As an agency building AI-assisted web solutions for small local businesses, navigating the new Google AI Overviews and their impact on local SEO has been a critical learning curve. We've found that structured data and optimized content are paramount. This post details how we've adapted our Next.js and Vercel stack to ensure our clients' landing pages are AI-friendly, directly addressing the challenge of getting SMBs visible in an AI-first search world.
Imagine a customer searching for "best pizza near me" or "beauty salon with online appointments" on Google. Before, they'd see a list of links and maybe a map. Now, often, the first thing that appears is a "Google AI Overview": an AI-generated summary that offers a direct answer and, crucially, can include links and references to local businesses. If your business isn't there, it's as if it doesn't exist for those customers. For your local business to appear in Google AI Overview and capture that immediate attention, you must have a fast website with relevant content optimized for local searches, using structured Schema Markup, and ensuring Google clearly understands your business and its services. It's the most effective and affordable way to compete in today's search landscape.
Losing $1,500 a Month? How Not Appearing in Google AI Costs You
Every month, your restaurant, hotel, or beauty salon could be losing 10 to 30 new customers simply because it doesn't appear in Google's top results, especially in the new AI Overviews. Think about it: if each new customer brings in an average of $50 (between consumption, tip, or service), we're talking about $500 to $1,500 in revenue that goes directly to your competition. This isn't just a lost opportunity; it's a constant erosion of your growth potential. Beyond the money, there's perception: a business that doesn't appear on Google is perceived as less modern, less trustworthy. In the digital age, visibility is synonymous with credibility.
The Real Solution: Appear in Google AI in 3 Simple Steps
Google's AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that directly answer user questions on the search results page. For your business to be chosen to appear in these summaries, your website needs to speak the language of Google's AI. Here's how:
Step 1: Solid Foundations for Google and its AI
Your website must be the foundation of your digital presence. This means it must be incredibly fast on mobile, easy to navigate, and full of content that answers your customers' questions. Google prioritizes user experience, and AI does too.
A key tool here is Schema Markup. This is like an invisible "tag" on your site that tells Google exactly what each piece of information is: where your business is, your hours, the type of food you serve, if you have a menu. It's the clearest way to communicate with AI.
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "http://schema.org",
"@type": "Restaurant",
"name": "Juan's Grill",
"image": "https://www.yourgrill.com/img/logo.webp",
"url": "https://www.yourgrill.com/",
"telephone": "+506-8888-7777",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "Central Ave, In front of the Park",
"addressLocality": "San José",
"addressRegion": "SJ",
"postalCode": "10101",
"addressCountry": "CR"
},
"geo": {
"@type": "GeoCoordinates",
"latitude": "9.9329",
"longitude": "-84.0759"
},
"servesCuisine": ["Grill", "Meats"],
"openingHoursSpecification": [
{
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": ["Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday"],
"opens": "11:30",
"closes": "22:00"
},
{
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": ["Saturday", "Sunday"],
"opens": "12:00",
"closes": "23:00"
}
],
"acceptsReservations": "True"
}
</script>
This code, added in the <head> of your page, tells Google precisely that you are a restaurant, your location, hours, and how to contact you. This is invaluable information for the AI Overview!
Step 2: Impeccable Local Signals
Your Google My Business profile (now known as Google Business Profile) is your digital calling card. Make sure it's 100% complete, with high-quality photos, updated hours, and all your service categories. Consistency is key: your name, address, and phone number (NAP) must be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, and any other online directory like Yelp or TripAdvisor. AI looks for this coherence to verify the authenticity and relevance of your business. If you want to learn more about how Google works, we recommend checking its official search functioning guide.
Step 3: AI-Friendly Content and Direct Answers
AI is designed to answer questions. Think about the most common questions your customers ask: "Do you have vegan options?", "Do you offer home delivery?", "What time do you close on Sundays?". Your website should have clear and concise answers to these questions, ideally in a well-structured FAQ section.
