Astrology websites look simple from the outside: enter a birth date, time, and location, then generate a chart.
But when I started working on an astrology chart tool, I realized there are several interesting technical challenges behind the experience.
1. Birth time matters more than I expected
A natal chart is not calculated from the birth date alone.
You normally need:
- Date of birth
- Exact birth time
- Birth location
- Latitude and longitude
- Time zone at the time of birth
Even a relatively small change in birth time can affect the Ascendant and house positions.
That means the input form is actually one of the most important parts of the product.
2. Location data needs to be converted
Users usually enter something like:
New York, USA
But the chart calculation needs geographic coordinates.
So the application needs to convert a city into latitude and longitude before calculating planetary and house positions.
There is also another issue: historical time zones and daylight saving time.
Using the user's current time zone isn't always enough when calculating a chart for someone born decades ago.
3. The chart itself is only part of the product
At first, I thought users mainly wanted the visual wheel.
In practice, the chart becomes much more useful when the application explains things like:
- Sun, Moon, and Rising signs
- Planet placements
- Astrological houses
- Aspects between planets
- Element and modality distribution
Instead of presenting a huge amount of information at once, I'm experimenting with breaking the interpretation into smaller sections.
4. Good visualization matters
Astrology charts contain a surprising amount of information.
You have:
- 12 zodiac signs
- 12 houses
- multiple planets
- angles
- aspect lines
Putting everything into one SVG or canvas without making it visually overwhelming is a UI challenge by itself.
My current approach is to keep the chart relatively clean and move detailed explanations into separate sections.
5. I turned it into a web tool
I eventually built these ideas into AstroChart, an online astrology chart tool where users can generate and explore their birth chart directly in the browser.
I'm continuing to expand it with additional astrology calculators and interpretation tools.
Building it has been an interesting combination of astronomy calculations, data handling, UI design, and content generation.
If you're building something similar, I'd be interested to hear how you approached chart rendering, ephemeris data, or astrology-related calculations.
