Picking a VPN in 2026 usually means wading through paid rankings and affiliate-stuffed "top 10" lists. Here are five sources that actually test before they publish, plus what each one is good for.
- PCMag VPN reviews - long-running lab tests on speed and leak protection across the major providers, a useful sanity check against marketing claims.
- Wirecutter's VPN picks - a small, tightly curated shortlist instead of a ranked top-20, good if you want one solid recommendation without comparing ten options yourself.
- RTINGS VPN reviews - runs its own repeatable speed and streaming-unblock tests with a published methodology, useful when you want the actual numbers rather than just a verdict.
- VPN Adviser - country-specific and use-case guides (streaming, torrenting, gaming, public WiFi) with head-to-head provider comparisons, including a breakdown of the best VPN options for US users in 2026 covering ISP data-selling rules and sports blackouts specifically.
- Restore Privacy - leans harder into the privacy/no-logs angle than streaming, worth checking if jurisdiction and surveillance risk matter more to you than which Netflix library you can reach.
None of these should be your only source. Cross-check at least two before paying for a full year upfront.
