ETIAS vs. Visa: What's the Difference?

The real question: do you need a visa, or just ETIAS later?

Travellers searching "ETIAS vs visa" are usually asking one practical question: what do I actually need to enter Europe? The answer depends entirely on your nationality, and it splits the world into two groups:

Visa-exempt nationalities — around 60 countries and territories, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico. You can enter the Schengen Area today with just a passport, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Once ETIAS launches, you'll add a quick online authorisation before travelling — but you will never need a Schengen visa for short stays.
Visa-required nationalities — everyone else, including India, China, Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa. You need a Schengen visa from a consulate before every trip, today and after ETIAS launches alike. ETIAS will not apply to you at all — it is exclusively for the visa-exempt group.

ETIAS is not a visa

This point matters enough to state plainly: ETIAS is a travel authorisation, not a visa. It is the EU's counterpart to the US ESTA and the UK ETA — a pre-travel security screening for people who already have the right to visit visa-free. It involves no consulate, no interview, no biometrics appointment, and no documents beyond your passport details. It also grants nothing a visa grants: it doesn't guarantee entry (border officers decide that), and it doesn't extend the 90/180-day limit by a single day.

What a Schengen visa actually involves

A Schengen visa (the short-stay "type C" visa) is a genuine consular process:

Cost: €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–12, per the European Commission's current fee schedule — plus service fees if you apply through an outsourced visa centre.
Process: an application form, an in-person appointment at a consulate or visa centre, fingerprint collection, and supporting documents — travel itinerary, accommodation, proof of funds, and travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 coverage.
Timing: decisions officially take up to 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 in some cases — and appointment slots themselves can be scarce in busy seasons, so realistic lead time is often longer.
Validity: typically tied to your specific trip dates, though frequent travellers with clean histories may receive multiple-entry visas valid for one to five years. Stays remain capped at 90 days per 180 either way.

Where you apply matters too

A Schengen visa isn't applied for "to Europe" in the abstract — you apply to the consulate of your main destination, the country where you'll spend the most nights (or, if stays are equal, the country of first entry). Apply to the wrong country's consulate and the application can be refused as inadmissible before anyone reads it. Once issued, though, the visa works like the visa-free regime does: it lets you move throughout the whole Schengen Area, with all countries drawing on the same 90-day allowance.

What ETIAS will be — when it finally opens

For the visa-exempt group, ETIAS will be a much lighter formality:

Cost: €20, and free for applicants under 18 or over 70.
Process: a single online form, expected to take about 10 minutes, with no appointment and no documents beyond your passport.
Timing: the EU expects the vast majority of applications to be approved within minutes; a minority may take up to 96 hours, or longer if additional information is requested.
Validity: three years (or until your passport expires), covering unlimited short trips to 30 European countries — the Schengen Area plus Cyprus.
Stay limit: unchanged — the 90/180 rule applies exactly as it does today.

Today's reality (July 2026): no ETIAS exists yet

Here is the part many websites blur: ETIAS is not operational, and it currently has no launch date. In July 2026 the EU removed its previous "last quarter of 2026" target from the official ETIAS site without announcing a replacement — no launch date has been published since. Until launch:

Visa-exempt travellers continue entering Europe exactly as before — passport only, no authorisation, no fee. (Since October 2025 you will be biometrically registered at the border by the Entry/Exit System, but that requires nothing in advance.)
It is impossible to file an ETIAS application today — anywhere. The EU has warned that any website claiming to accept ETIAS applications or "pre-registrations" now is illegitimate. If a site asks for money for ETIAS in 2026, it is a scam. Charta Visa is a private visa-assistance service, and we will not accept ETIAS applications until the official system opens.
Visa-required travellers are equally unaffected: the Schengen visa process continues unchanged.

Side by side: ETIAS (when live) vs Schengen visa

Who needs it: ETIAS — visa-exempt nationalities only. Schengen visa — visa-required nationalities.
Cost: ETIAS — €20 (free under 18 / over 70). Schengen visa — €90 adults, €45 children 6–12, plus possible service fees.
Process: ETIAS — online form, minutes. Schengen visa — consular appointment, biometrics, documents.
Decision time: ETIAS — mostly minutes, up to 96 hours. Schengen visa — up to 15 days, extendable to 45.
Validity: ETIAS — 3 years, multiple trips. Schengen visa — usually per trip; multi-year only for trusted frequent travellers.
Stay limit: identical — 90 days in any 180 for both.
What it is: ETIAS — an entry pre-check for people who already travel visa-free. Schengen visa — the permission to travel itself.

So which one applies to you?

Run your passport and destination through our free visa checker. If you're visa-exempt for Europe, there is nothing to do for Schengen today — and we'll say so plainly; you may still need an authorisation we can help with for other destinations, like the US ESTA, UK ETA, or Canada eTA (see all requirements by nationality). If you're visa-required, your route is the consular Schengen visa applied for through the relevant country's consulate or visa centre — an official process no third party can shortcut. FAQ

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation — an online pre-check for nationalities that already travel to Europe visa-free, similar to the US ESTA or UK ETA. It involves no consulate, no biometrics appointment, and no interview.

Does ETIAS replace the Schengen visa?

No. ETIAS only applies to travellers who are already visa-exempt. If your nationality needs a Schengen visa, you will still need one after ETIAS launches — nothing changes for you.

Can I apply for ETIAS now?

No. ETIAS is not operational and no application can be filed anywhere. The EU warns that any website claiming to accept ETIAS applications or pre-registrations today is illegitimate.

When will ETIAS launch?

There is currently no confirmed launch date. In July 2026 the EU removed its late-2026 target from the official ETIAS website without setting a new one, and no launch date has been published since.

How much does a Schengen visa cost compared to ETIAS?

A Schengen visa costs €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–12, per the European Commission. ETIAS will cost €20 and be free for applicants under 18 or over 70.

Can I work in Europe with ETIAS or a Schengen visa?

No. Both cover short stays only — tourism, business meetings, transit — capped at 90 days in any 180. Working, studying, or living in Europe requires a national long-stay visa or permit.
