). Bundled email from builders often means slower delivery, limited storage, and no migration path.
