Outdoor gear and the concentration of manufacturing in Asia
The outdoor sector β tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, technical clothing β has a structural peculiarity: most of its manufacturing is concentrated in Asia, even for first-tier brands with strong Scandinavian or American identity.
The reason is historical and economic. In the 1990s, the outdoor industry moved technical textile and polyester production to Asian countries where labour costs were a fraction of European ones. Today, brands like Patagonia (US, 7.85) manufacture in Vietnam (3.08 β blocked) and Sri Lanka (6.44 β marginal). The North Face (US) manufactures in Bangladesh (5.99 β blocked) and Vietnam.
But there are relevant exceptions. Some Nordic brands β especially Hilleberg (Sweden) β maintain European manufacturing. And Australian brands like Sea to Summit have more transparent and verifiable supply chains.
Outdoor gear components and their democratic origin
Technical fabrics: fabrics for tents and outdoor clothing are primarily nylon and technical polyester. Democratic reference manufacturers are Pertex (UK, 8.28), Polartec (US, 7.85) and Toray (Japan, 8.40). Cordage nylon is manufactured by DuPont (US) for the premium segment.
Aluminium poles: aeronautical aluminium tent poles are manufactured by Easton (US, 7.85) β the world reference in tent poles β or DAC (Dong Ah Aluminium, South Korea, 8.09). Low-cost fiberglass poles are Chinese.
Down: sleeping bag down can be European or Asian. High-fill goose or duck down (900+ fill power) comes mainly from Hungary (7.21), Poland (7.14) and France (7.99) for the premium segment. Chinese down exists but with less traceability on animal welfare and quality.
Zippers: YKK (Japan, 8.40) is the premium brand standard. Low-cost bags and tents use Chinese-origin or generic zippers.
Synthetic insulation materials: Primaloft (US, 7.85) is the reference synthetic fill. Manufactures in the US with American post-consumer recycled materials. Low-cost synthetic insulation is Chinese with lower efficiency per gram.

Why the Hilleberg tent is a democratic investment
A Hilleberg Nammatj 3 tent (3 persons, 4-season) costs β¬1,800. That's a lot. But it is manufactured in Europe by Scandinavian craftspeople with permanent contracts, with verifiable-origin materials, and has a lifespan of 20β30 years if well cared for.
A Chinese-brand 3-person tent costs β¬80β150 on Amazon. It has a lifespan of 3β5 seasons before seams fail, poles bend or the waterproof coating deteriorates.
The annual cost of the Hilleberg (β¬60β90/year over 20 years) is comparable to buying a new tent every 3β4 years.
