Car Battery Died in Parking Garage: Towing Options and What to Do First: Quick Guide

Your battery is dead and you're stuck in a parking garage. The exits are tight, the ceiling is low, and you're not sure who can even get to you. Here's exactly what to do.

> **Quick Answer:** Try a jump start first. Most garages can be reached by a standard roadside service vehicle if you're on a lower level, and a jump start costs far less than a tow. If the battery won't hold a charge or the car won't start after jumping, you'll need a flatbed or wheel-lift tow out. Expect to pay $75 to $150 for that service, more if the garage has clearance or access restrictions.

## Can Someone Actually Tow My Car Out of a Parking Garage?

Yes, but the method depends on the garage. Standard tow trucks, especially flatbeds, often can't fit inside multi-story garages with low clearance (most are 7 to 8 feet). Wheel-lift trucks are shorter and more maneuverable, which makes them the better fit for tight structures. Before you call just any tow company, tell the dispatcher your garage's clearance height and whether it's a flat lot, a spiral ramp structure, or a stacked automated garage. That one detail determines who can help you.

If you're in a ground-level parking structure or an open surface lot, access is usually not an issue and any tow truck can reach you.

## What Should I Try Before Calling a Tow Truck?

Jump-start the car first. A dead battery in a garage is rarely a reason to tow if the battery just discharged from leaving a light on or sitting too long. Call your roadside assistance service (AAA, your insurance's roadside add-on, or a pay-per-use service) and request a jump start specifically. Most services dispatch a light-duty vehicle for jump starts that can fit in tighter spaces than a full tow truck.

If you don't have jumper cables or a jump box, check the garage itself. Many attached garages in shopping centers or airports have a security or facilities team that carries portable jump starters. Ask at the nearest attendant booth or call the number posted at the exit kiosk.

One specific thing to know: if your car's battery is a late-model AGM (absorbed glass mat) type, common in BMWs, Audis, and many newer domestic vehicles, you need a jump source that matches the amperage. A weak jump box that works fine for an old lead-acid battery may not spin over an AGM battery on a cold engine. Tell the service tech what kind of battery you have if you know it. ## What Does It Cost to Tow a Car Out of a Parking Garage?

A local tow in most U.S. cities runs $75 to $150 for the hook-up fee plus the first few miles. Parking garages can push that cost higher for a few reasons:

- **Restricted access surcharge:** Some tow companies charge an extra $25 to $50 if they need to send a smaller wheel-lift truck instead of their standard flatbed.
- **Wait time:** If a garage attendant needs to unlock a level or an elevator, some companies bill a waiting fee after 15 minutes, typically $1 to $2 per minute.
- **Mileage to the shop:** The base rate covers the hook-up and a short distance. Every mile beyond that runs $3 to $7 depending on your city.

ce, call them first. Many policies cover a jump start at no cost and a tow up to a set dollar amount. Check your policy before paying out of pocket. If you're a USAA member, see [USAA Towing Coverage: How Much Does It Pay?](/usaa-towing-coverage-how-much-does-it-pay/) for specifics on what they actually reimburse.

## What If the Battery Won't Hold a Charge After a Jump?

If the car starts after a jump and then dies again within a few minutes or before you can exit the garage, the battery is not holding a charge. That points to one of two things: the battery itself is done (typically after 3 to 5 years of service), or the alternator is not charging it while the engine runs. You can't tell which one from inside the garage without a load tester.

At that point, you do need a tow to a shop. Do not try to drive out and hope the car makes it home. A car running on a dead battery with a failed alternator can lose power to the electric power steering, brake assist, and dashboard warnings with no additional warning. For more detail on that specific scenario, read [Alternator Died While Driving: Signs and Towing Options](/alternator-died-while-driving-signs-and-towing-options/).

Before the tow truck arrives, check whether the garage has a minimum clearance posted at each entry point. Take a photo and text it to the tow dispatcher. That single step prevents the truck from arriving and being unable to access your level, which wastes your time and may trigger a trip fee even if no tow happens.

## Common Questions

**Q: Will a standard AAA truck fit inside a parking garage?**
A: Not always. Standard flatbeds often can't get past a 7-foot clearance. Call AAA and give them the garage height. They'll dispatch a wheel-lift or smaller service van if needed, and most AAA regions have those vehicles available.

**Q: Can I push my car to the exit so the tow truck can reach it?**
A: Yes, if you have help and the slope works in your favor. Put the car in neutral, release the parking brake, and have someone steer while others push. Make sure the path is clear and you have enough people to stop it safely. Don't attempt this on a steep spiral ramp alone.

**Q: Is a dead battery in a parking garage covered by roadside assistance?**
A: A jump start almost always is. Towing depends on your plan. Most roadside add-ons through insurance cover a tow to the nearest shop, but check your mileage limit. Some plans cap at 5 miles, others at 25.

**Q: How long does it take for roadside assistance to reach me inside a garage?**
A: Average wait times run 30 to 60 minutes in most metro areas. Garages in dense downtown areas can add time if the driver has trouble finding the correct entrance or level. Text your exact level and nearest stairwell number to the dispatcher after you call.

**Q: What if the parking garage won't let the tow truck in without a ticket or payment?**
A: Pay the garage exit fee yourself before the tow truck arrives if possible. Some garages will waive or reduce the fee for a breakdown situation if you speak to an attendant directly. Either way, don't wait for the tow company to negotiate that on your behalf as it will cost you time.
