How Foreigners Get a Real Chinese Name in 2026
You land in China. You're excited. You learn "ni hao" and "xie xie." And then someone asks: "Do you have a Chinese name?"
You don't. So they give you one. Usually something that sounds like your English name.
"Mike" becomes "Maike"
"Sarah" becomes "Shala" (literally "salad" in Chinese)
I once met a girl named "Kele" because her English name was "Cola." She didn't know that means "Coca-Cola" in Chinese.
The Three Ways Foreigners Get Chinese Names
1. The Random Name (Most Common)
A friend, coworker, or barista gives you a name on the spot. They pick characters that sound nice or are easy to pronounce.
Problem: It means nothing. It's a costume, not a name.
2. The Translation App
You type your name into Baidu or Google Translate. It gives you the closest phonetic match.
Problem: Same issue. Phonetics don't equal meaning. And sometimes the characters have weird connotations.
3. The Bazi Name (The Real Way)
This is how Chinese families name their babies. A master analyzes your birth chart (bazi) - the exact year, month, day, and hour you were born. From this, they determine:
- Which of the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth) dominate your chart
- Which element you're missing
- What kind of characters will balance your energy
Then they choose a name where every character carries the right elemental weight.
Result: A name that isn't just a label - it's a reflection of who you are.
Why Bazi Naming Is Different
Think of it this way:
A random name is like buying a shirt at a tourist shop. It fits, but it's not yours.
A bazi name is like having a tailor measure you and make something from scratch. It fits because it was made for you.
The Chinese believe that your name affects your energy, your luck, and your relationships. A name that aligns with your birth chart doesn't just sound good - it feels right.
My Experience
I got my bazi name through ChinaPal. I entered my birthday, and within two minutes it told me:
- I have too much fire in my chart
- I need water to balance
- My ideal characters should carry the water element
My name: Ze Yu.
- Ze = marsh, grace (water element)
- Yu = universe, spaciousness
When people in China call me "Ze Yu," I feel like they're calling me by a name that actually belongs to me. Not a tourist-shop label.
How to Get Yours
ChinaPal offers a bazi name reading for $9.99 (one-time). You enter your birthday, get your five elements analysis, and receive a Chinese name with full English breakdown.
It's the difference between having a name and having your name.
