> **Quick Answer:** If your engine seizes while driving, you will hear a loud knock or grinding, feel the engine lock up, and lose all power. Get off the road immediately, turn on your hazards, and call for a tow. Do not try to restart the engine. A seized engine cannot be driven, and any attempt to force it will make an already expensive repair catastrophically worse.
## What Just Happened to My Engine?
A seized engine means the internal moving parts, typically the pistons, connecting rods, or crankshaft, have stopped rotating and locked up solid. It usually happens because the engine ran out of oil, overheated severely, or suffered a catastrophic internal failure like a spun bearing or broken rod. The engine did not stall. It physically cannot rotate. If you heard a deep knock or bang followed by sudden power loss, that is likely what happened.
Check your oil pressure warning light and temperature gauge. If the oil light was on for any length of time before this, oil starvation is the probable cause. If the temp gauge was buried in the red, heat-induced seizure is on the table. Either way, the diagnosis does not change what you do next.
## What Do I Do Right Now on the Side of the Road?
Put it in neutral if you haven't already, coast to the shoulder, and stop the car completely. Turn on your hazard lights immediately. If you are on a highway, get as far off the travel lane as possible and exit through the passenger side door if the driver's side puts you near traffic. Set out emergency triangles or flares if you have them behind the car to warn oncoming drivers.
Do not try to restart the engine. Cranking a seized engine can snap the starter motor, strip the ring gear on the flywheel, or, in the worst case, blow out a freeze plug or cause a rod to punch through the block. You will turn a repair into a total loss.
Call for a tow. This car is not going anywhere under its own power, and nothing about that is going to change on the side of the road. If you broke down on a busy interstate, [a breakdown on a high-speed road at night](/broken-down-on-highway-at-night-safety-tips-what-to-do/) carries real danger. Stay behind the guardrail if one is present, not next to the car.
## How Much Is This Tow Going to Cost Me?
A local tow, under 10 miles, typically runs $75 to $150. Hook-up fees alone average $50 to $75 before a single mile is charged. Per-mile rates generally run $3 to $7 after the base fee. If you are far from a shop and need a long-distance tow, [a 100-mile interstate tow](/how-much-to-tow-car-100-miles-interstate/) will cost $250 to $500 or more depending on your location and the time of day.
If you have roadside assistance through your insurance, this tow may be covered partially or in full. Check your policy app right now while you wait. USAA, GEICO, and State Farm all offer roadside towing add-ons that can cut your out-of-pocket cost to zero or close to it.
## Can a Seized Engine Be Fixed, or Is the Car Totaled?
It depends on what seized and why. A hydrolocked engine, caused by water getting into the cylinders, can sometimes be saved if it is caught before any bending or cracking occurs. A seizure from oil starvation that spun a bearing and scored the cylinder walls alm

ost always requires a full engine rebuild or replacement. Expect $3,000 to $7,000 or more for a replacement engine with labor, depending on your make and model.
Get the car to a shop before writing it off. A mechanic needs to pull the oil pan and inspect the bearings, check for crankshaft damage, and assess whether the block is salvageable. If the car has high mileage and the repair approaches the car's value, the math may point toward a replacement vehicle instead. That is a conversation to have with your mechanic after a proper diagnosis, not on the shoulder of the road.
If you were already seeing symptoms like a [flashing check engine light and shaking](/check-engine-light-flashing-car-shaking-pull-over-now/) before this happened, mention that to the shop. It helps them trace the failure sequence.
## Will My Insurance Cover Any of This?
The tow itself may be covered if you have roadside assistance on your policy. The engine repair is a different story. Standard auto insurance, liability or collision, does not cover mechanical failure. Comprehensive coverage does not either. If the seizure was caused by an accident, collision coverage might apply to the tow, but not the engine repair itself.
If you are financing or leasing the car, check whether you purchased a mechanical breakdown policy or extended warranty separately. Those sometimes cover catastrophic engine failures. Read the policy exclusions carefully, because many exclude damage caused by lack of maintenance, which covers oil-related seizures.

## Common Questions
**Q: Can I drive a seized engine even a short distance?**
A: No. A seized engine cannot rotate, so the car will not move. Attempting to force it will cause additional damage, potentially destroying the block entirely and eliminating any chance of a cheaper repair.
**Q: How do I know for sure my engine is seized and not just stalled?**
A: Try to turn the engine over by hand using a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt at the front of the engine. If it will not rotate at all, it is seized. A stalled engine will crank freely with the starter but just not fire.
**Q: What caused my engine to seize while I was driving?**
A: The most common causes are oil starvation from low oil or a failed oil pump, severe overheating that warped or welded internal components, and catastrophic bearing failure. A broken timing belt or chain can also cause valve-to-piston contact that locks the engine.
**Q: Should I have the car towed to a dealership or an independent shop?**
A: An independent shop that specializes in engine work will almost always cost less for the repair. A dealership can source OEM parts faster for newer vehicles but will charge more for labor. Get estimates from both before authorizing any work.
**Q: Is a seized engine always the end for the car?**
A: Not always. If the block is not cracked and the crankshaft is not damaged, a rebuild or crate engine swap can bring the car back. The decision comes down to repair cost versus vehicle value. Have the shop inspect it first before making a call.
