If you're learning to code in Nigeria today, your classroom probably isn't just a classroom.
It might be: Google Search, YouTube, Documentation, Stack Overflow, GitHub, Online communities, AI assistants, A local tech hub
And, of course, your own laptop.
The barrier to finding information has never been lower.
But there's an important question:
Does easier access to information actually make us better developers?
Not automatically.
AI is changing how beginners learn
A beginner stuck on a JavaScript error can ask an AI assistant for an explanation.
Someone learning Python can request a simpler explanation of a concept.
A developer can ask for debugging suggestions.
A student can generate practice exercises.
This makes AI incredibly useful as a learning companion.
But there is a major difference between:
"Give me the answer."
and
"Help me understand why my approach isn't working."
The second question encourages learning.
Don't outsource your brain
One of the biggest risks of AI-assisted learning is becoming dependent on generated solutions.
If AI writes every function, explains every error and completes every project, you may finish the project without actually developing the ability to build independently.
A better workflow is:
Try → Search → Ask AI → Understand → Implement → Test → Refactor
The human remains responsible for the learning.
Where tech hubs fit in
This doesn't mean AI makes physical training unnecessary.
Quite the opposite.
A structured learning environment can provide what an AI assistant cannot fully replace:
mentorship, accountability, community and real-world context.
Technology hubs such as TEKHUB can give learners a structured environment for developing practical skills, working on projects and connecting with other people building careers in technology.
AI and Google then become additional tools in the learner's toolkit.
The real advantage is the combination
A Nigerian beginner doesn't have to choose between formal training and self-learning.
Use both.
Learn the fundamentals with guidance.
Search when you're stuck.
Ask AI questions.
Read the documentation.
Build projects.
Break things.
Debug them.
Build again.
That's how information becomes engineering ability.
Final thought:
AI isn't necessarily making learning unnecessary.
It's making continuous learning easier.
The developers who benefit most may not be the ones who ask AI to do everything for them.
They'll be the ones who know how to use AI to learn faster while still thinking for themselves.
