Best VPN for Remote Desktop: 7 Secure Options

Originally published at toolstackscout.com/vpn-privacy/best-vpn-for-remote-desktop/

Remote Desktop can be useful for reaching work PCs, office servers, home labs, and client machines, but exposing RDP directly to internet is risky. A VPN adds a private encrypted path first, so Remote Desktop is not left as an open front door.

Quick answer: the best vpn for remote desktop depends on whether you need low-latency personal access, simple work-from-home security, team-friendly controls, or privacy-first routing. NordVPN is strongest for most individual users who want speed and usability. ExpressVPN fits travelers and mixed-device workflows. Surfshark fits households and budget-conscious users. Proton VPN fits privacy-first users. Mullvad fits technical users who want minimal account friction. CyberGhost fits beginners. Private Internet Access fits users who want more hands-on settings.

Best VPNs for Remote Desktop at Glance

Remote Desktop does not need maximum download speed as much as it needs steady latency, reliable reconnects, and clean routing to the target machine. A fast VPN that drops sessions during screen sharing or file access is worse than a slightly slower VPN that stays connected.

Use this table as a fast shortlist. Exact features, plan names, and availability can change, so treat this as a workflow fit comparison rather than a claim about fixed packages.

Practical takeaway: pick NordVPN if you want the safest default choice for personal Remote Desktop. Pick ExpressVPN if devices and travel matter most. Pick Surfshark if budget and device coverage matter most. Pick Proton VPN or Mullvad if privacy posture matters more than hand-holding.

What Makes a VPN Good for Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop feels different from streaming or browsing. Small delays show up as cursor lag, keyboard lag, frozen windows, and failed reconnects. For RDP, the best VPN choice starts with connection quality, not marketing claims.

Low latency and stable connections

Latency matters because Remote Desktop sends small interaction updates back and forth. A nearby VPN server usually works better than a faraway server, even if a distant server has strong download speed. For office access, connect to a server closest to office or target PC location, not necessarily closest to you.

Secure protocols

Look for support for modern protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2. WireGuard-style protocols often feel responsive. OpenVPN can be useful where compatibility and firewall traversal matter. IKEv2 can be practical on mobile devices that switch networks.

Split tunneling and local network access

Split tunneling can let Remote Desktop use VPN while other apps use normal internet, or vice versa depending on setup. Local network access matters when you need printers, NAS devices, or another machine on the same LAN while VPN is active. These settings differ by app and OS, so verify before relying on them.

Windows, macOS, router, and mobile apps

Many Remote Desktop users connect from Windows laptops, MacBooks, iPads, phones, or router-protected networks. VPN must support the device you connect from and, if needed, the router where the target machine sits. Router setup can protect machines that cannot run a VPN app directly.

Decision rule: for daily RDP, choose low latency, reconnect behavior, and device support before extra privacy features. For sensitive work, add stronger privacy controls and tighter account settings after connection basics are solid.

7 Best VPNs for Remote Desktop

1. NordVPN

NordVPN is the best fit for most people who want secure Remote Desktop without building a custom network stack. It has broad app support, modern protocol options, and enough usability for non-technical users who still need serious security controls.

For Remote Desktop, NordVPN makes most sense when one person or small group needs to reach a desktop from home, hotel Wi-Fi, coworking spaces, or client sites. It is also a good fit when the user wants clear app controls instead of manual OpenVPN configuration.

• Best for: everyday RDP users who want strong default balance.

• Remote Desktop fit: low-friction apps, secure tunneling, and practical speed for interactive sessions.

• Check first: dedicated IP, business management, device limits, and local network behavior if those matter.

Choose NordVPN if: you want one VPN recommendation that is easy to deploy for personal or lightweight work Remote Desktop use.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN fits users who move between networks and devices. Travelers, consultants, and remote workers often need Remote Desktop from hotel Wi-Fi, airport networks, mobile hotspots, and home routers. ExpressVPN’s main value is clean setup across common platforms.

For RDP, this matters because connection mistakes waste time. If you switch between Windows, macOS, mobile, and router coverage, a simpler app experience can be worth more than deeply customizable settings.

• Best for: travelers and mixed-device remote access.

• Remote Desktop fit: simple setup, broad platform support, and router-friendly positioning.

• Check first: price, dedicated IP needs, and specific workplace requirements.

Choose ExpressVPN if: you want Remote Desktop to work across changing networks with minimal setup friction.

Surfshark fits users who need VPN coverage across many personal devices or family devices while still protecting Remote Desktop sessions. It is a strong budget-conscious candidate if you connect from multiple laptops, phones, and tablets.

