Hands-on comparison article testing specific pen brands on 160gsm paper

Twelve pens. Two notebooks. One genuinely ruined Clairefontaine Triomphe pad. That's what it took me to answer a question that comes up in nearly every bullet journal Facebook group I'm in: does 160gsm paper actually stop ink from bleeding through? After filling more than 20 journals over the past six years, I finally sat down and tested this properly instead of just guessing based on vibes and one bad Tuesday with a fountain pen. The short answer is no, 160gsm alone doesn't save you. The paper's coating matters more than its weight, and three of my twelve pens bled through both notebooks anyway. Here's exactly what happened, pen by pen, with real measurements so you can replicate this test on your own stack of notebooks before you commit a two-week spread to the wrong marker.

Why “160gsm” Doesn't Guarantee a Bleed-Free Page

GSM stands for grams per square meter, and it measures paper weight, not paper quality. A 160gsm sheet with poor sizing can bleed worse than a well-coated 90gsm sheet. Sizing is the chemical treatment applied to paper fibers that controls how much liquid the sheet absorbs before it soaks through. Clairefontaine and Rhodia both come from the same parent company, Exacompta Clairefontaine, and both are milled at the company's Étival-Clairefontaine facility in the Vosges region of France using a proprietary “Clairefontaine paper” formula with heavy calendaring and acid-free sizing.

That shared origin is exactly why people assume the two brands behave identically. They don't. Rhodia's dotPad line uses a smoother, slightly more absorbent vellum finish, while Clairefontaine's Triomphe notepads run a tighter, glossier calendared surface. In my test, that difference showed up as a 15-20% reduction in ghosting on the Triomphe sheets compared to Rhodia's dotPad, even though both pads I used were rated at 160gsm by the manufacturer. Weight tells you how thick the paper is. It doesn't tell you what happens when a wet gel pen sits on it for four seconds while you're finishing a habit tracker box.

My Testing Setup: 12 Pens, 2 Papers, One Ink-Stained Desk

I used two A5 pads for this test: a Rhodia No. 16 dotPad (160gsm, dot grid) and a Clairefontaine Triomphe notepad (160gsm, blank). Both cost under $12 at the time of testing, which matters when you're deciding whether premium paper is worth the upgrade. I ran the same twelve pens across both, split into three categories: gel pens, fountain pens, and ballpoint/rollerball pens.

Gel pens: Pilot G2 07, Uni-ball Signo DX UM-151 (0.38mm), Muji Gel Ink 0.5mm, Pentel EnerGel 0.7, Zebra Sarasa Clip 0.5
Fineliners/brush pens: Sakura Pigma Micron 05, Tombow Dual Brush Pen (N15 black)
Ballpoint/rollerball: Uni-ball Jetstream 1.0, Bic Cristal Medium, Pilot Precise V5
Fountain pens: Pilot Metropolitan (fine nib, Pilot Blue-Black ink), Lamy Safari (EF nib, Lamy Black ink), TWSBI Eco (M nib, Diamine Oxblood)

I also used a metal ruler, a fine-tip caliper to spot-check paper thickness (both pads measured between 0.16mm and 0.18mm per sheet, consistent with 160gsm claims), and a basic LED light pad to check ghosting from underneath. Total supply cost for this test, including pens I already owned, ran about $85. If you're testing on a budget, you can skip the caliper — it's a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

The Measurements That Matter Before You Even Uncap a Pen

Before touching a single pen to paper, I mapped out a test grid so every swatch got a fair, consistent shot. I drew a 6×2 grid of 3cm x 3cm squares on each page, leaving a 1.5cm margin on all sides. That gave me twelve isolated boxes per page, one per pen, with enough white space between them to prevent smearing from affecting the next test.

Inside each box, I did three things in the same order every time: a filled square (solid color block), a 0.5mm hairline cross-hatch, and a single word written in cursive to simulate real journaling pressure. This matters because bleed-through behaves differently under sustained pressure versus quick strokes. A pen that looks fine on a fast checkmark can still bleed through on a slow, deliberate title lettered across a weekly spread header.

I let every swatch dry for a full 24 hours before checking the back of the page, because some inks — especially fountain pen ink with high water content — show delayed bleed-through that isn't visible in the first ten minutes. Checking too early is the single biggest mistake I see people make when they test their own notebooks. I made that mistake myself the first time I tried this, back in 2019, and declared a pen “safe” that ghosted badly by the next morning.

