A planetary diet framework can reduce campus food-related greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 40%. The approach shifts the campus meal mix toward plant-based options, sources locally, and tightens waste management. Implementing such a diet requires: 1) inventorying the current food supply chain and calculating its carbon footprint; 2) setting a target reduction; 3) redesigning menus to replace high-emission animal products with lower-emission plant proteins; 4) negotiating with local producers for seasonal, low-transportation ingredients; 5) installing waste-segregation stations and monitoring compostable output; and 6) engaging students through data dashboards that display the real-time impact of their meal choices. Theoretical models and limited case studies indicate that this structured, data-driven plan can bring emissions down toward the 40% mark. When students can see the quantified effect of their dietary choices on campus sustainability metrics, adoption rates increase.
