NotebookLM's Short Video Overviews currently support English only, according to Google's product documentation. The feature can turn notebook sources into approximately 60-second vertical videos, but it is not the multilingual video-localization option. Businesses planning to create content in multiple languages should instead look at NotebookLM's Explainer Video Overviews, which Google lists as supporting a broad range of languages.
The distinction matters because the output format affects how teams can use NotebookLM for internal communication, education, and customer-facing content. A short, vertical video may suit a quick recap of source material, while multilingual needs require choosing the format that actually supports the intended language before building a workflow around it.
How NotebookLM's video overview options differ
Google's official NotebookLM help documentation separates its video formats by both presentation style and language availability. It explicitly states that Cinematic and Short Video Overviews only support English. The same documentation provides language options for Explainer Video Overviews, making that format the relevant choice when the source-based video needs to be produced in another supported language.
| NotebookLM format | What the verified documentation supports | Language availability |
|---|---|---|
| Short Video Overview | Approximately 60-second vertical video based on notebook sources | English only |
| Cinematic Video Overview | A distinct Video Overview format | English only |
| Explainer Video Overview | A Video Overview format with selectable language options | Multiple languages listed in NotebookLM documentation |
Google has expanded language support for other NotebookLM overview formats, including Audio Overviews and some Video Overview options. That broader support should not be treated as proof that every video style has the same language coverage. The available documentation draws a clear product boundary: Short Video Overviews are English-only, while Explainer Video Overviews are the multilingual format.
What this means for content and support teams
For an English-language audience, Short Video Overviews can be a useful way to convert a set of source documents into a compact vertical summary. This could be relevant when a team wants a quick internal briefing from existing material, or a short explanation based on a curated notebook.
However, businesses should avoid treating a source video as automatically ready for international audiences. If the goal is to explain the same material in several languages, selecting Explainer Video Overview is the documented path. The practical decision is not simply whether to generate a video. It is whether the desired format, language, and audience are aligned before production begins.
A sensible planning process is to:
- identify whether the output is for an English-speaking audience or requires localization
- choose Short Video Overview only when its English-only limitation fits the intended use
- use Explainer Video Overview when a supported non-English language is required
- review the resulting output before sharing it externally, particularly when the underlying sources contain product, policy, or customer information
Avoid confusing feature availability with language availability
NotebookLM's broader language expansion can make feature names easy to conflate. Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Cinematic Video Overviews, Short Video Overviews, and Explainer Video Overviews are related capabilities, but they do not necessarily have identical language options.
For decision-makers, this is a reminder to validate the specific format rather than relying on a general statement about a platform's multilingual support. A workflow built around a short-form English video may be useful for one purpose, but it is not equivalent to a multilingual content-production process. The documentation is the most reliable reference when product labels and language availability overlap.
