TL;DR
- On a UK CV, "references available on request" is filler every employer already assumes, so delete it and reclaim the line.
- Modern convention: you usually do not list references at all, you provide them when asked, almost always after an offer.
- When you are asked, give two referees, lead with a recent manager, and never use family.
When I was building CVPilot, I read through thousands of real CVs to tune our scoring, and one line showed up on nearly every single one: "references available on request". It is the CV equivalent of a commented-out block everyone copies forward but nobody questions. Here is why it should go, and what to do with references instead.
You have polished every bullet point, tightened your personal statement, and picked the perfect font. Then you reach the bottom of the page and type the three words almost every template still suggests: "references available on request". Stop right there.
That single line is one of the most persistent habits in British CV writing, and it is quietly working against you. In this guide I will show you how references actually fit into a modern UK job search, when to list them, when to leave them off entirely, and how to handle the whole reference process without tripping over the etiquette.
Should You Put References on a CV at All?
For most UK applications, the honest answer is no, you do not include references on your CV. The modern convention is to provide them when the employer asks, which is usually much later in the process.
Your CV has one job: to earn you an interview. Every line should be selling your skills, your achievements, and your fit for the role. Contact details for two former managers do none of that work, so they simply take up space that a stronger bullet point could use.
There is also a practical privacy reason. Your referees have not agreed to be contacted by every company you apply to, and listing their phone numbers on a document you send to dozens of employers is a quick way to annoy the very people whose goodwill you need.
Key Takeaway: On a standard UK CV, leave references off completely and keep that space for content that actually helps you land the interview.
The "Available on Request" Myth
Here is the contrarian bit that most people get wrong. Writing "references available on request" is not harmless filler. It actively wastes a line of prime CV space to state something every single employer already assumes.
No recruiter has ever reached the end of a CV, found no reference line, and concluded that the candidate is refusing to provide any. Of course they are available on request. That is how references have always worked. The phrase carries zero new information.
Think about what that line costs you. On a tightly formatted one or two page CV, a wasted line can push a genuine achievement onto a second page or force you to shrink your font. Deleting "references available on request" is one of the rare free upgrades in CV writing, so treat it as a quick win and reclaim the room.
Key Takeaway: "References available on request" tells the reader nothing they did not already assume, so removing it costs you nothing and gives you back valuable space.
When You Actually Do List References
There are genuine exceptions, and they matter. Some public sector, NHS, academic, and teaching applications explicitly ask for referees up front, often on the application form rather than the CV itself.
If the job advert or application portal specifically requests references, provide them. Follow the instruction exactly, because ignoring a stated requirement reads as carelessness before anyone has even assessed your experience.
Academic and research roles are the other common case. A university post may want two or three named referees, sometimes including your PhD supervisor or head of department, and the expectation there is different from a commercial job. When in doubt, do what the employer asks and no more.
Key Takeaway: List references only when the application specifically asks for them, which is common in public sector, NHS, teaching, and academic roles.
How Many References and Who to Choose
When you are asked, two references is the standard expectation in the UK. One should ideally be your current or most recent line manager, since that is the person an employer trusts most to speak to your recent performance.
Choosing the right people matters more than the number. A recent manager who can describe your actual work carries far more weight than a friend who likes you, and employers can tell the difference immediately.
Avoid a few common traps. Never list a family member, and be cautious about friends unless the role specifically invites a character reference. The table below sorts the strong choices from the weak ones.
| Referee | Good choice? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Current or recent line manager | Strong | Speaks directly to your recent performance and reliability |
| Previous manager or supervisor | Strong | Credible professional view of how you work |
| Senior colleague or team lead | Good | Useful when a manager is unavailable |
| Client or external partner | Good | Confirms results for freelancers and contractors |
| Tutor or lecturer | Good for graduates | Sensible when you have limited work history |
| Friend | Weak | Seen as biased unless a character reference is requested |
| Family member | Never | Treated as worthless and slightly desperate |
Key Takeaway: Line up two references, lead with a recent manager, and never fall back on family, however glowing they might be.
