Introduction To Bristol Harbour Cleanup
A decade of cleaning up Bristol Harbour has led to the discovery of a wide range of unusual items, from an inflatable doll to a Nintendo Switch. The voluntary clean-up group, Clean Up Bristol Harbour, was launched in September 2016 to remove plastic pollution from the harbour and its surrounding areas. The group's efforts have not only resulted in the removal of large amounts of waste but have also had a positive impact on the local community and wildlife.
Background And Methodology
The idea for the clean-up group was born out of a desire to address the significant amount of rubbish floating in the harbour. Founder Chloe Juyon was inspired to take action after witnessing the pollution firsthand while coxing on the River Avon at high tide. The group has since been taken on by adventure sports centre All Aboard Watersports, which has helped to coordinate the clean-up efforts. During recorded monitoring between 2021 and 2023, 236 volunteers removed over 880kg of waste from the harbour, with almost 390kg sent for recycling.
Unusual Finds And Community Impact
Over the years, volunteers have discovered a variety of unusual items, including a message in a bottle containing a note in Spanish, a kettle, tennis balls, glasses, and single shoes. The group has also found more mundane items, such as plastic packaging, bottles, cans, and takeaway rubbish. The clean-up efforts have not only improved the appearance of the harbour but have also had a positive impact on the local community. The group's work has helped to promote a sense of community and has inspired others to take action to protect the environment.
Future Outlook And Funding
Despite the success of the clean-up group, its future is uncertain due to a lack of funding. All Aboard Watersports has launched a Crowdfunder bid to raise £5,000 to help continue the project. The group is also hosting a community clean-up event to mark World Cleanup Day, which will include a self-guided litter pick and the opportunity for members of the public to get involved. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the harbour clean and to promote the group's work.
Conclusion And Legacy
The Clean Up Bristol Harbour group has made a significant impact on the local community and environment over the past decade. The group's efforts have helped to remove large amounts of waste from the harbour, promote a sense of community, and inspire others to take action to protect the environment. As the group looks to the future, it is clear that its work is far from over. With continued funding and support, the group can continue to make a positive impact and help to keep the harbour clean for generations to come.
