> **Quick Answer:** A failed clutch means your car cannot be driven safely. Towing runs $75 to $125 for a local haul under 10 miles, and $3 to $7 per mile after that. Most flatbed tows for a clutch failure land between $100 and $250 depending on your location and distance to the shop. Call a tow, not a friend with jumper cables. This one cannot be nursed home.

## Can I Still Drive My Car If the Clutch Went Out?
No. If the clutch disc or pressure plate has failed completely, you have no way to disengage the engine from the transmission, which means you cannot shift gears or get the car moving from a stop without stalling. Some drivers in this situation try to force starts in first gear without the clutch, which works in a parking lot emergency but destroys the drivetrain components if done repeatedly. Do not attempt to drive it to the shop. You need a tow.
If the clutch pedal went to the floor and stayed there, you likely lost hydraulic pressure in the slave cylinder or master cylinder, and that is a different failure. Check if the pedal pumps up with repeated presses. If it does, you may have a slow leak, and you might limp the car to a very nearby shop with caution. If the pedal is dead flat and lifeless, call a tow truck.
## How Much Does It Cost to Tow a Car With a Dead Clutch?
For a local tow under 10 miles, expect $75 to $125 as a base rate, plus a hookup fee that typically runs $35 to $60. Miles beyond the first 5 to 10 usually cost $3 to $7 each. A typical scenario where you break down 15 miles from your mechanic will run you $150 to $225 out of pocket if you are paying cash.
Manual transmission cars require a flatbed or a wheel-lift tow where the drive wheels are off the ground. Do not let a tow driver drag your car with the rear wheels rolling if it is rear-wheel drive, and never allow a front-wheel drive manual to be towed with the front wheels down. The transmission is already compromised. Adding tow damage on top of a clutch job is a bad day. [Towing a car 100 miles on the interstate](/how-much-to-tow-car-100-miles-interstate/) will cost considerably more, usually $350 to $600, so if you are far from home, call your insurance's roadside assistance first to check your covered limit.
## What Should I Do Right Now While I'm Stuck?
Get the car off the road immediately if it is not already. If your clutch failed mid-drive, you can still steer and brake. Coast to a side street, parking lot, or the shoulder. Put your hazards on, set the parking brake, and stay inside the vehicle if you are on a highway. A clutch failure is not a fire or a coolant emergency, so there is no reason to stand outside near moving traffic.
Once you are safely stopped:
1. Call a tow truck. Give them your exact location, car make and model, and tell them it is a manual transmission with a failed clutch so they bring the right equipment.
2. Check your insurance policy or roadside assistance app. Many policies through State Farm, GEICO, USAA, and AAA cover towing, sometimes for free up to a set distance.
3. Contact your mechanic before the tow arri

ves to confirm they can take the car today or have you use a drop box.
4. If you are on an active highway or interstate, call 511 (your state's road condition and traffic service) or 911 if you cannot safely exit the lane of traffic.
Clutch repairs typically run $500 to $1,500 for parts and labor depending on the car. A Subaru WRX or Honda Civic clutch job is on the lower end. A truck or performance vehicle clutch can push past $1,200 easily. Get a quote before authorizing work.
## Will My Insurance or Roadside Plan Cover This Tow?
Most roadside assistance plans do cover a tow for a mechanical breakdown, including a failed clutch. AAA, for example, covers 3 to 7 miles free depending on your membership tier, then charges per mile beyond that. USAA's roadside assistance through their insurance covers towing to the nearest qualified repair facility. Check your specific coverage limits before you assume it is free. [USAA towing coverage](/usaa-towing-coverage-how-much-does-it-pay/) varies by policy, and knowing your cap in advance saves an unpleasant surprise at the shop.
If you have no roadside coverage, search for local tow companies rather than calling a national dispatch service. National services often mark up the rate or have slower response times because they are brokering the call to a local truck anyway.

## Common Questions
**Q: Can you tow a manual transmission car in neutral?**
A: Yes, most manual transmissions can be flat-towed in neutral, but only if the drivetrain and transmission are still intact. If the clutch failed due to a seized component, confirm with the tow driver before rolling any wheels. When in doubt, use a flatbed.
**Q: How do I know if it is the clutch or the slave cylinder that failed?**
A: If the pedal feels springy or pumps up temporarily, it is usually a hydraulic failure, either the slave or master cylinder. If the pedal is firm but the car will not disengage gears, the clutch disc or pressure plate is likely the problem. A hydraulic failure is often cheaper to fix than a full clutch replacement.
**Q: Is it worth fixing a clutch, or should I just sell the car?**
A: If the car has low mileage and is otherwise solid, fix it. A clutch is a wear item, not a sign the car is failing. If the car already has other major issues, get a mechanic's honest assessment before spending $800 on a clutch for a car worth $1,200.
**Q: How long does a clutch tow usually take to arrive?**
A: In urban and suburban areas, most tow trucks arrive within 30 to 60 minutes. Rural areas can push that to 90 minutes or more. Call as soon as you are safely stopped, not after you have tried to fix it yourself for an hour.
**Q: Can a manual car be jump started if the clutch is out?**
A: Jump starting will not help a clutch failure. The problem is mechanical, not electrical. If the car will not move because the clutch is gone, no amount of battery power fixes that.
