Registration Numbers Are Hard Filters: Structure Your Trade CV Top-Down

TL;DR

• An ATS parses your CV top-down, so put your highest-value tokens (Gas Safe number, NVQ Level 3, unvented G3) where the parser reaches them first
• Registration numbers and qualification codes act as exact-match hard filters, so spell out both the long form and the abbreviation the first time you use each
• Pair each token with a metric so the same line clears the parser and convinces the human who reads it next

If you have ever fault-found a system, you already think the way a CV parser does: check the inputs against a spec and reject anything that does not match. An Applicant Tracking System scans your CV top-down and scores it against a fixed list of required tokens like Gas Safe, NVQ Level 3 and unvented G3. When I was building CVPilot I read a lot of trade CVs, and one structural fault kept showing up: the most valuable token, the Gas Safe registration, sat at the very bottom, where a top-down parser and a skimming recruiter both reach it last. This guide treats your qualifications as filter inputs and shows where they belong on the page.

Plumber CV Keywords: The 2026 ATS Guide

You can wipe a floor with any other plumber on the callout, but if your CV never reaches a human being, none of that skill counts. Most large plumbing firms, facilities companies, and housing associations now run applications through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before a manager ever sees them.

The filter does not care how neat your first fix is. It scans for specific words, cards, and registrations, and it rejects anything that does not match. Your job is to feed that filter the exact terms it is hunting for, then let your track record close the deal.

This guide is written for UK plumbers and heating engineers at every stage, from apprentice to sole trader. We will cover the qualifications that get flagged, the trade vocabulary that matters, and how to put real numbers on your work. If you want the wider theory first, read our complete ATS-friendly CV guide, then come back here for the trade specifics.

Why the ATS Rejects Good Plumbers

An ATS is a database, not a judge of craftsmanship. When a firm posts a role for a heating engineer, the hiring manager sets search terms like "Gas Safe", "combi boiler", and "NVQ Level 3". Every CV gets scored against those terms.

If your CV says "did boilers and central heating" while the job asks for "boiler installation and servicing", you can lose points on a match you clearly deserve. The machine reads literally, so you have to write literally.

The fix is not stuffing your CV with jargon. It is using the correct, full terms that appear in the job advert, spelled out properly, including the abbreviation and the long form the first time you use each one.

Key Takeaway: The ATS matches words, not talent. Mirror the exact qualifications and trade terms from the job advert, in full, or a genuinely strong plumber gets filtered out before a human reads a single line.

The Qualifications and Cards the Filter Hunts For

UK plumbing is regulated, and recruiters lean hard on cards and registrations to screen fast. These are the hard filters. If a role touches gas, the single most important line on your CV is your Gas Safe registration, and we will come back to why.

List your qualifications with both the full name and the code, because the ATS may be searching for either. Here are the terms worth including when they apply to you.

If you hold a card, name it exactly. A recruiter filtering for "unvented" or "G3" needs that string on the page. Never assume the reader will infer a qualification from your job history, because the machine reading first cannot infer anything.

Key Takeaway: Spell out every card and code in full, both the long name and the abbreviation. NVQ Level 3, Gas Safe, WRAS, G3, ACS, and CSCS are the strings the filter searches, so give it exactly those.

The Gas Safe Point Nobody Tells You

Here is the contrarian bit. Gas Safe registration is the single most commercially valuable line on a heating engineer's CV, and most plumbers bury it in a certifications list at the very bottom of the page.

That is a costly habit. On any gas or heating role, Gas Safe is a legal hard filter. No registration means no callback, full stop, and the recruiter is often skimming for it in the top third of your CV.

Put your Gas Safe status and your registration number in your professional summary, right at the top, and again in your skills. If you also hold ACS modules like CCN1 or CENWAT, list them beside it. Make the reader see your registration in the first five seconds, not the last.

Key Takeaway: For any heating or gas role, move Gas Safe registration and your number to the top of the CV. It is a legal filter and a commercial asset, so treat it as a headline, not a footnote.

Trade Vocabulary That Signals You Actually Do the Work

Cards prove you are qualified. Sector vocabulary proves you are experienced. A good plumbing CV is dense with the specific language of the work, because that is what a hiring manager who knows the trade scans for once you clear the ATS.

Weave these into your bullet points naturally, matching the words in the advert. Do not list them in a wall, but do make sure the relevant ones appear.

• Installation and pipework: first fix, second fix, soil stack, waste, commercial pipework, soldering, press fit, copper and plastic pipework
• Heating systems: central heating, combi boiler, system boiler, power flush, boiler servicing, boiler installation, TRVs, megaflo, unvented cylinders
• Bathrooms and domestic: bathroom installation, wet rooms, tiling, domestic plumbing, maintenance plumbing
• Compliance and diagnostics: fault finding, landlord gas safety certificate, CP12, Water Regulations compliance, risk assessment

Match the sector too. If the role is commercial, lead with commercial pipework and larger systems. If it is domestic, lead with bathrooms, combi boilers, and callouts. The right vocabulary tells the reader you have done their specific job, not just a job that sounds similar.

Key Takeaway: Load your bullets with real trade terms like first fix, power flush, CP12, and unvented cylinders. This language proves hands-on experience to the human who reads your CV after the filter passes it through.

Put Numbers on Your Work

Most plumbing CVs describe duties. Strong ones describe results. A number turns a vague claim into evidence, and it makes a hiring manager stop scrolling.

You already track this data in your head, on your job sheets, and in your reviews. Pull it out. Boiler installs per month, first-time fix rate, jobs completed, contract values, callback rate, and customer ratings all carry weight.

Here is how the same experience reads before and after you add specifics.

Notice how each strong bullet keeps the keywords and adds a figure. You are feeding the ATS and impressing the human in the same line. A number beside a keyword is the most persuasive thing you can put on a trade CV. Tools like CVPilot flag which of your bullets are missing quantified results so you can fix the weak ones fast.

Key Takeaway: Turn duties into evidence with numbers. First-time fix rate, installs per month, callback rate, and contract values make your experience concrete and credible to a busy hiring manager.

Match Your CV to Where You Are in the Trade

The right keywords shift as you progress, so tailor the emphasis to your stage rather than sending one CV everywhere.

Apprentice and newly qualified

Lead with your NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 progress, your college, and the range of work you have shadowed and done. Mention first fix, second fix, and the systems you have touched. Reliability and willingness to learn are genuine selling points here, so say them plainly.

Qualified plumber to plumbing and heating engineer

Now Gas Safe registration and ACS modules become the headline for heating roles. Show the breadth, from boiler installs and servicing to unvented cylinders and full system upgrades, with numbers on each.

Supervisor and self-employed

Add the leadership and business terms. Team supervision, subcontractor management, CDM awareness, quoting, and contract values matter for supervisor roles. If you are a sole trader, frame it as running a business with customer ratings, repeat clients, and compliance records. Self-employment is experience, so present it as a track record, not a gap. A quick pass through CVPilot will tell you whether your CV reads at the level you are targeting.

Key Takeaway: Weight your keywords to your career stage. Apprentices lead with NVQ progress, engineers lead with Gas Safe and breadth, and supervisors or sole traders lead with leadership, contracts, and business results.

Put It All Together

A plumbing CV that beats the ATS is simple in principle. Get your cards and registrations named in full near the top, load your bullets with real trade vocabulary, and back every claim with a number.

Do that, and you clear the filter and land in front of a human who recognises a professional the moment they read your work. Your skill was never the problem, so stop letting the format hide it. Run your CV through CVPilot to check your keyword match and ATS score before you apply.
