How to Check Which Apps Are Sending Your Data Over the Internet on Windows

You open your browser. Everything seems normal.

But behind the scenes, dozens of applications might be quietly sending data over the internet — without you knowing.

Game launchers checking for updates. PDF readers pinging analytics servers. System services phoning home. Even some antivirus tools regularly send data to the cloud.

Most of this is legitimate. But some of it might not be.

The question is: How do you find out exactly which apps are using your internet connection?

This guide covers 6 practical ways to check which apps are sending your data over the internet on Windows — from built-in Windows tools to powerful third-party utilities.

Why You Should Care About App Network Activity

Understanding which apps use your internet connection matters for several reasons:

The good news? Windows provides several built-in tools to monitor this activity. And if you need more detail, there are excellent third-party options as well.

Method 1: Data Usage in Windows Settings

The simplest way to see which apps are using your internet is through Windows Settings.

How to check:

1. Press Win + I to open Settings
2. Go to Network & Internet → Data usage
3. Review the usage breakdown by app

What you'll see: A list of apps and the amount of data they've used over the selected period. The available breakdown and filtering options may vary depending on your Windows version and connection type.

Best for: A quick overview of which apps are consuming the most data over time.

Limitation: This shows historical usage, not real-time activity.

Method 2: Task Manager (Real-Time Monitoring)

For real-time network activity, Task Manager is your friend.

How to check:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2. Go to the Processes tab
3. Right-click any column header and select Network from the dropdown
4. Sort by Network usage to see the most active apps at the top

What you'll see: Which processes are actively using your internet connection right now, with the amount of data they're sending or receiving.

Best for: Seeing which apps are actively using your internet connection right now.

Limitation: Only shows current activity, not historical patterns.

Method 3: Resource Monitor (Detailed Process-Level View)

For granular, process-level visibility into network activity, Resource Monitor is one of the most useful built-in tools.

How to check:

1. Open the Start Menu and type Resource Monitor
2. Click "Resource Monitor" in the search results to launch it
3. Switch to the Network tab
4. In the Processes with Network Activity section, you'll see all processes using the network

What you can see:

• Image: The process name and path
• PID: Process ID
• Send (B/sec): Data being sent per second
• Receive (B/sec): Data being received per second
• Total (B/sec): Total bandwidth usage

You can also expand the TCP Connections section to see the remote IP addresses and ports each app is connecting to.

Best for: Deep investigation of which specific processes are using bandwidth and where they're connecting.

Limitation: Requires some technical knowledge to interpret the data.

Method 4: netstat Command (Advanced Users)

For users comfortable with the command line, netstat provides detailed information about all active network connections.

How to check:

1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell as Administrator
2. Run this command to see all established connections with Process IDs:

netstat -ano | findstr ESTABLISHED

What each flag does:

• -a: Shows all connections and listening ports
• -n: Displays addresses and ports in numerical form
• -o: Shows the owning process ID (PID)

To identify which app is using a specific connection:

1. Note the PID from the netstat output
2. Open Task Manager → Details tab
3. Find the process with that PID

For a more detailed view with process names:

netstat -b

(May require Administrator privileges depending on your system configuration)

Best for: Power users who want to see every single network connection in detail.

Limitation: Command-line interface isn't user-friendly for everyone.

Method 5: Portmaster — Application-Level Network Monitoring

If you want full visibility and control over every outbound connection, Portmaster is a strong free option.

Portmaster is a free, open-source application-layer firewall that shows every outbound connection an app makes and gives you the power to block it.

Key features:

Once installed, Portmaster runs in the background monitoring outbound traffic. You'll see exactly which apps are "phoning home" — often more than you'd expect.

Best for: Privacy-conscious users who want full control over app network access.

Limitation: Requires some initial setup and decision-making about which apps to allow or block.

Method 6: TCPView and GlassWire

TCPView (Microsoft Sysinternals)

TCPView is a free tool from Microsoft's Sysinternals suite that provides a graphical representation of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system.

How it works:

• Lists all active TCP and UDP endpoints
• Shows local and remote addresses
• Displays connection states
• Reports the owning process name
• Updates in real-time (default: every second)
• Color-coded: new endpoints in green, closed in red

You can even close established connections directly from the interface.

Note: Closing a connection does not necessarily stop the application from reconnecting. Use this feature for temporary investigation, not as a permanent solution.

Best for: Quick, visual inspection of all active network connections with process information.

Limitation: Doesn't show historical data — only current connections.

GlassWire

GlassWire is a popular network monitor with visual traffic graphs and application-level firewalling.

Key features:

• Visual traffic monitoring with graphs
• Breakdown by application, host, and traffic type
• Built-in firewall controls
• VirusTotal integration
• Helps identify unusual network activity

Best for: Users who prefer visual, easy-to-understand network monitoring.

Limitation: Free version has some limitations compared to the paid version.

How to Identify Suspicious Activity

Regardless of which tool you use, here's what to look for:

If you find something suspicious:

1. Note the process name and file path
2. Check the digital signature (right-click file → Properties → Digital Signatures)
3. Search the process name online
4. Upload suspicious files to VirusTotal for analysis, but avoid uploading files containing sensitive or private information

How SysPulse Can Help

Tools like Task Manager, Resource Monitor, and netstat are excellent for checking network activity at specific moments. But they don't alert you when something changes.

That's why I built SysPulse — a lightweight Windows security monitor that runs silently in the background and sends you Telegram alerts when monitored system activity changes.

Note: SysPulse monitors processes, startup changes, USB connections, and resource usage — it does not directly monitor network traffic. It's designed to help you stay aware of system changes that could indicate suspicious activity.

SysPulse can:

• Detect new processes — Every time an executable launches, SysPulse logs the name and full file path
• Monitor CPU and RAM anomalies — Get alerts when resource usage exceeds your thresholds
• Detect USB connections — Know instantly when someone plugs a USB drive into your PC
• Detect startup changes — Be alerted when a program adds itself to startup
• Send Telegram alerts — Get instant notifications even when you're away from your desk

SysPulse runs silently in the background, uses less than 30MB of RAM, and never touches your personal files — it watches system behavior, not your data.

Final Thought

Knowing which apps are sending your data over the internet is the first step toward better privacy and security.

Start with the simple tools:

1. Check Data Usage in Settings for a quick overview
2. Use Task Manager to see real-time activity
3. Investigate deeper with Resource Monitor

If you want full control, try Portmaster — it gives you the kind of granular oversight that Windows doesn't offer natively.

And if you want automated monitoring without checking manually every day, SysPulse can watch your system for you and alert you the moment something changes.

The key: Don't wait until something goes wrong. Know what your PC is sending — and to whom.
