Roemheld Syndrome is a term used to describe a group of symptoms in which digestive problems may be associated with symptoms that feel cardiac, such as palpitations, chest discomfort, or a feeling of breathlessness. Because these symptoms can resemble heart-related problems, getting the right medical evaluation is important.
For international patients looking for medical care, India offers access to experienced gastroenterologists and other specialists. EdhaCare Medical Tourism helps patients coordinate consultations and treatment at leading hospitals in India.
What Is Roemheld Syndrome?
Roemheld Syndrome, sometimes called gastrocardiac syndrome, refers to symptoms that may occur when gastrointestinal problems appear to influence the way a person feels in the chest or heart.
Digestive conditions such as excessive gas, bloating, reflux, or other gastrointestinal disturbances may be associated with symptoms including:
Bloating
Abdominal discomfort
Chest pressure or discomfort
Palpitations
Feeling of a rapid heartbeat
Shortness of breath
Burping
Acid reflux
Feeling unusually full
Importantly, these symptoms can have many possible causes. Chest pain or palpitations should not automatically be assumed to be caused by Roemheld Syndrome.
What Causes Roemheld Syndrome?
The exact mechanisms behind Roemheld Syndrome are not completely established. The symptoms are generally discussed in connection with gastrointestinal disturbances and their possible effects on the autonomic nervous system.
Possible contributing digestive problems may include:
Excessive gas
Abdominal bloating
Acid reflux
Hiatal hernia
Indigestion
Constipation
Other gastrointestinal disorders
Identifying and treating the underlying digestive problem may help reduce associated symptoms in some people.
Symptoms of Roemheld Syndrome
Symptoms can vary significantly from one person to another. Some people mainly experience digestive discomfort, while others notice symptoms involving the chest or heartbeat.
Commonly reported symptoms include:
Digestive Symptoms
Bloating
Gas
Belching
Heartburn
Abdominal discomfort
Indigestion
Chest and Heart-Related Sensations
Palpitations
Chest discomfort
Sensation of a racing heartbeat
Pressure or fullness around the chest
Other Symptoms
Some people may also report:
Breathlessness
Dizziness
Anxiety or uneasiness
Fatigue
Because these symptoms overlap with other medical conditions, proper evaluation is essential.
Is Roemheld Syndrome a Heart Condition?
Roemheld Syndrome is primarily discussed in relation to gastrointestinal problems and possible autonomic effects. However, symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, and shortness of breath can also occur with heart conditions.
For this reason, heart-related causes should be evaluated and ruled out when appropriate rather than assuming that digestive problems are responsible.
If chest pain is severe, sudden, persistent, or accompanied by symptoms such as fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back, seek urgent medical attention.
How Is Roemheld Syndrome Diagnosed?
There is no single test that definitively confirms Roemheld Syndrome. Doctors generally begin by understanding the patient's symptoms and medical history.
Depending on the symptoms, evaluation may involve:
Medical history
Physical examination
Blood tests
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Heart monitoring
Gastrointestinal evaluation
Imaging or endoscopy when clinically indicated
The purpose of testing is often to identify the underlying digestive problem and rule out other possible causes of chest or heart-related symptoms.
Roemheld Syndrome Treatment
Treatment usually focuses on the underlying gastrointestinal problem rather than on Roemheld Syndrome itself.
Depending on the cause, a doctor may recommend:
Managing Acid Reflux
If reflux is contributing to symptoms, treatment may include dietary changes, lifestyle measures, or medications prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Managing Bloating and Gas
Reducing foods that trigger excessive gas and addressing the underlying digestive issue may help some patients.
Treating Constipation
Improving bowel habits through appropriate diet, fluids, physical activity, and medical treatment when needed can help manage digestive symptoms.
Treating an Underlying Gastrointestinal Condition
If conditions such as a hiatal hernia or another digestive disorder are identified, treatment will be based on the specific diagnosis.
Lifestyle Changes That May Help
Lifestyle changes can sometimes support digestive health. Depending on individual needs, a healthcare professional may recommend:
Eating smaller meals
Eating slowly
Identifying foods that trigger symptoms
Staying physically active
Maintaining a healthy weight
Avoiding lying down immediately after eating
Managing stress
Following an appropriate treatment plan
These measures are not a substitute for medical evaluation, particularly when chest or heart-related symptoms are present.
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should consult a healthcare professional if digestive symptoms are frequent, persistent, or interfering with everyday life.
Medical evaluation is especially important when you experience:
Recurrent chest discomfort
Frequent palpitations
Unexplained shortness of breath
Persistent abdominal pain
Difficulty swallowing
Unexplained weight loss
Repeated vomiting
A doctor can determine whether the symptoms are related to a gastrointestinal condition or require evaluation for another cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Roemheld Syndrome curable?
Management depends on the underlying cause. Treating associated gastrointestinal problems and making appropriate lifestyle changes may help reduce symptoms in some patients.
Can gas cause heart palpitations?
Digestive symptoms such as bloating and gas can sometimes be associated with sensations of palpitations. However, palpitations can also have many other causes, so persistent or new symptoms should be medically evaluated.
Can acid reflux cause chest discomfort?
Yes, acid reflux can cause a burning or uncomfortable sensation in the chest. However, chest pain should not automatically be attributed to reflux, particularly when symptoms are new or severe.
Which doctor treats Roemheld Syndrome?
A gastroenterologist may evaluate the digestive component of symptoms. If palpitations or chest symptoms are present, a cardiologist may also be involved depending on the clinical situation.
