The first thing that threw me about watching engineers join a Japanese dev team is how the day opens. Not with "hi," not with "good morning" past about ten. The Slack channel fills with a single phrase, over and over, and if you translate it word for word it sounds faintly insulting: "you must be tired."
The phrase is γη²γζ§γ§γ (otsukaresama desu). You will hear it and read it more than any other set of words at work. It opens messages, closes meetings, and marks people passing in a hallway. And for a while it feels like the one word nobody can quite explain, because the people saying it forty times a day have stopped noticing they're saying it at all.
What it literally says, and why that's a trap
Break it down and it looks alarming. η²γ (tsukare) is "tiredness." γ and ζ§ are politeness wrapped around it. So the literal reading is something like "you honorable tired one," or "you must be worn out." A learner's first instinct is to wonder why a colleague is greeting them by assuming they're exhausted, and whether the right response is to insist you feel fine.
That instinct is the trap. γη²γζ§γ§γ is not a comment on how you look. It's an acknowledgment of shared effort β closer in spirit to "thanks for the work you're putting in" than to anything about fatigue. The tiredness is notional. It's the same way "how do you do" in English isn't actually a question about your health. Nobody hearing it parses the literal words, and neither should you.
The reason it has no clean English translation is that English splits this job across several phrases. "Hi" opens a conversation. "Thanks" acknowledges effort. "Bye" or "have a good one" closes things out. Japanese workplace culture folds all three into one phrase whose real content is: we're in this work together, and I'm marking that. Once you stop translating it and start treating it as a social marker, it gets easy.
Where it actually shows up
The trouble with learning it from a dictionary is that the entry can't tell you it's everywhere. In practice, on a dev team, it turns up in roughly these moments:
Opening a Slack message. Instead of "Hi Tanaka-san, quick question," a message often just starts with γη²γζ§γ§γ on its own line, then the actual question. It's the written equivalent of clearing your throat politely before speaking. Skipping it doesn't break anything, but including it reads as normal and warm.
Passing someone or wrapping a call. When a meeting ends, people say it to each other as they drop off. When you finish a pairing session, same thing. It caps off the shared task.
Leaving for the day. This one has a small ritual attached. The person leaving first says γε γ«ε€±η€ΌγγΎγ (osaki ni shitsurei shimasu), roughly "excuse me for leaving before you," and the people staying reply γη²γζ§γ§γγ (otsukaresama deshita), the past-tense version, since your work for the day is done. If you've ever felt awkward being the first to log off, this is the phrase that makes it graceful.
In a review thread. It's common to open a review comment or a reply with it too, softening the shift into "here's my feedback."
γ§γ, γ§γγ, and the casual forms
There are a few variants worth keeping straight, because the ending carries timing and register.
γη²γζ§γ§γ (otsukaresama desu) is the safe default. Present tense, polite, works for almost anyone at almost any moment during the workday. If you only remember one form, remember this one.
γη²γζ§γ§γγ (otsukaresama deshita) is the past-tense version, for when the work is finished β end of the day, end of a meeting, end of a project. The switch from γ§γ to γ§γγ is the switch from "we're in it" to "that's done, well done."
γη²γ (otsukare) or γη²γγγΎ without the γ§γ is the casual form, for peers you're comfortable with. Fine in a team chat between engineers of the same level; too flat for a message to a client or a senior manager.
One landmine to know about. There's a similar-sounding phrase, γθ¦ε΄ζ§ (gokurΕsama), that also acknowledges someone's effort β but it carries a top-down feeling, something a boss says to a subordinate. Say it to your manager and it lands wrong. Stick with γη²γζ§γ§γ and you're never the one who picked the presumptuous phrase.
The two ways people get it wrong
The first is over-thinking the literal meaning and freezing, or worse, replying "I'm not tired." Don't defend against it. Just return it. Someone says γη²γζ§γ§γ, you say γη²γζ§γ§γ back. That's the whole exchange.
The second, and the one that quietly costs you more, is not using it at all. Because it's optional in the sense that no grammar breaks without it, a self-conscious learner tends to skip it and get straight to the point. To a Japanese team, a message that opens cold with just the request can read as a little brusque. The phrase is cheap and the goodwill is real. Use it more than you think you need to.
Why this is the stuff that's hard to pick up
The reason a phrase this common is also this hard to learn on your own is that it lives entirely in usage, not in textbooks. The dictionary gives you the words. It can't give you the forty daily repetitions, the exact moment in a Slack thread where it belongs, or the small difference between γ§γ and γ§γγ that tells everyone whether the work is ongoing or done. This is precisely the gap between the Japanese you study and the Japanese a team actually runs on.
That gap is the whole reason I built a course, Japanese for Software Engineers: Real Workplace Japanese. It covers the moments this phrase lives in β stand-ups, code reviews, Slack, incident reports, and the ε ±ι£ηΈ (hΕrensΕ) reporting culture underneath all of it β for engineers who already have the grammar (around N4βN3) but freeze up in the actual room. TL;DR
- γη²γζ§γ§γ (otsukaresama desu) is the most frequent phrase you'll hear on a Japanese dev team. One phrase does the job of "hi," "thanks," and "bye" at once, and what it's really marking is shared effort.
- Don't translate it literally. "You must be tired" is a trap; nobody hears the actual words. Just return it when it's said to you.
- Use γη²γζ§γ§γ during the day (ongoing work) and γη²γζ§γ§γγ when something's finished. γη²γ / γη²γγγΎ is the casual peer version.
- Leaving first? Say γε γ«ε€±η€ΌγγΎγ and you'll get γη²γζ§γ§γγ back.
- Avoid γθ¦ε΄ζ§ (gokurΕsama) toward anyone senior β it reads top-down.
- The real mistake is skipping it. It's cheap, the goodwill is real, and opening a message cold can read as brusque.
