If your YouTube retention graph drops like a waterfall at the 30-second mark, you don't have an editing problem. You have a copywriting problem.
Enter The Curiosity Loop—the psychological framework behind high-retention tech channels like MKBHD and Cleo Abram.
Most creators dump their best insights upfront or hoard them until the end. Both destroy retention. The Curiosity Loop keeps viewers hooked by opening an intriguing question, delaying the payoff with valuable context, and closing it only after opening the next loop.
It creates a seamless chain reaction in the viewer's brain.
Here is how to structure it in a tech video:
1. Open the Loop
Drop a specific, high-stakes premise immediately.
Example: "This $50 mechanical keyboard feels better than a $300 custom board—but only if you make one risky modification."
2. Build Tension (Delay the Payoff)
Don't reveal the mod yet. Show why cheap stock keyboards usually sound terrible, compare the specs, and set up the build. You’re delivering real value while delaying the final reveal, raising the viewer's anticipation.
3. Close and Chain
Execute the mod and deliver the sound test payoff (Loop 1 Closed). But immediately hook them into the next problem before they click away.
Example: "Sounds insane, right? But this mod voids your warranty, and if you touch this specific internal cable, you'll instantly fry the PCB..." (Loop 2 Opened).
By chaining these micro-hooks throughout your video, you eliminate natural exit points. The moment a viewer gets an answer, they’re handed a fresh question.
Stop structuring your tech reviews like static spec sheets. Chain your insights together with Curiosity Loops and watch your average view duration skyrocket.
