Acupressure for Digestion: 7 TCM Points That Calm Your Gut

Digestive discomfort is one of the most common reasons people first explore Traditional Chinese Medicine. Whether it is post-meal bloating, erratic appetite, sluggish elimination, or that heavy, tired feeling after eating, TCM views these complaints as signs that the Spleen and Stomach system is working overtime. Acupressure, the gentle art of pressing specific points on the body, offers a practical way to support this system at home, with nothing more than your own fingertips and a few spare minutes. This guide walks you through seven classic points, why TCM values them, and how to build a simple daily routine around them.

Why TCM Puts Digestion at the Center of Health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Spleen and Stomach are described as the root of postnatal qi, meaning that after birth, nearly all the energy your body runs on is produced by transforming food into usable vitality. When this transformation is strong, you feel energized after meals, your thinking is clear, and your limbs feel strong. When it weakens, TCM texts describe fatigue after eating, loose stools, bloating, brain fog, and a tendency to worry. This framework explains why digestive symptoms are rarely treated in isolation. Instead of only asking what you ate, a TCM practitioner also asks how your body is processing it. Acupressure works within this framework by stimulating points along meridians connected to the Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine, encouraging smoother flow of qi and blood through the middle burner, the region TCM identifies as the digestive core of the torso.

Zusanli (ST-36), the Master Point of Longevity

Zusanli, located about four finger-widths below the kneecap and one finger-width lateral to the shin bone, is arguably the most famous acupoint in all of Chinese medicine. Classical texts praise it as a general tonic that strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, boosts qi production, and even lifts mood. Modern research on ST-36 has explored its role in modulating gut motility and gastrointestinal inflammation, which lines up neatly with its traditional reputation. To locate it accurately, sit with your knee bent, place four fingers directly under the bottom edge of your kneecap, and move one thumb-width toward the outside of your leg. Press firmly but comfortably for one to two minutes on each leg, using small circular motions. Many people describe a pleasant ache or a radiating warmth, which practitioners consider a sign the point is activated. Daily stimulation, especially before meals, is a gentle way to prime your digestive fire.

Zhongwan (CV-12), the Front Door of the Stomach

Zhongwan sits on the midline of the abdomen, halfway between the navel and the bottom of the sternum. Because it rests directly over the stomach, TCM classifies it as the influential point of the digestive organs, making it a first choice for bloating, acid regurgitation, and that stuffed feeling after heavy meals. The technique here is softer than on the legs: use the pads of three fingers, press gently inward, and make slow circles clockwise, which follows the direction of the large intestine and supports elimination. One to two minutes is enough. Practitioners often recommend doing this lying down before sleep, when the abdominal muscles relax and the pressure can reach deeper layers comfortably. If you feel pulsing under your fingers, that is completely normal and usually indicates healthy abdominal circulation responding to the stimulation.

Sanyinjiao (SP-6), Where Three Meridians Meet

Sanyinjiao, found four finger-widths above the inner ankle bone, just behind the shin bone, is the crossing point of the Spleen, Liver, and Kidney meridians. This triple junction makes it valuable for far more than digestion: it regulates the Spleen's transformative function, soothes Liver qi stagnation that often manifests as stress-related indigestion, and supports Kidney yang, which warms the digestive fire. People who notice that their digestion worsens under emotional stress often respond well to this point. Press firmly with your thumb for one minute on each leg, ideally in the evening. Because SP-6 has a documented connection to the lower abdomen and pelvic organs, TCM practitioners advise avoiding strong stimulation during pregnancy, a sensible precaution that reflects how influential this point is considered to be.

Tianshu (ST-25), the Pivot of the Intestines

Tianshu translates to celestial pivot, and the name fits: these paired points sit level with the navel, two finger-widths to either side, directly over the ascending and descending colon. They are the go-to points for intestinal complaints in TCM practice, used alternately for constipation and diarrhea, which may seem contradictory until you understand the logic. Rather than forcing movement in one direction, Tianshu is understood to regulate and normalize intestinal function, restoring rhythm whether it is too fast or too slow. Place both hands on your waist, let your thumbs fall to the points, and press inward while circling for one to two minutes. A common practice for sluggish mornings is to stimulate Tianshu right after waking, followed by a glass of warm water, a combination that many people find reliably encouraging for regular bowel movements.

Hegu (LI-4) and Neiguan (PC-6) for the Upper Burner

Not all digestive complaints originate in the intestines. Nausea, hiccups, and that queasy, carsick feeling live in what TCM calls the upper burner. Two points address this region effectively. Hegu, in the webbing between the thumb and index finger, is the master point of the Large Intestine meridian and is used for facial and abdominal complaints alike; it is also the point everyone reaching for headache relief seems to find instinctively. Neiguan, three finger-widths above the inner wrist crease, is famous for nausea relief, so much so that studies have examined it for motion sickness and postoperative recovery, and acupressure wristbands sold for travel sickness target exactly this location. Press either point with the opposite thumb for sixty seconds, breathing slowly. Neiguan in particular pairs beautifully with slow exhalation, which itself calms the diaphragm and the stomach beneath it. As with SP-6, avoid firm Hegu pressure during pregnancy.

Zulinqi (GB-34) and Your Daily Routine Structure

Rounding out the set is Zulinqi, more widely known as Yanglingquan (GB-34), located below the knobby head of the fibula on the outer lower leg. As the influential point of sinew and muscle in TCM, it supports the physical structure of digestion: the smooth muscle of the gut itself. Practitioners use it when digestive trouble comes with cramping or tension held in the torso. Beyond individual points, the real magic of acupressure comes from consistency. A sustainable routine might look like this: ST-36 and SP-6 with both thumbs while your morning water boils, CV-12 and ST-25 lying in bed at night, and PC-6 held quietly during any moment nausea strikes. Ten focused minutes daily beats an hour once a week, because the nervous system learns through repetition. Keep pressure comfortable, never bruising, and stop any technique that causes sharp pain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Digestive Acupressure

How long before acupressure works for digestion? Many people feel easing of bloating within a single session, but lasting change in chronic patterns usually requires two to four weeks of daily practice, which mirrors how TCM views the gradual strengthening of Spleen qi. Can I do acupressure right after eating? Light abdominal point work is best delayed about an hour after large meals, though leg points such as ST-36 are fine anytime. Is acupressure safe alongside medication? Yes, as a self-care practice it is generally safe, though it complements rather than replaces medical care for conditions like ulcers, gallstones, or unexplained weight loss, which deserve professional evaluation first. Should points feel painful? Expect a dull ache or warmth, described in TCM as de qi, but sharp pain means you are pressing too hard or slightly off location. Adjust and continue gently.
