Google has expanded Gemini Notebook with Expert Intelligence, an initiative that lets users ground notebook interactions in trusted content, beginning with eligible ebooks they own through Google Play Books. The update makes books usable alongside a user's own materials, allowing Gemini Notebook to generate responses and learning artifacts based on the combined sources. For teams that need to turn authoritative material into usable guidance, the change offers a more source-centered way to work with AI.
According to Google's official Expert Intelligence announcement, the initial catalog includes more than 100,000 books from major publishers. Google describes the effort as a cross-Google initiative developed with authors and publishers, with broader availability planned over time across additional sources and platforms, including the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search.
How Expert Intelligence works in Gemini Notebook
The initial implementation is centered on books purchased through Google Play Books. A user can add a supported ebook to a Gemini Notebook, then use the book's content as a source for notebook interactions. Google says the notebook can combine that material with the user's own documents and other sources.
That distinction matters. This is not simply a general prompt asking Gemini to summarize a title from its training. The workflow is designed to use the content of a book the user owns as part of the notebook's source material. Google presents that approach as a way to engage with trusted content while preserving the link between access and ownership.
From source material to usable artifacts
Google says Expert Intelligence can create several kinds of outputs from a book's content, either on its own or in combination with a user's materials:
- Answers grounded in the book
- Infographics
- Audio overviews
- Quizzes
- Other notebook artifacts
The company's example involving Steven Pinker's The Sense of Style illustrates the intended use: a writer can bring the book into a notebook with a draft and use the book's guidance while working on the draft. More broadly, a user could combine a relevant title with internal notes or project materials to support a writing, strategy, or learning task.
| Source type in Gemini Notebook | How it is used | Access condition described by Google |
|---|---|---|
| User's own materials | Can be combined with book content in notebook interactions | No additional condition is specified in the announcement |
| Eligible Google Play Books | Can ground answers and generated artifacts | The user must own the book through Google Play Books |
Ownership is central to sharing
Expert Intelligence has an important limitation for collaborative notebooks. Google states that a collaborator who receives a shared notebook must also own the relevant Google Play Book to continue engaging with that book's content. Sharing the notebook does not give another person access to the book itself.
For businesses, that means access management remains part of the workflow. A manager cannot assume that a single book purchase will enable every colleague to use its contents in a shared notebook. Teams that want to build repeatable research or training workflows around a title will need to account for who owns the underlying book.
Google's announcement does not provide a separate price for Expert Intelligence. The confirmed requirement is ownership of the eligible title through Google Play Books, so the direct cost information available is tied to acquiring the book rather than to a stated standalone feature fee.
Why the update is useful for knowledge work
The practical value is in connecting AI outputs to material a user has deliberately selected. A business might use a book on writing, management, strategy, or another relevant subject alongside internal working documents, rather than relying only on a broad model response. Gemini Notebook can then help convert that material into formats suited to a particular task, such as an overview for review, a quiz for learning, or an infographic.
This does not remove the need for professional judgment. The most useful output will depend on the quality and relevance of the book and the user's other notebook sources. But the ability to work across trusted published content and user-provided material could make Gemini Notebook more practical for structured learning and document-based work.
Google is also working with authors including Steven Pinker, Michael Pollan, and Jennifer Wallace on curated Featured Notebooks. These notebooks point to a possible model for engaging with expert content in a more structured form, although Google has described books in Gemini Notebook as the starting point for a wider initiative rather than its final scope.
As more teams use Gemini and other AI assistants to research, write, and answer customer questions, it becomes more important to understand where a brand appears in those systems. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Expert Intelligence in Gemini Notebook?
Expert Intelligence is Google's initiative for grounding Gemini Notebook interactions in trusted sources. Its initial implementation lets users add eligible Google Play Books they own and use them alongside their own materials.
What can Gemini Notebook create from an eligible book?
Google says Gemini Notebook can generate answers, infographics, audio overviews, quizzes, and other artifacts based on the book's content, including in combination with a user's own sources.
Do collaborators need to own a book in a shared notebook?
Yes. Google says collaborators must own the relevant Google Play Book to engage further with that book's content in a shared notebook.
How many books are available through the initial offering?
Google says the initial offering covers more than 100,000 books from major publishers, with expansion to more sources and platforms planned over time.
Conclusion
Expert Intelligence gives Gemini Notebook a confirmed new path for working with published expertise: eligible Google Play Books can become grounded sources alongside a user's own material. The ownership requirement sets clear limits for shared workflows, but the combination of books, documents, and generated learning artifacts could make the tool more useful for source-led writing, research, and training tasks.
