Scan a Document with Your Phone Camera (Free, No Upload)

Turn a crooked photo of a receipt, contract or printed page into a clean, flat scan — straighten the perspective, crop it tight, boost the contrast. All in your browser, nothing ever uploaded.

I scan a lot of paperwork — receipts, signed contracts, printed pages I need to keep — and my "scanner" is a phone camera. The problem: every photo comes out crooked, shadowed, and tilted like the document is sliding off the table. The classic fix is a scanner app, but almost every one I tried wants an account, uploads my files somewhere, and locks the clean export behind a paid tier. So I built a document scanner in the browser that does it locally — the photo never leaves your device.

1. Why "free" scanner apps aren't actually free

The pattern is almost universal: upload → process → paywall.

• Upload-first: your contract, ID or receipt is copied to a server you don't control.
• Watermark until you pay: the clean, high-res export is locked behind a subscription.
• Signup wall: accounts and email verification before you've scanned a single page.

None of that is necessary. Straightening a perspective, cropping and boosting contrast is simple image math that a phone or laptop can run locally in milliseconds.

2. What it does, step by step

Take a photo of the document (flat, good light, no glare) and drop it in the free document scanner:

1. Auto-detect the document edges — the page gets found in the photo automatically.
2. Fix the perspective — the page is warped flat and square, like it was placed on scanner glass.
3. Crop to the page — table edges and background removed.
4. Enhance — contrast is boosted so text reads clean and shadows fade.
5. Export — save a clean PNG to email, attach or print.

All of it runs on your device. A 12 MP photo is processed instantly — no upload, no queue, no account.

3. The privacy angle (and what shoots best)

There's a real reason to care where your scans go: documents you photograph are the most sensitive files you own — IDs, contracts, invoices. Data-protection authorities have been increasingly explicit that files stored on someone else's server are exposed to data collection, ad profiling, and deletion decisions made by companies, not by you. Processing a scan locally means nothing to store, nothing to train on, and nothing to delete later.

For the best scan with any phone:

• Lay the document flat and shoot from straight above (not at an angle).
• Use even light — avoid shadows and glare.
• More light beats more sharpening every time.
