Verdict: the AI jobs boom in India is real and quantified — AI engineering roles are growing 51% year-on-year on LinkedIn platform data, the strongest hiring is in AI engineering, data-centre, healthcare and robotics work, and Dan Shapero's entry advice for a 22-year-old is to attach yourself to the most talented people in your discipline and get genuinely fluent with AI tools. Asked in a conversation published on 13 September 2026 what he would do if he were 22 in India today, that two-line answer was his reply (interview writeup). Tamil Nadu's planned AI City near Chennai alone counts about 2,920 announced jobs (Business Standard).
AI engineering jobs in India are growing 51% year-on-year, according to LinkedIn's own platform data as described by chief executive Dan Shapero during his first India visit in the role (Economic Times, NDTV Profit). Alongside that figure he named the sectors doing the hiring in India — healthcare, education, startups and robotics, plus data-centre operations, where hiring has tripled over the past decade (Economic Times).
TL;DR
- AI engineering roles in India are growing 51% annually on LinkedIn data, and data-centre hiring has tripled in ten years (ET).
- India is LinkedIn's second-largest market with 186 million members, out of more than 1.3 billion professionals globally (interview writeup).
- Around 12% of the skills listed on job postings in India change every year, concentrated in finance, marketing, sales and legal (NDTV Profit).
- India's share of overseas R&D hiring by US companies rose from 27% in 2019 to 41% in 2025 (ET).
- Shapero attributes the global hiring slowdown more to higher interest rates than to AI displacement (NDTV Profit).

What did LinkedIn's CEO actually say about AI jobs in India?
Dan Shapero became LinkedIn's chief executive in April 2026 after roughly 18 years at the company, most recently as chief operating officer (interview writeup). His India comments rest on hiring and profile data from the platform rather than survey opinion - posted demand, not filled seats.
The headline claim is the 51% annual growth rate in AI engineering roles, reported from Shapero's Economic Times interview during his first India visit as CEO (NDTV Profit). Around it sit three quieter numbers that matter more for planning a career. Data-centre-related hiring has tripled over the past decade. Skills demanded in Indian job postings turn over at about 12% a year. And India's slice of US companies' overseas R&D hiring climbed from 27% in 2019 to 41% in 2025, all per the same interview (NDTV Profit). Read together, they describe a market where the work is moving to India and the definition of the work keeps shifting underneath it.
He was also careful about the layoff narrative. On LinkedIn's data, the global hiring slowdown tracks interest rates more closely than it tracks AI adoption (NDTV Profit). That is consistent with what Indian IT services have been reporting, where capacity is being redeployed rather than cut. Wipro's own framing of AI freeing up work for 20,000 employees without layoffs is a useful example of the pattern (per CTO Sandhya Arun to Reuters via India Today), covered in our look at Wipro's zero-layoff redeployment, and the broader tension is unpacked in the AI layoffs paradox.
Which roles are growing, and which are fading
Growing, in his account: AI engineering, forward-deployed engineering roles that sit with customers rather than behind a backlog, healthcare, education, startups and robotics. Data-centre operations is the least glamorous entry on that list and arguably the most durable, since the buildout is physical. Tamil Nadu's Chennai AI city plan, with 2,920 announced jobs across four signed MoUs, is the concrete version of that trend (Business Standard), described in our Tamil Nadu AI city breakdown.
Fading is phrased less as whole occupations and more as method. His formulation is that every job done the old way is at risk. In finance, marketing, sales and legal, roughly 12% of the skills listed on postings disappear each year and are replaced by others (NDTV Profit). A financial analyst role in 2026 is still a financial analyst role; the tool list attached to it is not the one from 2023.
Two more platform signals point the same way. Founders on LinkedIn more than doubled, up 104% year-on-year, and small-business hiring on the platform is up more than 250% over the past few years (NDTV Profit). The hiring is dispersing away from a handful of large employers, which changes how you should search. Consolidation still happens at the top, as with the Happiest Minds and ITC Infotech merger, but it is no longer the whole story.
How would he start a career at 22 in India
His two-part answer is unusually specific for a CEO interview.
- Optimise for people, not logos. He describes his own formative learning as named after individuals rather than companies. Practically, that means choosing the team with the strongest practitioner over the better-known employer when the two conflict (interview writeup).
- Get properly comfortable with AI tools. He says people fluent with them pull ahead, and those who avoid them out of fear risk falling behind. He also names the interview question he values — "How do you use AI personally or professionally?" — and says an answer of "I don't" would concern him.
Three supporting points from the same interview: first, the common early-career mistake is demanding a perfect first answer - better to pick a plausible role, learn whether it fits, and switch while options are still wide. Second, transferable skills beat industry labels, because working with people, owning customer relationships and using AI tools all carry across sectors. Third, on credentials, he recruited at the IIMs and treats college as one brand signal among several. Work product - an app you built, a robotics project - counts, as does someone credible vouching for you. Because AI makes embellishment cheap, LinkedIn is investing in verification, and a personal relationship with someone who knows your actual work carries the most weight.
For mid-career professionals, roughly 40 and up, the advice is the same shape with different framing: find someone genuinely fluent in AI, learn directly from them, then practise.
What LinkedIn is shipping into this market
The company is not a neutral observer here. Its agentic recruiting products, including Hiring Assistant, launched less than 12 months ago and have crossed a $450 million annual revenue run rate, with Hiring Assistant in use in India (NDTV Profit). Roughly 40% of LinkedIn's revenue comes from helping companies with talent needs and about 40% from helping companies grow, with Premium serving individuals and smaller businesses.
Automated screening on the employer side raises the value of the signals it cannot easily fake: verified work, a referral from someone who has seen your output, a portfolio outside a CV. The same dynamic is playing out in advertising, as in OpenAI's India ads push.
Limitations worth stating
The 51% figure is platform data, self-reported by employers and members, with no independent audit alongside it. It measures posted role growth, not net employment or salaries, and a fast-growing base can still be small. LinkedIn has a commercial interest in a busy AI hiring narrative - treat the direction as well supported and the magnitude as a vendor estimate.
Method note
Our own keyword pricing run shows how thin the winnable ground is. We priced 656 keywords in the AI and developer-tooling space using DataForSEO volume and difficulty data, and only 72 (11.0%) cleared a winnable bar of 150 to 6,000 monthly searches, difficulty 20 or below, a genuine technical term, and at least three words (n=656, measured 14 September 2026, via DataForSEO). Separately, ai jobs in india measured 1,900 monthly searches at difficulty 0 for India on the same date, via the same DataForSEO pricing run.
FAQ
Q: How fast are AI jobs in India actually growing?
A: LinkedIn reports AI engineering roles in India growing 51% year-on-year, with data-centre-related hiring tripling over the past decade (NDTV Profit). Both figures come from platform hiring data rather than an independent labour survey.
Q: Which sectors in India are hiring for AI roles?
A: Healthcare, education, startups and robotics were named as growth areas, alongside data-centre operations and forward-deployed engineering roles that work directly with customers (NDTV Profit).

Q: Do I need an IIM or IIT degree for an AI job in India?
A: No. College is treated as one brand signal among several. Demonstrable work product such as a shipped app or robotics project, plus a referral from someone who has seen your work, carries comparable or greater weight (interview writeup).
