Your viewer’s attention span isn’t short—their threshold for boredom is just ridiculously low. If your YouTube retention graph drops off a cliff after the intro, you’re likely giving away the prize too fast.
To fix your watch time, you need to master The Curiosity Loop.
It’s a psychological copywriting framework built on the "information gap"—the deep discomfort human brains feel when a compelling question is left unanswered. Instead of delivering information linearly, you structure your video as a chain of unresolved payoffs.
Here’s the three-step mechanics:
- Open the Loop: Tease a high-stakes question, contradiction, or unexpected test result.
- Delay the Payoff: Provide context, perform the benchmark, or build the PC—delivering micro-value while keeping the primary answer just out of reach.
- Close & Re-Open: Answer the original question, but immediately throw out a new teaser before the viewer can click away.
Let’s look at a tech video example:
- Boring, linear approach: "Today we’re testing if the $200 mini PC can run Cyberpunk 2077."
- Curiosity Loop approach: "This $200 mini PC shouldn't even boot Cyberpunk 2077. But after tweaking one hidden BIOS setting, we got playable framerates—with one dangerous catch."
You’ve opened a loop about the performance, introduced a second loop about the "hidden BIOS setting," and planted a third about the "dangerous
catch."
Once you finally reveal the BIOS setting at minute five, you instantly open the next loop: "Now that it boots, let’s see if the power supply melts under load."
Never let a video breathe. The moment you satisfy curiosity, create more. Chain your loops from intro to end screen, and you'll turn casual scrollers into long-session viewers.
