Ubuntu 26.10 will ship a pre-release Linux 7.3

Ubuntu 26.10 will ship with Linux 7.3 rather than the 7.2 kernel Canonical originally picked. The release lands on October 15, 2026, and Linux 7.3 is not expected to be declared stable until October 18. The installer images will therefore carry a release candidate rather than a finished kernel.

Canonical made the switch on September 1, 2026, writing on the Ubuntu Community Hub that "Ubuntu 26.10 will now target the Linux 7.3 kernel instead of 7.2." Phoronix reported the change on September 18.

Why the target moved

The original plan was set on May 27, 2026. It chose Linux 7.2, which was expected to reach mainline release on August 30.

That kernel arrived on schedule. Canonical's reasoning is that upstream has been running on time, so the next kernel is a safe bet. Phoronix reports the decision followed two cycles, 7.1 and 7.2, that showed no delays.

The trigger was a release candidate appearing before Canonical's selection deadline. The Community Hub post credits the timely release of 7.3-rc1. OMG Ubuntu reports that 7.3-rc2 was the build available at the deadline. The two accounts differ on which candidate, and neither changes the outcome.

Kleber Souza of Canonical gave the reason in the announcement. The change "keeps us aligned with the latest upstream capabilities, particularly for the latest hardware support," he said. Canonical adds that it stays "on track for our upcoming release milestones."

The calendar is the story

Interim Ubuntu releases follow a policy set in 2024, starting with 24.10. It targets the kernel that is still in development during the Ubuntu cycle, rather than the newest finished one. That policy is what puts a release candidate on the image.

Date	Milestone
August 20, 2026	Feature freeze
September 17, 2026	Kernel feature freeze
October 1, 2026	Kernel freeze
October 15, 2026	Ubuntu 26.10 final release
October 18, 2026	Linux 7.3 expected stable, or October 25 with another candidate

The gap between the last two rows is the part to read twice. The kernel freezes two weeks before the distribution ships, and upstream finishes three days after. If Linux 7.3 needs one more release candidate, that gap widens to ten days.

OMG Ubuntu reports that daily builds still run Linux 7.2 while support for the 7.3 candidates is enabled. The finished kernel reaches users through the normal updates after release.

Who gets it, and when

Ubuntu 26.10 is an interim release, supported for nine months rather than five years. Long-term support users are on a different track.

OMG Ubuntu reports that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS users can pick up this kernel through a hardware enablement update expected in early 2027. That is the usual route: an interim release does the testing, and the LTS inherits the result months later.

What this means for developers

Treat 26.10 as a hardware compatibility preview, not a production base. A pre-release kernel is fine on a laptop where you are testing new silicon. It is a poor choice for a build fleet that must behave identically all year.

Check the kernel your containers actually get. A container shares the host kernel, so a 26.10 base image on an older host does not give you 7.3, and a CI runner that upgrades to 26.10 does. If you maintain a kernel module or anything using eBPF, that difference decides whether your code loads.

Plan the module rebuild around October 1 rather than October 15. That is the kernel freeze, and it is the point after which the version you must build against stops moving. Waiting for the release date gives you two fewer weeks.

The wider pattern is worth noting if you package software for Ubuntu. This release is already changing the parts of the system nobody chooses directly, having moved cp, mv and rm to Rust coreutils. A newer kernel and rewritten core utilities in one interim release means more of the base system is new than the version number suggests.
