Let Guests Use Telegram Groups Without Adding a Bot

The friction of inviting someone new

Bringing an outside voice into a Telegram group usually means running a gauntlet. You find an admin, open the member list, search for your bot, grant a slot, and hope nobody objects to one more tool in a chat already half-full of bots. For a guest who just wants to ask one question, that ceremony is where they quietly give up.

Telegram has built several paths that let an outsider participate, or a member tap real functionality, without any install ceremony. Two need no bot membership at all, and a third gives guests a mask when they would rather not post under their own name. They overlap more than people expect, so it helps to know all three.

Guest Mode, no bot install required

Guest Mode is the newest of the three. Added to the Telegram Bot API in version 10.0 in May 2026, it lets any member of a group @-mention a bot the group has never added, and the bot answers in a single reply visible to everyone. No admin approval and no membership slot are involved, which is exactly why it is such a low-friction entry point.

You use it by typing the bot's @username and your request as a normal message. With SplitTabsBot, you type @SplitTabsBot 120 pizza @anna @ben and send it like any other message. The bot works out the per-person math and posts the computed split as its one reply, readable by the whole group. Telegram sends that bot a single one-off update for the @-mention, it gets one reply, and the conversation moves on. Nothing is installed, and nothing persists if nobody tags the bot again.

A few honest limits are worth knowing. The bot sees only the message that @-mentioned it, not the group's earlier history or member list. It answers once per @-mention and cannot follow up on its own. If several people tag different bot-eligible icons in one message, up to three can each post a reply. And Guest Chat Mode is a setting the bot's owner has to enable, so a silent bot may simply not have the switch flipped yet. The full walkthrough lives in the guide on using a Telegram bot in a group without adding it.

Inline bots, the older zero-install path

Inline mode is the older sibling, and it works in more places. Type @botusername followed by a query anywhere in the message box, in a DM, a channel, or a group no bot could ever join, and the bot returns a result card above your keyboard before you have sent anything. You review the card, tap it to send, and the message lands marked "via @botusername".

Inline mode differs from Guest Mode in one important way. Guest Mode fires after you send an @-mention as a message. Inline fires while you are still typing, so you inspect the result before committing it. It also has to be turned on separately by the bot's owner in BotFather, so a bot can run inline, Guest Mode, both, or neither. And because the destination chat is unknown until you send, an inline card only offers to open a private chat with the bot, with no add-to-group option.

The best intro to reaching bots from any chat is the guide on Telegram inline bots, and the live bots that power the example above also run as inline bots.

Anonymous posting as the friction-free fallback

Sometimes the obstacle to a guest speaking up is not the bot install, it is being seen. For shy questions, awkward logistics, or frank feedback nobody wants tied to their account, anonymity is the fallback. A bot like AnonSayProBot lets anyone in a group post a message that appears as "Anonymous" instead of under their own name.

The mechanics are straightforward. The bot needs admin rights with delete permission so it can remove your original message. You type /anon followed by your text, your message is deleted, and it reposts under the group's anonymous prefix. Nobody opts in ahead of time, and any member can use /anon whenever they want. A DM path works too, where you message the bot, run /start, pick your group, and your next text posts anonymously without typing /anon again. Admins keep a safety valve: replying to an anonymous post with /reveal DMs them a hashed sender id, and /ban silently blocks that sender. The setup is covered in the guide to posting anonymously in a Telegram group.

When each approach fits

Reach for Guest Mode when you are already in a group, want a reply posted visibly, and do not want a permanent bot sitting there. Reach for inline mode when the chat could never host a bot, or when you want to inspect a result card before sending. Reach for anonymous posting when the point is the message rather than who sent it. The three overlap comfortably, and most teams end up using all of them.

Try the patterns on a live bot

The clearest way to make this real is to test the flows on working bots instead of reading about them. The two zero-install guides above walk through SplitTabsBot, WhisperLockBot, and IcebreakerDailyBot step by step. The anonymous guide does the same for AnonSayProBot. One example for a minute beats ten pages of theory.

Where to go from here

Pick one scenario you actually face, a guest needing a quick calculation or a shy member with a tough question, and run its walkthrough once. Once you see the reply land without any install ceremony, the instinct to protect your group from another bot fades. The full library of guides lives at tg.zovo.one/guides.
