August turned out to be a pretty big month for Invoiso.
What started as a simple offline invoicing application has grown into a much more complete invoicing and quotation manager for freelancers and small businesses.
With v4.3.9, we focused on making Invoiso easier to use internationally, improving the first-run experience, giving users more control over invoices, and taking the first steps toward Android support.
Invoiso is free, open source, and MIT licensed.
Here are some of the highlights.
🌍 Invoiso now speaks 7 languages
One of the biggest changes in this release is the new localized application interface.
The UI is now available in:
- 🇬🇧 English
- 🇮🇳 Hindi
- 🇳🇵 Nepali
- 🇹🇼 Tibetan
- 🇫🇷 French
- 🇪🇸 Spanish
- 🇨🇳 Chinese (Simplified)
You can switch languages directly from the application settings.
The non-English translations are currently machine-translated drafts and are marked as Beta. If you speak one of these languages and notice a translation that could be improved, contributions and corrections are very welcome.
For now, generated invoice PDFs remain in English. Localizing PDF documents is a separate challenge because it involves not only translating strings but also handling fonts, scripts, text direction, and document layout.
That's something I'd like to tackle next.
🧭 A proper first-run experience
Previously, a new user could log in and immediately land on an almost empty dashboard.
That wasn't a great first experience.
v4.3.9 introduces a one-time onboarding wizard that walks new users through the initial configuration:
- Company details
- Invoice settings
- Invoice appearance
- Confirmation
The wizard is completely skippable.
Each step saves independently, so even if you close the wizard halfway through, the information you've already entered isn't lost.
This is a small feature, but it makes a fresh installation feel much more like a finished application.
🔢 Finally, full control over invoice numbers
Invoice numbering sounds simple until different businesses start asking for different formats.
With the new invoice numbering options, users can now:
- Configure longer invoice prefixes
- Remove zero-padding
- Choose the starting invoice number
- Hide the invoice number from the generated PDF
For example:
INV-0007
can now become:
INV-7
And if a business already maintains its own numbering system, the invoice number can be hidden from the PDF entirely.
📑 Customer statements
Another useful addition is the new Customer Statement PDF.
From the Reports section, you can generate a running statement for a customer containing:
- Invoices
- Payments
- Outstanding amounts
- Running balances
This is particularly useful for businesses that sell on credit and need to provide customers with an account statement.
💱 International currencies and number-to-words
Invoiso can now work with all supported world currencies, including the newly added XOF (West African CFA franc).
The amount-in-words functionality has also been improved to follow the conventions of the selected currency instead of assuming a single numbering/currency style.
Supporting currencies also means supporting their writing systems.
So this release adds additional fonts for scripts including:
- Arabic
- Bengali
- Thai
- Khmer
- Myanmar
- Georgian
- Armenian
- Tibetan
This was one of those features that looked straightforward initially and quickly turned into a much bigger font-rendering problem.
A currency symbol is only useful if the PDF renderer can actually display it correctly.
🇮🇳 Better GST support
For Indian businesses, v4.3.9 continues improving GST support.
You can now:
- Enter prices with tax already included
- Automatically calculate the tax-exclusive base amount
- Display CGST and SGST columns on invoice PDFs
- Add an FSSAI code to company information
- Select GST document types such as Tax Invoice and Bill of Supply
These options are intended to make Invoiso more practical for small businesses operating in India.
📦 A more flexible product catalog
The product management system received several improvements.
Unlimited stock
Products can now have unlimited stock.
This is useful for:
- Services
- Digital products
- Products that don't need inventory tracking
Custom metadata
Products can also have custom metadata fields, allowing businesses to store information that isn't part of the standard product fields.
Simpler product forms
Optional fields can now be hidden from the product form.
For example, if you don't use:
- Alias
- Tax rate
- HSN/SAC
- Description
- Purchase price
- Discount
- Unit
- Product type
you can hide them and keep the product form much simpler.
Duplicate invoice items
The same product can now appear multiple times as separate line items on an invoice.
This is useful when the same product needs to be listed separately for different purposes or pricing.
🔎 Better invoice management
The invoice list received filtering and sorting improvements.
You can now filter invoices by:
- Date
- Status
- Invoice ID
And sort the list by column.
CSV imports for customers and products have also been improved.
Large imports now display a progress dialog instead of making the application appear as if it has stopped responding.
🔐 Password reset
The login experience has also been improved.
v4.3.9 introduces a proper Forgot Password flow along with clearer guidance for users who are logging in for the first time.
🤖 Early Android support
This is probably the most experimental part of the release.
Invoiso can now run on Android tablets.
This includes Android-specific build work, application icons, and layout optimizations to make the desktop-oriented interface work better on larger Android screens.
It's still early access and there is plenty of room for improvement, but the core application is already usable on a tablet.
The next question is how far to take mobile support.
✨ A lot of UI work happened behind the scenes
Several major screens were redesigned or refined:
- Create Invoice
- Invoice Management
- Invoice Settings
- Customer Management
- Product Management
- User Management
- PDF Settings
The customer selector in the invoice screen is now a searchable field rather than a traditional dropdown.
Keyboard navigation has also been improved with better tab traversal and additional shortcuts for common actions.
PDF customization received several improvements too.
You can now independently control whether the following appear on generated PDFs:
- Company name
- Phone
- Address
There's also a separate font-size setting for the company name.
Other PDF improvements include:
- Tighter layouts
- Round-off row with its own setting
- Improved notes labels
- Signature, UPI, and bank details displayed on a single line
- Larger logo upload support
Status summary cards on the Products and Customers screens can also be hidden if you prefer a cleaner interface.
And on Windows, the installer no longer depends on vc_redist.x64.exe.
🐛 Bug fixes
Of course, a release this large also came with a long list of fixes.
Some of the notable ones:
- Fixed invoice cloning failures
- Fixed customer search in the Create Invoice screen
- Fixed incorrect GSTIN labeling on the customer page
- Fixed PDF date formatting
- Fixed dates in bulk PDF exports
- Fixed login responsiveness on small windows
- Fixed the Reports screen not displaying the latest data
- Fixed several tax calculation edge cases
- Fixed multiple UI render-overflow issues
🛠️ Built with Flutter
Invoiso continues to be built with Flutter, with SQLite used for local data storage.
The goal remains to keep the application:
- Offline-first
- Cross-platform
- Open source
- Lightweight
- Simple enough for small businesses
The same codebase currently targets desktop platforms and is now making its first steps onto Android tablets.
📈 What's next?
There are still plenty of things on the roadmap.
Some of the things I'm currently considering include:
- Landscape PDF layouts
- Localized invoice PDFs
- More PDF templates
- Better mobile support
- Cloud synchronization
- Automated backups
- More regional tax features
One of the interesting challenges with an open-source project is deciding what to build next.
So I'm curious:
What would you find most useful?
- ☁️ Cloud sync
- 📱 A proper mobile phone version
- 💾 Automated cloud backups
- 🧾 More invoice/PDF templates
- 🌍 More languages
- 🧮 More regional tax support
Let me know in the comments.