For Remote Desktop, Surfshark works best when you want general VPN protection plus occasional or regular RDP access. It may be less ideal if your main need is centralized business administration rather than personal-device coverage.

• Best for: budget-conscious users and multi-device households.

• Remote Desktop fit: convenient device coverage and modern VPN features.

• Check first: latency to servers near target PC and any account terms for business use.

Choose Surfshark if: you want affordable VPN coverage across many devices and your Remote Desktop use is personal or light professional access.

4. Proton VPN

Proton VPN fits privacy-first users who care about provider reputation, security posture, and careful control over where traffic goes. It is especially relevant for journalists, researchers, consultants, and privacy-conscious remote workers.

For Remote Desktop, Proton VPN is best when secure access is part of a broader privacy workflow. However, avoid routing through extra privacy layers unless you need them, because extra distance and routing complexity can increase latency.

• Best for: privacy-first professionals and sensitive remote work.

• Remote Desktop fit: strong security orientation and reliable mainstream app coverage.

• Check first: whether advanced privacy features add delay to your RDP sessions.

Choose Proton VPN if: privacy stance matters as much as Remote Desktop convenience.

5. Mullvad

Mullvad fits technical users who prefer minimal account exposure and a direct privacy-first model. It is not built around polished business dashboards, but it appeals to users who know what they need and prefer fewer identity-linked account steps.

For Remote Desktop, Mullvad works best for individual technical users, developers, security-aware freelancers, and home lab users. It may not be the best first pick for a small business owner who wants guided team setup and admin controls.

• Best for: technical users, developers, and privacy-focused home labs.

• Remote Desktop fit: no-nonsense VPN use with strong privacy appeal.

• Check first: business support, router setup comfort, and preferred protocol behavior.

Choose Mullvad if: you are comfortable configuring your own Remote Desktop workflow and value privacy-minimal account design.

6. CyberGhost

CyberGhost fits beginners who want a friendly VPN app for basic protection before using Remote Desktop. It is best for users who do not want to tune protocols, routing rules, or advanced settings.

For RDP, CyberGhost can work well when the workflow is simple: connect VPN, connect to desktop, finish task, disconnect. It is less compelling if you need business policy controls, fixed routing, or detailed troubleshooting options.

• Best for: beginners and casual remote access users.

• Remote Desktop fit: easy app-based VPN protection for common devices.

• Check first: advanced routing needs, router support, and work account restrictions.

Choose CyberGhost if: you want simple VPN protection for occasional Remote Desktop sessions and do not need deep controls.

7. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access fits hands-on users who want settings they can tune. That can help if you need to test protocol choices, adjust connection behavior, or work around network restrictions.

For Remote Desktop, configurable VPN behavior can be valuable. It can also create more room for misconfiguration. If you want plug-and-play simplicity, choose a simpler option. If you like testing settings to improve stability, PIA belongs on shortlist.

• Best for: users who want more control over VPN behavior.

• Remote Desktop fit: configurable app settings and broad personal VPN use.

• Check first: which settings are available on your OS and whether complexity is worth it.

Choose Private Internet Access if: you want more tuning control and are comfortable testing settings for your Remote Desktop path.

Best VPN for Remote Desktop by Use Case

NordVPN is the best default for work-from-home users who need secure access from one or two regular locations. It balances speed, security, and setup simplicity without forcing you into technical decisions immediately.

Best for small business remote access: ExpressVPN or NordVPN

Small businesses should first decide whether they need consumer VPN protection or managed business remote access. For simple owner-led access, NordVPN or ExpressVPN can be practical. For multiple employees, admins should check account controls, policies, support expectations, and whether dedicated remote access tooling is better than consumer VPN.

Best for privacy-first users: Proton VPN or Mullvad

Proton VPN fits users who want polished privacy-forward apps. Mullvad fits users who prefer minimal account design and are comfortable with fewer guided business features. For sensitive work, also harden Remote Desktop itself with strong passwords, multi-factor protections where available, and restricted user permissions.

Best budget pick: Surfshark

Surfshark fits users who want broad device coverage and lower overall cost pressure. It is strongest when several devices need VPN protection and Remote Desktop is one of several daily uses.

Use-case decision rule: choose NordVPN for best all-around RDP fit, ExpressVPN for travel and device mix, Surfshark for value, Proton VPN for privacy-first polish, Mullvad for technical privacy control, CyberGhost for beginner simplicity, and Private Internet Access for tunable settings.

How VPN Protects Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop Protocol lets you control another computer over a network. If RDP is exposed directly to the internet, attackers can find it, attempt credential attacks, exploit weak configuration, or abuse old services. VPN reduces exposure by requiring a VPN connection before the RDP session is reachable.

VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and VPN endpoint. In office or router-level setups, that tunnel can place you inside a trusted network path before you connect to Remote Desktop. This does not make weak passwords safe, but it reduces public attack surface.

VPN is usually safer than basic port forwarding because port forwarding can publish RDP to the internet. A better setup blocks direct RDP exposure and allows access only through VPN or another secure remote access gateway.

How to Set Up VPN for Remote Desktop

• Choose VPN based on target location. If the office PC is in Chicago, test VPN servers near Chicago or near the office network path. Do not choose distant servers unless privacy or access needs require them.

• Install VPN on client device. Install the app on the laptop, desktop, tablet, or phone used to start the Remote Desktop session.

• Enable secure protocol. Start with WireGuard or the provider’s modern default protocol. Try OpenVPN or IKEv2 if the network blocks connection or the session behaves poorly.

• Connect to VPN before RDP. Confirm VPN connection is active before launching the Remote Desktop client.

• Use private address when required. In office VPN setups, connect to the internal hostname or private IP if configured that way.

• Keep RDP closed to public internet. Avoid exposing port 3389 unless a qualified admin has a secure reason and compensating controls.

• Test from outside network. Test from a mobile hotspot or external Wi-Fi so you know the setup works before urgent access is needed.

• Consider router-level VPN. Use router VPN when the target device cannot run a VPN app or when several devices need a protected network path.

For small teams, document exact steps: which server to connect to, which Remote Desktop address to use, who can access which machine, and what to do if VPN fails. This prevents support tickets caused by users guessing settings.

Common Problems and Fixes

Remote Desktop slow over VPN

Slow RDP usually means high latency, overloaded route, weak Wi-Fi, or unnecessary routing distance. Connect to a server closer to the target machine, switch VPN protocol, use wired connection if possible, and reduce Remote Desktop visual effects.

Cannot reach office PC after connecting VPN

This often means wrong VPN server, wrong address, firewall rule, DNS issue, or missing local network permission. Confirm the target PC is awake, Remote Desktop is enabled, the firewall allows RDP from VPN subnet, and you are using the correct internal hostname or IP.

VPN disconnects during Remote Desktop session

Disconnects can come from unstable Wi-Fi, mobile network changes, aggressive sleep settings, or protocol mismatch. Disable sleep during sessions, try another protocol, test another VPN server, and avoid switching networks mid-session.

Local printer or file share disappears

VPN may block local network access or route all traffic through the tunnel. Check local network sharing setting, split tunneling option, and Remote Desktop resource redirection settings.

Remote Desktop works at home but not in hotel or office Wi-Fi

Some networks block VPN protocols or RDP traffic. Try TCP-based OpenVPN if available, switch ports inside the VPN app if supported, or use a mobile hotspot as backup.

Troubleshooting rule: change one variable at a time. Test server location, protocol, network, then Remote Desktop settings. Random changes make problem harder to isolate.

How to Choose the Right VPN for Remote Desktop

1. Start with security basics

Use strong encryption, trusted protocols, kill switch where useful, and clear app settings. VPN cannot fix weak Remote Desktop passwords or outdated machines, so harden both VPN and RDP.

2. Test latency near target location

Do not rely only on broad speed reputation. Test a server close to the target PC or office. RDP depends on responsiveness more than large downloads.

3. Check device and router support

Make sure the VPN works on the device you use to connect and on the router if network-level setup is required. Some features vary by OS, especially split tunneling and local network access.

4. Decide whether you need dedicated IP

Some workflows use fixed IP allowlists. If that matters, check whether the VPN offers dedicated IP or static IP options and whether those options fit your security model.

5. Separate personal VPN from business remote access needs

Consumer VPN can protect individual sessions, but small teams may need admin controls, identity management, auditability, and device policy. If several users need access to business machines, compare VPN with business remote access options before committing.

Final buying rule: choose the VPN that gives stable RDP sessions first, then add privacy features, device coverage, and team controls. A feature-rich VPN that adds lag to every click is the wrong fit.

FAQ About VPNs for Remote Desktop

Do you need VPN for Remote Desktop?

You should use VPN or another secure remote access layer if connecting to Remote Desktop over the internet. Directly exposing RDP is risky. VPN helps keep Remote Desktop reachable only after a secure connection.

Will VPN slow down Remote Desktop?

VPN can slow Remote Desktop if the server is far away, the protocol is inefficient on your network, or the connection is unstable. A good setup can still feel responsive when the VPN server is near the target location and network quality is solid.
