Verdict: Tim Cook's 15-year run as Apple CEO ended on August 31, 2026, with hardware chief John Ternus taking over on September 1 — and Cook's most consequential legacy isn't a product at all. It's the manufacturing base he built in India, where Foxconn, Tata Electronics and Pegatron assembled roughly 55 million iPhones in 2025 — about one in four made worldwide, per Bloomberg reporting — and shipped most of them to the United States, giving Apple its first real alternative to China in decades.
Last verified: 2026-09-02 · Cook is now executive chairman · Ternus became CEO effective September 1, 2026 · Apple's first event under Ternus: September 9, 2026 · India made ~55M iPhones in 2025 (~25% of global output)
Did Tim Cook actually step down as Apple CEO?
Yes. Apple announced in April 2026 that Cook would become executive chairman of the board and that John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, would become CEO effective September 1, 2026 — a transition the board approved unanimously Apple Newsroom. Cook worked approximately his last day as CEO on August 31, 2026, closing a tenure that began in August 2011, weeks before Steve Jobs died iClarified.
Cook isn't leaving. As executive chairman he will keep engaging with policymakers around the world — a role that matters enormously given the tariff and supply-chain politics described below Apple Newsroom.
Who is John Ternus, Apple's new CEO?
Ternus is a mechanical engineer who joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and spent nearly his entire career at the company Apple Newsroom. As hardware chief he oversaw the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods lines, drove the Apple silicon transition away from Intel, and pushed durability and repairability work like 3-D printed titanium in the Apple Watch Ultra 3. He joins the board of directors on the same day he becomes CEO, while longtime chairman Arthur Levinson shifts to lead independent director.
His first test comes fast: Apple's September 9, 2026 event — eight days into his tenure — is expected to feature the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max plus Apple's first foldable iPhone, reportedly called the iPhone Ultra MacRumors.
What did Tim Cook actually build in 15 years?
The numbers under Cook are stark. Apple's market value grew from roughly $350 billion when he took over in 2011 to several trillion dollars by 2026, its installed base passed 2.5 billion active devices, and the company cut its carbon footprint by more than 60% since 2015 iClarified. He also built businesses that didn't exist as meaningful revenue in 2011: Apple Watch, AirPods, and a services arm that now anchors the balance sheet.
But the operationally hardest thing Cook did was geographic, not product.
Why is India considered Cook's biggest legacy?
Because he turned a 2017 experiment — Wistron assembling the iPhone SE in Bengaluru — into Apple's second manufacturing superpower AppleInsider. The scale-up by the numbers:
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| iPhones assembled in India, 2025 | ~55 million (up ~53% from ~36M in 2024) | Bloomberg via MacRumors |
| Share of global iPhone output | ~25% (one in four) | Bloomberg via AppleMagazine |
| Share of H1 2025 India iPhone exports going to the US | 78% (vs ~50% a year earlier) | Canalys via Outlook Business |
| Manufacturing partners | Foxconn, Tata Electronics, Pegatron | AppleInsider |
Two things stand out. First, this is an export story, not just local assembly for Indian buyers: Apple has said the majority of iPhones sold in the US now have India as their country of origin, and the company wants to assemble most US-bound iPhones in India by the end of 2026 AppleInsider. Second, the whole current lineup — including Pro and Pro Max models — is now assembled in India in parallel with China, a first AppleMagazine.
The economics still aren't easy. Final assembly in India runs roughly 5–10% more expensive than in China because many components are still imported, and the smartphone production-linked incentives that offset that gap were set to expire March 31, 2026 — pushing Apple, Samsung and the Indian government into talks over a new incentive round AppleInsider. India's parallel push into a ₹62,500 crore mobile phone manufacturing scheme aimed at homegrown brands shows how much bigger the government's ambitions are than just Apple's contract work.
What challenges does John Ternus inherit?
Three, roughly in order of urgency:
- AI catch-up. Apple's delayed Siri overhaul — finally expected to ship publicly with iOS 27 around the September event — has been the company's most visible weakness TechGenyz. Ternus is a hardware engineer leading a company whose next fight is about models and assistants.
- Supply-chain and tariff politics. Cook's India pivot blunted US-China tariff risk, but component costs are rising (a DRAM shortage is reportedly constraining iPhone 18 Pro supply) and PLI renewal in India is unresolved TechGenyz. Cook staying on as executive chairman to work with policymakers is effectively Apple admitting this job isn't done.
- The next category. The rumored foldable [iPhone Ultra — possibly $2,000+, built on a 2nm A20 Pro chip — would be Apple's first new form factor since the iPhone X in 2017 MacRumors. Whether it lands like the iPhone or like the Vision Pro is Ternus's defining early question. On silicon, at least, he has momentum — see our look at the Apple M7 Ultra's 1.5TB unified memory play for AI servers.
What this means for you
If you build or buy tech for a business, the Cook→Ternus handover matters less for who holds the title and more for two structural shifts it confirms. One: "Made in India" is now a mainstream flag on premium hardware, which strengthens India's case in everything from semiconductor fab investments to the Taiwanese manufacturing investments reshaping southern Tamil Nadu — expect component suppliers, logistics and contract manufacturers to keep hiring there. Two: Apple's product risk profile is about to rise. A first-time CEO launching a $2,000 foldable eight days into the job is a company swinging again — and for buyers, that argues for waiting for the September 9 event before any premium iPhone purchase, since the iPhone 18 Pro and Ultra will reset the lineup.