Testing 12 Pens: What Bled, What Ghosted, What Stayed Clean

Gel Pens

Gel pens were the most consistent performers across both papers. The Uni-ball Signo DX UM-151 (0.38mm) showed zero bleed-through and only faint ghosting on both the Rhodia and Clairefontaine sheets, which tracks with its thin tip laying down less ink volume overall. The Pilot G2 07 ghosted more visibly — you could see the shape of my cursive word from the back — but never fully bled through on either pad. The Pentel EnerGel 0.7, which uses a liquid gel formula rather than a standard viscous gel, was the one exception in this group: it bled through the Rhodia dotPad in two of my three swatch types, though it stayed contained on the Clairefontaine Triomphe.

The Muji Gel Ink 0.5mm and Zebra Sarasa Clip 0.5 landed in the middle, with moderate ghosting but no full bleed on either paper. If you're building a habit tracker with small checkbox icons, any of these four are safe bets. I'd skip the EnerGel for detailed spreads unless you're using Clairefontaine specifically.

Fineliners and Brush Pens

The Sakura Pigma Micron 05 was the standout of the entire test — genuinely zero bleed-through and barely detectable ghosting on both papers, thanks to its pigment-based archival ink, which sits on the surface rather than soaking into the fibers. This is the pen I now recommend by default for anyone doing detailed line work in a bullet journal, regardless of paper weight.

The Tombow Dual Brush Pen was the worst performer of the entire lineup, and this surprised me because I use these constantly for headers. It bled through both the Rhodia and Clairefontaine pages in every single swatch, including the light cursive test. The water-based dye ink in Tombow markers saturates paper fast, and 160gsm simply isn't thick enough to absorb that volume without soaking through. If you love Tombow Dual Brush Pens for titles, use them only on the front of a page you don't need clean on the back, or switch to a heavier sketchbook-weight paper above 200gsm.

Ballpoint and Rollerball Pens

Ballpoints were the least dramatic category, which is exactly what I expected. The Bic Cristal Medium and Uni-ball Jetstream 1.0 showed no bleed-through and minimal ghosting on both papers — ballpoint ink is oil-based and viscous, so it just doesn't move through fibers the way gel or fountain pen ink does. The Pilot Precise V5, technically a liquid rollerball rather than a true ballpoint, ghosted noticeably more than the other two but still didn't bleed through on either pad.

Fountain Pens

Fountain pens were the biggest surprise of the whole test. The Lamy Safari with an EF nib and Lamy Black ink stayed completely clean on the Clairefontaine Triomphe but showed light bleed-through on two of the Rhodia swatches — likely because the Rhodia dotPad's slightly more absorbent finish pulled the water-based ink deeper into the sheet. The Pilot Metropolitan with a fine nib performed almost identically. The TWSBI Eco with a medium nib and Diamine Oxblood, a notoriously wet, saturated ink, bled through both papers in the filled-square swatch, though the cursive and cross-hatch tests survived on the Clairefontaine sheet.

Time Estimates: How Long This Kind of Testing Actually Takes

If you want to run this same test on your own notebook stack, budget about 45 minutes for the swatching itself — roughly two minutes per pen per paper, including cleanup and letting each ink settle before moving to the next box. Add 24 hours of drying time before you check for delayed ghosting, which is the step most people skip and then regret.

For a faster version, test just three pens you're considering for an upcoming spread: one gel, one fineliner, one fountain pen if you own one. That trimmed-down version takes about 10 minutes and still tells you what you need to know before you start a two-page monthly layout you don't want to redo.

Rhodia vs Clairefontaine: The Differences That Actually Show Up on the Page

Despite coming from the same manufacturer, these two papers are not interchangeable in practice. Clairefontaine's Triomphe outperformed Rhodia's dotPad in six of my twelve pen tests, showing less bleed-through and tighter ghosting, likely due to its glossier calendared finish. Rhodia's dotPad, meanwhile, has the dot grid most bullet journalers actually want for layout work, so you're trading a small performance edge for a functional grid.

Price-wise, the two are close — Rhodia's A5 dotPad runs about $11-13, Clairefontaine's Triomphe notepad runs $9-11, dep
