Renting a car in Florida is common when traveling, taking a vacation, or while your personal vehicle is being repaired. But one important question comes up: Does auto insurance cover rental cars in Florida?
In many situations, your existing Florida auto insurance may provide certain coverage for a rental car, but the details depend on your policy, coverage limits, and rental agreement.
Does Your Auto Insurance Cover a Rental Car?
If your personal auto insurance policy includes applicable liability, collision, or comprehensive coverage, some of that protection may extend to a rental vehicle. However, coverage is not automatically the same for every policy or rental situation.
Before renting a vehicle, it is important to review your policy and understand what protection applies, including your deductible and coverage limits.
What About Liability Coverage?
Liability coverage may help protect you if you are responsible for covered injuries or property damage while driving the rental car.
Having adequate liability coverage is particularly important because an accident can result in significant financial expenses.
An insurance professional can help you understand whether your current Orlando auto insurance provides appropriate liability protection when renting a vehicle.
Do You Need Rental Car Insurance?
Rental companies may offer additional protection, such as a collision damage waiver or other coverage options. Whether you need additional protection depends on your existing insurance policy, the rental agreement, and your individual circumstances.
Instead of assuming you are fully covered, review your policy before picking up the rental vehicle.
What Is Rental Reimbursement Coverage?
Rental reimbursement is different from coverage for a rental car.
If your personal vehicle is damaged in a covered accident, rental reimbursement coverage may help pay eligible rental expenses while your vehicle is being repaired, subject to the policy's limits and conditions.
