USAA Towing Coverage: How Much Does It Pay?: What To Do Next

> **Quick Answer:** USAA's roadside assistance coverage pays for towing as part of its Emergency Road Service add-on. Most members get reimbursed up to around $75 to $150 per tow, though the exact limit depends on your specific policy. USAA also offers Roadside Assistance through a subscription that dispatches help directly. Check your declarations page or call USAA before you assume you're covered. The benefit amount is not unlimited.

## How Much Will USAA Actually Pay for a Tow?

USAA's Emergency Road Service benefit typically reimburses towing costs up to the limit listed on your policy, which is commonly in the $75 to $150 range per incident. That covers a standard local tow in most markets, but if you're on a rural highway or need a flatbed to a specialty shop, you can easily exceed that cap.

Here's the breakdown of what USAA offers:

- **Emergency Road Service (add-on to auto policy):** Covers towing, flat tire change, battery jump, fuel delivery, and lockout service up to your policy's per-incident limit. You arrange the tow yourself and submit for reimbursement, or use USAA's dispatch line.
- **USAA Roadside Assistance (subscription service):** A separate product. Dispatches a provider to you. Towing benefit amount depends on the plan tier you selected when you enrolled.
- **Comprehensive or collision claim:** If your car was damaged in a covered event, like a crash or flooding, the tow to the repair shop may be covered under that claim with no separate dollar cap, subject to your deductible.

If you need a long haul tow, the out-of-pocket difference can be significant. A 100-mile interstate tow can run $300 or more. [See what that actually costs before you assume your coverage handles it.](/how-much-to-tow-car-100-miles-interstate/)

## Does USAA Cover Towing After an Accident or Just Breakdowns?

It covers both, but under different parts of your policy. A breakdown tow falls under Emergency Road Service. A post-accident tow typically falls under your comprehensive or collision coverage, tied to the accident claim itself.

The distinction matters. If you use your Emergency Road Service benefit for a breakdown, it usually does not count against your collision deductible. But if you were in an accident and try to file the tow under roadside instead of the collision claim, you may hit a low dollar cap and end up paying the difference. Always tell USAA upfront whether this is a breakdown or an accident. The rep will route your call to the right department and apply the right benefit.

One important detail: USAA uses Agero as its third-party roadside dispatch network. When you call for service, you may be connected through Agero's system, not USAA's main claims line. Keep that in mind if you're tracking down your call history later.

## What If the Tow Costs More Than USAA's Limit?

You pay the difference out of pocket, billed directly by the tow company. USAA does not negotiate on your behalf after the fact for amounts over your benefit limit.

To minimize that gap:

1. Call USAA's roadside dispatch line before you call a random tow truck. They have contracted rates with network providers, which sometimes keeps costs within your limit.
2. Ask the tow company for the total estimate before you authorize the tow. Get it in writing or at minimum on a recorded call.
3. If you're stuck somewhere like a constructio

n zone or highway and have no choice, document everything. Some states have laws capping non-consensual tow rates, which may apply if police called the tow. [Know what your rights are if you're broken down in a dangerous spot.](/car-breakdown-in-construction-zone-safety-protocol/)

If your car has a mechanical failure and you end up needing a long distance tow, your bill could run well past what USAA pays. A seizing engine, for example, often means a flatbed haul to a dealer, not just the nearest garage. ## How Do You Actually Use USAA Towing Coverage in the Field?

Call USAA at the number on the back of your insurance card. Tell them you need roadside assistance. They'll dispatch through their network or instruct you to arrange a tow and submit receipts for reimbursement.

If you arranged a tow on your own before calling USAA, save every receipt and take a photo of the tow truck's markings, the driver's name, and the invoice. Submit through the USAA mobile app or your online account under the claims or roadside reimbursement section. Reimbursement requests typically need to be submitted within 90 days of the incident, though your policy paperwork will have the exact window. Do not assume they'll pay without documentation.

## Common Questions

**Q: Does USAA roadside assistance have a limit on how many times I can use it per year?**
A: Yes. Most USAA Emergency Road Service policies limit you to a set number of incidents per year, often four. After that, you pay out of pocket. Check your declarations page for your specific limit.

**Q: Can I use USAA towing coverage if my car broke down in another state?**
A: Yes. USAA's roadside benefit applies nationwide. Coverage does not change based on which state you're in, though the tow truck rates in that area may push you over your benefit limit faster in high-cost markets.

**Q: Will using USAA roadside assistance raise my premium?**
A: Using the roadside assistance benefit, as opposed to filing an at-fault accident claim, does not typically cause a rate increase. It is not a chargeable event under most USAA auto policies, but confirm with your agent since policy structures can vary.

**Q: What's the difference between USAA Emergency Road Service and USAA Roadside Assistance?**
A: Emergency Road Service is an add-on to your auto insurance policy and reimburses you up to a set dollar amount. USAA Roadside Assistance is a standalone subscription product that dispatches help directly. They are separate products with separate enrollment and billing.

**Q: What if the tow truck USAA sends damages my car?**
A: Document the damage before the truck leaves the scene. Photograph the car from multiple angles. Report it to USAA immediately. Claims against third-party contractors like Agero are handled through USAA, and you should not have to chase the tow company independently.
