Here's a story that crossed our desk this week. Someone arranging car shipping wanted to confirm the car they were buying had actually been assembled in Japan. An AI assistant looked at the VIN, saw it started with J, and said: built in Japan.
That's correct — the first character of every VIN encodes the country that built the car, and J belongs exclusively to Japan.
Then the same assistant confidently named the model. Wrong model. Also instructive: the model isn't sitting in any character you can eyeball. A VIN is a tightly structured 17-character record where some fields are readable at a glance and some genuinely require a lookup table the size of a phone book.
The three zones of a VIN
Every vehicle sold since 1981 carries a 17-character VIN, and it splits into three zones:
- Characters 1–3 — the World Manufacturer Identifier. Character 1 is the build country: J = Japan, K = South Korea, W = Germany, S = the UK, Z = Italy, 1/4/5 = the United States, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico. Characters 2–3 identify the manufacturer and vehicle type.
- Characters 4–8 — the Vehicle Descriptor Section: model, body style, engine, restraint system, encoded in each manufacturer's own scheme. This is exactly why you can't eyeball a model out of a VIN.
- Characters 9–17 — check digit (9), model year (10), assembly plant (11), sequential serial number (12–17).
The Honda case makes the country zone vivid: a US-market Accord built in Marysville, Ohio starts 1HG; the same generation Accord built in Sayama, Japan starts JHM. Same badge, same showroom, one character apart. If you're paying to ship a car across an ocean because you specifically want the Japan-built one, that first character is doing real work.
And three letters never appear anywhere in a VIN — I, O, and Q — banned because they read as 1 and 0.
The check digit: a typo detector from 1981
Character 9 is our favorite. It's a check digit, computed from all the other characters: every character maps to a number, each position carries a weight, and the weighted sum mod 11 must equal position 9 (with X standing in for ten). Transpose two characters typing a VIN into a form and the math stops working — a 1981 regulation quietly doing the job of a modern checksum.
Character 10 is the model year, and it cycles: letters (skipping the banned ones, plus U and Z) through 2000, then digits 1–9, then back to letters — A meant 1980 and it meant 2010 again. Character 11 is the assembly plant, another single readable character.
So a practiced eye gets country, year, and plant from three characters. Everything else — trim, engine, drivetrain, airbag configuration — lives in the manufacturer-specific middle, which is lookup-table territory.
When eyeballing runs out, decode — and then keep going

VIN decode returns the full structured record — make, model, year, trim, engine, transmission, and the assembly plant spelled out. And because the decode is chained server-side, every other endpoint in the pack takes a bare VIN too:
- open safety recalls (with do-not-drive flags)
- 5-star crash-test ratings
- owner-filed defect complaints
- official fuel economy
- and our favorite: a top-failure-components report that aggregates every complaint on file into a ranked list of what actually breaks on that exact year, make, and model
The shipping-question version of that workflow: paste the VIN, confirm the J and the model in one call, then ask the failure report whether the car you're about to put on a boat has a transmission with a reputation. The 2003 Accord in our launch demo has 2,013 complaints on file and 46% of them name the power train — the kind of thing you'd rather learn before the ocean crossing than after.