You can even use Schema Markup for your FAQs, which allows Google to extract these questions and answers directly and display them in search results or the AI Overview.
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "What are Juan's Grill opening hours?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "We are open Monday to Friday from 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM."
}
},
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do you accept reservations for large groups?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Yes, we accept reservations for groups of 6 people or more. Please call us at +506-8888-7777 to coordinate."
}
}
]
}
</script>
Implementing this type of markup ensures that your answers are easily identified and used by Google's AI. It's like adding subtitles to your site so Google understands it perfectly! If you need a hand implementing these solutions, check out our web design and AI optimization packages.
Do It Yourself or Hire an Expert?
We understand that as a business owner, your time is gold. You could try to implement these changes yourself. This would involve learning about technical SEO, Schema Markup (which, as you saw, is a bit special code), how Google Search Console works (where Google's AI reports are seen), and how to write AI-optimized content. Honestly, you could spend 40 hours or more researching and learning, and still, the learning curve is steep, and the risk of making mistakes is high. Changes in Google are constant, and staying up-to-date requires dedication.

Real Case: A Restaurant Doubled its Bookings with AI
In San José, a family-run pizzeria called "Pizza Tropical" struggled to compete with larger chains. They had an old website and didn't appear on Google Maps or in the top results. After rebuilding their landing page with us, implementing LocalBusiness Schema, optimizing mobile speed, and adding a well-structured FAQ section, they went from 5 online reservations a week to an average of 12-15. Their visibility in local searches skyrocketed, and Google's AI began recommending "Pizza Tropical" in its summaries for searches like "best artisanal pizzas in San José". It wasn't magic; it was well-applied technology focused on real results. Do you want to join the list of successful businesses? Contact us.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to see results in Google AI Overview?
Results from SEO optimization and appearance in Google AI Overview can vary, but typically, we start seeing the first improvements in local visibility and in Google Search Console reports within 4 to 8 weeks. Google's AI indexing and processing take time, but the solid foundation we build significantly speeds up this process.
Do I need a completely new website for this?
Not necessarily. If you already have a site, we can evaluate if it's possible to optimize it for Google's AI. However, often, a strategic redesign with our modern tools (Next.js, Vercel) offers the best foundation to ensure speed, scalability, and the necessary structure to rank optimally in Google's current ecosystem. We'll give you an honest recommendation after analyzing your situation.
Why not just use Wix or Squarespace?
Platforms like Wix or Squarespace are easy to use, but they often have limitations in speed, customization, and, crucially, in implementing advanced SEO optimizations like custom Schema Markup. A custom-built site with Next.js and Vercel gives you full control over every technical aspect, resulting in superior speed, better SEO, and the ability to integrate specific AI functionalities that generic platforms simply cannot offer. In the end, that extra investment in a professional solution translates into more customers and a real return on investment.

Client (User Browser): The end-user's device, optimized for speed and mobile responsiveness.
Vercel Edge Network: Provides global CDN for fast asset delivery and serverless functions for dynamic content or API routes, ensuring minimal latency. Next.js intelligently determines rendering strategy (SSR/ISR/SSG) for optimal performance and SEO.
Next.js Application: Our primary development framework, using React and TypeScript. It's chosen for its excellent SEO capabilities (SSR, SSG, robust routing), performance, and developer experience. We use it to embed structured data (Schema Markup) directly into the HTML.
Headless CMS: Allows business owners to easily update content (menus, services, FAQs) without needing developer intervention. This content is then consumed by the Next.js app and rendered in an AI-friendly format.
PostgreSQL/MongoDB (Managed DB): Stores dynamic data like online reservations, customer inquiries, or product inventories. This ensures our web apps are fully functional business tools.
Google My Business API: Used for programmatic updates and verification of local business information, ensuring consistent NAP data across the web.
Google Search Console API: Critical for monitoring how Google's AI views the site, tracking impressions and clicks from AI Overviews, and identifying areas for further optimization. This helps us provide data-driven results for our SMB clients.
