Astrology, the I Ching, and Complex Systems: Searching for the Bridge Between Superstition and Science

Astrology predicts major human events by observing the relative positions of planets and Earth. Can this logic stand up to scrutiny? This article attempts to give a serious answer — from the perspective of complex systems theory.

I. Introduction: Ridiculed Wisdom

Astrology and the Chinese I Ching (易经 / Eight Trigrams) are often dismissed as quintessential examples of "superstition" or "pseudoscience." Within the modern scientific framework, using the positions of celestial bodies to predict human behavior and historical events sounds like an absurd proposition.

Yet, if we temporarily set aside our dismissive attitude and dive into the internal logic of these ancient systems, we might discover something unexpected: they are not entirely without foundation. They harbor a nascent form of complex systems thinking — and this very way of thinking is now being rediscovered and formalized in the field of artificial intelligence as "Multi-Agent Systems."

This article argues: The core logic behind astrology and the I Ching — that celestial positions influence human affairs — is not entirely absurd within the framework of complex systems theory. The problem is not that the direction is wrong; it's that the tools are imprecise.

II. Starting Point: The Moon and Tides

Let's begin with an undeniable fact:

The Moon's position — its relative location to Earth — demonstrably influences a physical phenomenon on our planet: the tides.

This is a direct consequence of gravitational physics. When the Moon aligns with one side of Earth, its gravity pulls the ocean outward, creating high tide; as it moves to the opposite side, we get low tide. This is perfectly explained by modern physics. No one questions it.

📖 Reference: NOAA Ocean Service — "What are tides?" | https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/tutorial_tides/

Now, let's take one step further.

If the Moon's gravity can affect the macroscopic movement of oceans, could the Moon's position relative to the Sun and other planets also create measurable effects on other "systems" here on Earth?

The Sun's rise and set regulates human melatonin production, thereby controlling our circadian rhythms. This is established science. So, could the relative positions of planets — as a complex combination of gravitational forces, electromagnetic radiation, and other physical factors — also influence human biochemistry through similar but more indirect mechanisms?

The real question is not "is this possible?" The real question is: do we currently possess precise enough instruments to measure it?

III. The Universe Is a Complex System

Traditional reductionist thinking tends to break the universe into isolated parts: this is the Sun, that's Earth, over there is Jupiter. Each is treated as an independent entity.

But complex systems theory offers a fundamentally different perspective:

The entire universe is a massive, dynamic, and mutually coupled complex system. No component in this system exists in isolation — every celestial body's position, trajectory, and relative angle continuously transmits "signals" to the whole (gravitational waves, electromagnetic radiation, particle streams...), while simultaneously being influenced by other components.

Within this framework, the idea that "planetary positions mutually influence each other" is not a metaphor — it is a physical fact.

Earth's orbit is perturbed by Jupiter's gravity. Jupiter's orbit is constrained by Saturn's influence. Saturn's position is connected to Neptune's dynamics through complex gravitational relationships. The entire solar system is a chaotic yet highly coupled precision mechanism.

So, why would this system's influence stop at "ocean tides"? Why would it not propagate downward into more complex layers?

IV. The Human Body Is Also a Complex System

Now, let's bring our focus back from the stars to the human body.

The human body is an extraordinarily complex system:

• Nervous System: A network of hundreds of billions of neurons communicating via electrical and chemical signals
• Endocrine System: The secretion and regulation of various hormones — from insulin to cortisol, from dopamine to melatonin
• Immune System: Complex responses to external stimuli
• Microbiome: The "gut-brain axis" communication between intestinal bacteria and the brain

These subsystems are tightly coupled and mutually influential. A fluctuation in one hormone level can alter a person's mood; mood changes can affect immune function; immune changes feed back into the hormonal system. This is a closed-loop, dynamic, complex network.

Now place these two complex systems together:

• The Large Complex System: The entire universe, where planetary positions mutually influence and dynamically evolve
• The Small Complex System: The human body, where hormones, nerves, and emotions are mutually coupled

Could a small shift in a variable of the large complex system (a change in planetary relative positions) propagate through some — currently unknown — physical mechanism into the small system, causing a measurable perturbation in its state?

V. From Physics to Chemistry, From Chemistry to Behavior

The chain of influence we have already scientifically observed looks like this:

Sun Position → Light Change → Retinal Perception → Hypothalamus Regulation → Melatonin Secretion → Circadian Rhythm → Behavioral Tendency

This is a complete "universe → human body" influence chain. It happens every single day. It is confirmed science.

