Thinkific vs Teachable: Which Course Platform Wins?

Introduction

When it comes to launching online courses, Thinkific and Teachable are often the first names that come up. Both platforms have helped thousands of educators, trainers, and entrepreneurs build thriving course businesses. But they're not identical—and choosing the wrong one can cost you thousands in wasted investment and countless hours learning a clunky system.

The decision comes down to your specific needs, budget, and technical comfort level. Both platforms are solid, but they serve different types of creators. Let me walk you through the real differences so you can make an informed choice.

Pricing: Where Your Money Goes

Teachable offers four pricing tiers:

• Free (limited features, Teachable branding)
• Basic: $39/month
• Professional: $119/month
• Business: $249/month

All paid plans waive transaction fees if you process payments directly through Stripe.

Thinkific has five plans:

• Free (limited)
• Pro: $99/month
• Premier: $299/month
• Business: Custom pricing

On the surface, Teachable appears cheaper, but there's a catch: Teachable charges 5% transaction fees on the Free plan and 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on Basic. Thinkific includes payment processing with no transaction fees across all paid plans, which is a significant long-term advantage if you have meaningful revenue.

Real example: If you're selling $10,000 in courses monthly, Teachable's transaction fees alone could cost you $290/month ($3,480/year) on the Basic plan, while Thinkific charges a flat fee regardless.

Features and Functionality

Content Delivery and Course Building

Both platforms offer intuitive course builders with drag-and-drop interfaces. Teachable excels at simplicity—it's genuinely beginner-friendly if you've never built a course before. The interface is clean, and you can get your first lesson up in minutes.

Thinkific offers more granular control over course structure. You can set prerequisites, conditional content paths, and complex enrollment rules. If you're building sophisticated learning journeys—especially for corporate training—Thinkific's flexibility matters.

Integrations and Automation

This is where significant differences emerge:

Teachable integrates with Zapier, making it easier to connect to email platforms, CRM systems, and productivity tools. However, native integrations are more limited.

Thinkific offers deeper integration options, including native Mailchimp and Klaviyo connections, more robust API access, and better automation workflows. If you're running a sophisticated marketing operation, Thinkific plays nicer with your existing stack.

Community and Social Learning

Teachable has built-in community features with discussion boards and messaging. These are adequate but basic—think of them as "functional" rather than "engaging."

Thinkific's community tools are more robust. You get better moderation controls, the ability to create member profiles with avatars, and more sophisticated discussion threading. For creators building lasting communities, Thinkific wins here.

Certificates and Assessments

Both platforms offer quiz and assessment capabilities. Teachable provides straightforward quizzes with automatic grading. Thinkific goes further with progress tracking, conditional logic on quiz results, and certificate customization. Again, if you're doing corporate training where certificates matter, Thinkific has an edge.

User Experience and Ease of Use

Teachable is genuinely easier to learn. If you're a non-technical creator, you'll appreciate how quickly you can get started. The dashboard is uncluttered, and the onboarding is solid.

Thinkific has a slightly steeper learning curve, but it's not overwhelming. The tradeoff is worth it if you need advanced features. Once you're familiar with it, you'll appreciate the power it gives you.

A critical advantage for Teachable: their documentation and YouTube tutorials are more abundant in the wild. For Thinkific, you're more reliant on official resources, which are good but smaller.

Support, Resources, and Community

Customer Support

Teachable offers email support on all plans and live chat on higher tiers. Response times are typically 24–48 hours. The community forum is active, with Teachable staff often participating.

Thinkific provides similar email support but includes a knowledge base that's particularly well-organized. Their community is smaller but more specialized—you're more likely to find creators in your niche than on Teachable's.

Learning Resources

Both have webinars, knowledge bases, and certification programs for creators. Teachable's advantage is sheer volume of third-party tutorials. Thinkific's is the depth of official documentation, particularly around advanced features.

Comparison Table

Best Use Cases

Choose Teachable if:

• You're a first-time course creator and want to launch quickly
• Your courses are relatively simple (single subject, linear structure)
• You prioritize ease of use over advanced features
• Your student base is small to medium (under 1,000 students initially)

Choose Thinkific if:

• You're scaling to serious revenue and want to minimize transaction fees
• You need sophisticated automation and conditional learning paths
• You want to build a lasting community alongside your courses
• You're integrating with a robust marketing and CRM infrastructure
• You need advanced reporting and student data analysis

Final Verdict

There's no universal winner here—it depends on where you are in your course business journey.

For beginners and solopreneurs, Teachable is the safer choice. You'll get up and running faster, and the lower entry price ($39 vs $99) matters when you're testing ideas.

For scaling creators and corporate training programs, Thinkific's lack of transaction fees and advanced features justify the higher cost. Over a year, these advantages compound.