Professional Versus Character References
It helps to know the difference, because employers ask for different things. A professional reference confirms your job title, dates, and how you performed at work, and this is what most commercial employers want.
A character reference is a different animal. It speaks to your personality and reliability rather than your job performance, and it is more common for first jobs, volunteering, tenancy applications, or roles involving vulnerable people.
Match the reference to the request. If an employer asks for a professional reference, a neighbour who thinks you are lovely will not do. Read the wording carefully and supply exactly what they specify.
Key Takeaway: Professional references vouch for your work, character references vouch for you as a person, so give the employer the type they actually asked for.
When Reference Checks Happen in the UK
This is the part that reassures nervous candidates. In the UK, references are almost always taken up after a job offer, not before the interview. Offers are routinely made "subject to satisfactory references".
That timing changes everything. Nobody is ringing your current boss the moment you apply, so your job hunt stays confidential until you choose to accept an offer. You are usually asked for referee details only once you are the preferred candidate.
There is one more shift worth knowing. Many UK employers now provide only a basic factual reference, confirming your job title and the dates you worked there, and nothing more. Companies grew wary of defamation claims, so the glowing paragraph of old is increasingly rare.
Key Takeaway: UK reference checks typically come after an offer, and many employers now confirm only your dates and job title, so a factual reference is normal, not a red flag.
How to Ask Someone and Prep Them
Always ask before you name anyone. Catching a referee by surprise is unfair and often produces a lukewarm response that helps nobody.
Make the request easy to say yes to. Tell them the role, the company, and the two or three qualities you would love them to highlight, and forward the job description so they can tailor their comments. A well briefed referee gives a far sharper reference than one working from memory.
Keep them in the loop too. Let your referees know when a check is likely to land so a request does not sit ignored in a spam folder, and thank them afterwards regardless of the outcome. These are relationships you will want to use again.
Key Takeaway: Ask permission first, brief your referees on the role and the strengths to stress, and warn them a check is coming so nothing gets missed.
Handling a Bad or Unavailable Former Employer
What if a past manager left, or the relationship soured? First, do not panic. You are rarely obliged to use a specific person, so choose a different colleague who saw your work, such as a team lead or a senior peer from the same job.
If a company has closed or the manager has vanished, a factual reference from the HR department confirming your dates is usually enough. Employers understand that businesses fold and people move on.
Legally, you have some protection. A UK reference must be true, accurate, and fair, and an employer cannot lie about you or give a misleading impression. If you genuinely fear an unfair reference, a neutral factual one confirming dates and title is a reasonable thing to request. Key Takeaway: If a former employer is unavailable or hostile, switch to another credible colleague or fall back on a factual HR reference, which is legally required to be fair and accurate.
How to Format References If You Do List Them
On the rare occasion you are asked to include them, keep it clean and consistent. List each referee with their full name, job title, company, relationship to you, and a professional contact method. Tools like CVPilot keep this formatting tidy so it matches the rest of your document.
Give the reader the context they need in one glance. Here is a simple do and don't for the section.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Include name, title, company, and relationship | List a bare phone number with no context |
| Use professional email addresses | Share a personal mobile without permission |
| Confirm every detail is current | Reuse an old referee you have not spoken to in years |
| Only include them when asked | Add "references available on request" as filler |
Presentation still counts here. A well structured reference section signals the same care you brought to the rest of your application, so a quick check with CVPilot before you submit is time well spent.
Key Takeaway: When you must list references, give full context for each person, keep the details current, and only ever include the section when the employer has asked for it.
The Bottom Line
References matter, but not on your CV. Leave them off, delete the "available on request" line, and hold your two chosen referees in reserve until an employer asks. That keeps your CV focused and your referees respected.
Handle the rest with a bit of etiquette: ask permission, brief your people, and remember that checks usually come after the offer. Get that sequence right and references become a formality rather than a worry.
