If you've ever moved photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC and seen a .HEIC extension, you've probably had this problem:
The image looks completely normal on the iPhone, but suddenly won't open, upload, or work somewhere else.
The reason is simple: newer iPhones often save photos as HEIC instead of JPG.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's commonly used implementation of the HEIF image format.
The technical advantage is compression efficiency.
Compared with traditional JPEG, HEIC can store high-quality image data more efficiently. That's useful when you're taking thousands of photos on a phone where storage matters.
But there's a catch.
JPEG has been the internet's default image format for decades. Almost every browser, website, CMS, image editor, and device understands it.
HEIC support is much less universal.
So the problem usually isn't that your image is corrupted.
The software simply doesn't support the format.
Why converting to JPG still matters
JPG isn't necessarily the "better" format technically. It's just more compatible.
You'll usually need to convert HEIC when:
A website doesn't accept .HEIC
You're using older Windows software
An online form only accepts JPG or PNG
You need to share images across different platforms
A client specifically requests JPEG files
For those cases, converting makes more sense than changing your iPhone camera settings permanently.

The practical approach
I wouldn't recommend converting your entire photo library.
HEIC is actually useful for keeping file sizes efficient. Keep your originals as HEIC if your workflow supports them.
Convert only when compatibility becomes a problem.
That's really the story behind HEIC vs JPG:
HEIC is optimized for modern storage. JPG is optimized for compatibility.
And unfortunately, compatibility still wins surprisingly often.