Specifically:

VI. Solar Activity and Human Health (Frontier Science)

Modern science has uncovered additional links along the "solar activity → Earth's environment → human physiology" chain:

📖 Lunar Cycles and Human Sleep:

• Cajochen, C. et al. (2013). Evidence that the lunar cycle influences human sleep. Current Biology, 23(15), 1485–1488. DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2013.06.029 — After controlling for all known variables, the lunar cycle still significantly correlates with changes in human sleep architecture and melatonin secretion.

⚠️ Note: The above "solar activity → human health" research represents active scientific frontiers. Correlation has been documented, but the specific mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Unlike tidal mechanics and melatonin regulation, these associations cannot yet be called "established scientific facts" — but they point to a promising direction for further investigation.

VII. The Multi-Agent System Analogy

For those familiar with AI, here's an analogy that might help:

In the field of artificial intelligence, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) is a system composed of multiple autonomous decision-making "agents." Each agent has its own internal state, goals, and behavioral rules; agents interact through communication protocols, producing emergent behaviors that cannot be predicted by examining any single agent in isolation.

A canonical framework is ReAct (Reasoning + Acting): an agent first reasons based on its current state, then takes action; the outcome of the action feeds back into the state, forming the basis for new reasoning. This is a loop.

📖 Reference: Yao, S., Zhao, J., Yu, D. et al. (2022). ReAct: Synergizing Reasoning and Acting in Language Models. arXiv: 2210.03629 | https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03629 — Introduces the ReAct framework, where agents generate emergent behavior through a "reason → act → feedback" loop — an explicit demonstration of the emergence property in complex systems.

Now, let's map this framework onto the universe and humanity:

• The Universe = A massive-scale Multi-Agent System, where each celestial body is an "agent"
• Planetary Relative Positions = Communication signals between agents (gravity, radiation...)
• Individual humans on Earth = Another complex system, a "nested agent"
• Human behavior and historical events = Emergent behaviors

In this analogy, astrology and the I Ching are attempts to decode the "communication signals" within this large agent system and predict their influence on nested smaller systems.

This is not fundamentally different from what meteorologists do when they try to predict the behavior of the atmosphere — a complex system with countless interacting variables.

VIII. Critical Reflections: Why We Should Still Be Skeptical

Despite the relatively tolerant theoretical framework I've laid out above, we must清醒地认识到以下几点:

1. Correlation Does Not Imply Causation

Even if we accept that the universe influences the human body, the mechanism and pathway of this influence remain entirely unknown. We cannot infer from "the Moon causes tides" that "Saturn's position determines your career." Correlation exists; specific causal pathways are missing.

2. The Overfitting Problem of Symbolic Systems

Astrology and the I Ching employ heavily ambiguous symbols and interpretive frameworks. This ambiguity makes them capable of "explaining" almost any event — a hallmark of overfitting. In science, a theory that cannot be falsified is a theory to be suspicious of.

3. The Precision Problem

Even if we accept the general direction — that the universe influences human biology — existing astrological and I Ching systems fall far short of scientific standards in precision and reproducibility. Correct direction + crude tools = mostly wrong conclusions.

4. Survivorship Bias

We tend to remember the "successful" predictions and forget the vast number of failures. This is a natural flaw in human cognition and a universal challenge faced by all prophetic systems.

IX. Conclusion: Maintaining Open Skepticism

Are astrology and the I Ching superstition?

Partially.

Their current symbolic interpretation frameworks are filled with ambiguity, overfitting, and unfalsifiability — these are the hallmarks of "superstition" in the scientific sense.

But the core assumption beneath them — that the relative positions of celestial bodies in the universe produce measurable effects on living beings on Earth — is not absurd within a complex systems framework.

In fact, modern science has already uncovered a small piece of this chain: Sun → Light → Melatonin → Circadian Rhythm → Behavioral Tendency.

The existence of this chain gives us reason to believe: Between the known laws of physics and the unknown ones, there may be many more connections of this kind.

Astrology and the I Ching may be an imprecise, noisy, but directionally not entirely wrong ancient attempt. Their problem is not that they are "too crazy" — it's that they are too crude.

Just as astrology predicts major human events by observing planetary positions — if we interpret this methodology as "finding measurable signal correlations within a complex system" rather than "interpreting fate through zodiac symbols" — perhaps we can give this ancient wisdom a fairer assessment.

The Final Analogy:

500 years ago, people ridiculed the idea that "Earth might be a planet orbiting the Sun."

200 years ago, people ridiculed the idea that "invisible tiny organisms might cause disease."

50 years ago, people ridiculed the idea that "climate change might affect global agriculture."

Perhaps we are at a similar cognitive inflection point. Except this time, the object of ridicule is: could the universe — that complex system of countless mutually influencing celestial bodies — possibly influence every person living on Earth in some subtle but real way?

Time will tell.
