Rive AI Companion Animation: Lip Sync, States, and Developer Handoff

Your AI has a voice. Give it a face.

Building an AI tutor, voice assistant, or companion app? The character on screen should help users understand what your product is doing.

Is it listening? Preparing a response? Speaking? Waiting for a connection?

A thoughtfully animated character can make these moments easier to understand while giving your product a recognizable personality.

I’m Praneeth, a Rive animator and founder of Mascot Engine. I create custom interactive mascots and AI companion animations for app founders, developers, and product teams.

Here is how I would plan an AI character animation system—from the first interaction to developer handoff.

1. Start with what your character needs to communicate

Before creating a large animation library, identify the moments your users will encounter.

For an initial AI companion, I would consider these states:

This is a suggested design, not a required Rive convention. Your product may need fewer states or additional ones.

Connect the character’s behaviour to actual application events.

A character should not appear to be listening when the microphone is unavailable. It should not continue talking after audio playback stops.

Keep readable status text available too. Expressions should support the interface rather than communicate every detail on their own.

2. Understand where Rive fits

Rive state machines connect animations and define the logic for transitions between them. They can help a character move between behaviours as your application changes state.

Read the official Rive state machine documentation.

For an AI companion, I would separate responsibilities like this:

• Application: manages the conversation, microphone, network requests, and audio playback.
• Animation system: displays activity, expressions, mouth movement, and reactions.
• Integration layer: translates application events into the character controls agreed with the animator.

Rive also supports data binding through View Models, connecting data to properties in a scene. Agree on the data structure before implementation so everyone knows which values control which behaviours.

Read the official Rive data binding documentation.

The character does not need to understand the conversation independently. Your application provides the signals that drive its behaviour.

3. Choose the right lip-sync approach

“Make the character talk” can mean several different things.

Define the expected behaviour before animation production begins.

Option A: A repeating talking animation

A fixed mouth loop communicates that the character is speaking.

However, it does not synchronize mouth movement with the actual audio. This may work for a concept preview, but the scope should describe it accurately.

Option B: Audio-driven mouth opening

For a simple stylized companion, a mouth-opening control can respond to the level of the character’s playback audio.

An example control contract:

These are example names and values—not built-in Rive lip-sync controls.

The animator authors the control, and the application supplies its changing value.

Agree on:

• How silence closes the mouth.
• How the movement is smoothed.
• How mouth movement follows playback timing.
• What happens when speech is interrupted.

Audio-level control follows speech energy. It does not identify individual speech sounds.

Option C: Viseme-based mouth shapes

A viseme system uses different visual mouth shapes for speech sounds.

The character needs an agreed set of shapes, while the application needs suitable timing data from the speech pipeline or an analysis step.

Plan shape mapping, transitions, and synchronization together.

More mouth shapes introduce additional production and integration work. Choose this approach when the extra detail matters to your character and product.

Need help planning your Rive mascot?

At Mascot Engine, I work on character design, 2D rigging, expressions, Rive animation systems, and lip-sync controls.

Already have a mascot illustration? I can assess what needs to be prepared for animation.

Starting with an idea? We can define the character and its core interactions first.

4. Define the developer handoff early

A useful handoff explains how to operate the character.

Here is a sample specification to discuss with your animator:

This is a proposed animation contract, not an SDK API. Final names, types, and binding mechanisms depend on the authored file and selected runtime.

Ask for:

• Exact artboard and state-machine names.
• Relevant View Model or control paths.
• Default values and supported ranges.
• State and expression mappings.
• Expected transition behaviour.
• A short integration test sequence.

Define what happens when events arrive quickly.

If a user interrupts the AI, the mouth should stop with the audio and the character should move into the appropriate next state.

Test that behaviour deliberately.

5. Plan for Flutter, React Native, or web

Rive provides runtimes for platforms including Flutter, React Native, React, and web.

Feature support can differ by runtime and renderer. Confirm compatibility with the version your team actually uses.

See the official Rive runtime guide.

Include these details in your animation brief:

• Platform and runtime version.
• Target devices.
• Character display size.
• Background and interface layout.
• Required interactions.
• Performance expectations.

A large desktop preview does not tell you whether an expression reads clearly inside a small mobile interface.

Test the character in the actual product layout.

6. Test the moments that can break the illusion

A polished idle animation is only one part of the experience.

Before release, check that:

• [ ] The mouth closes during silence.
• [ ] Speaking starts when audio plays.
• [ ] Cancelling playback stops mouth movement.
• [ ] Listening and error states remain visually distinct.
• [ ] Rapid state changes do not leave the character stuck.
• [ ] Backgrounding and resuming the app restores a sensible state.
• [ ] Reduced-motion behaviour and text status alternatives are defined.
• [ ] Performance is acceptable on representative target devices.

These checks make the animation behaviour easier to assess alongside the rest of the application.

7. What affects the cost of a custom Rive mascot?

A useful quote starts with scope, not just an animation count.

The work involved depends on:

• Character design complexity.
• Preparation of existing artwork.
• Rigging requirements.
• Number of states and expressions.
• Transition and interruption behaviour.
• Lip-sync method.
• Character variations or growth stages.
• Documentation, testing, and revision scope.

For an initial release, I would consider a core version with ready, listening, thinking, speaking, and a clear fallback state.

Add celebrations, outfits, growth stages, or extra emotions when your product needs them.

Ask for a quote that explains what is included, what your developer will implement, and how revisions and testing will be handled.
