How to Buy a Used Car in 2026 Without Getting Burned
I've helped friends buy over a dozen used cars. Here's the system I use to avoid the most common mistakes.
Start With a Pre-Purchase Inspection
Never skip this. A mechanic charging $150 for an inspection can save you $3,000 in hidden repairs. I once looked at a Honda Civic that drove perfectly — the inspection found a failing head gasket.
Most sellers will let you take the car for an inspection. If they refuse, walk away.
Check the Vehicle History
Carfax and AutoCheck are useful but incomplete. I've seen cars with clean histories that had clearly been in accidents. The previous owner paid out of pocket so it never hit the report.
Use the history report as one data point. Not the only one.
The Test Drive That Matters
Drive on the highway. Accelerate hard to check for transmission slip. Brake firmly from 60 mph to feel for warped rotors. Turn the wheel fully in both directions to listen for CV joint clicking.
Turn off the radio. Listen. Every rattle and clunk tells a story.
Price Negotiation in 2026
Dealers have more inventory than last year. Research prices on Kelley Blue Book and CarGurus before you offer.
Never pay asking price on a car listed for more than 2 weeks. If it's sitting, the seller is getting anxious.
Best Used Cars Right Now
Toyota Camry and Honda Accord remain the safest bets. Parts are cheap and they regularly reach 200,000 miles.
Mazda CX-5 offers near-luxury interior at mainstream prices. 2018-2021 models hit the depreciation sweet spot.
For fun: Mazda Miata and Subaru BRZ hold value well and are surprisingly reliable.
