Quick Fixes for Common GE Dishwasher Error Codes
When your GE dishwasher starts flashing cryptic numbers, you don’t have to call a service tech immediately. Most codes point to issues you can troubleshoot with a screwdriver, a bucket, and a bit of patience. Below are hands‑on steps that get the machine back to cleaning dishes without breaking the bank.
Diagnose the Flashing Lights
- Identify the code – Write down the four‑digit sequence (e.g., “F09E”) that appears on the display. The pattern tells you whether the problem is electrical, water‑related, or a sensor fault.
- Power‑cycle the unit – Turn off the dishwasher at the circuit breaker for 2 minutes, then restore power. Many intermittent errors clear after a hard reset.
- Check the door latch – A loose latch or misaligned strike plate can trigger “F01” or “F02” codes. Open the door, examine the latch for debris, and tighten the mounting screws if needed.
- Inspect water supply – Low pressure or a kinked inlet hose often causes “F03” errors. Disconnect the hose, verify that the house water valve is fully open, and run a brief flow test into a bucket.
- Examine the drain pump – A humming pump that won’t spin usually means a blockage. Remove the bottom rack, locate the pump cover (usually behind the lower spray arm), and clear any food fragments or broken glass.
If the code persists after these checks, move on to the next section.
Reset vs. Replace: When to Stop DIY
- Resetting the control board – Some codes, like “F05” (temperature sensor) or “F06” (over‑temperature), can be cleared by holding the “Start/Reset” button for 5 seconds after the power‑cycle. This forces the board to reload its firmware and often resolves false readings.
- Testing the sensor – Use a multimeter set to ohms. For a temperature sensor, you should see about 10 kΩ at room temperature; a wildly different reading indicates a bad sensor that needs swapping.
- Replacing the pump motor – If the pump still won’t turn after clearing debris, listen for a high‑pitched whine. That sound means the motor windings are burned out, and the pump assembly must be replaced.
- Control board failure – Persistent, non‑specific codes after all mechanical checks usually point to the electronic control board. Look for scorch marks or swollen capacitors. In most cases, a replacement board is the only cure.

Takeaway: Most GE dishwasher errors can be cleared with a systematic inspection of the latch, water supply, and drain pump before deciding whether a component truly needs replacement.
