The Problem: Testing Across Regions Is Hard
If you're a developer, you've probably faced this situation:
You build a web app. It works perfectly on your local machine. You deploy it. Users in the US see one thing. Users in the UK see something else. And you have no idea why.
The traditional solution? Use a VPN. Connect to a US server. Test. Disconnect. Connect to a UK server. Test. Disconnect. Repeat.
That process is:
- Time-consuming
- Error-prone
- Not scalable
What if you could test from multiple regions at the same time, in the same browser window?
The Solution: Per-Tab IP Routing
PureVPN's IP Per Tab is a Chrome extension that lets you assign a unique residential IP address to each individual browser tab.
Here's how it works:
| Tab | IP Assignment | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Tab 1 | Direct (Your Real IP) | Control: see what users actually see |
| Tab 2 | US Residential IP | Test US-specific content and pricing |
| Tab 3 | UK Residential IP | Test UK-specific content and pricing |
One browser. Unlimited tabs. Unique IPs per tab.
Each tab you open gets its own unique residential IP address. Open 10 tabs? You get 10 unique US or UK IPs. Open 30 tabs? You get 30 unique IPs. There's no fixed limit; every tab is independent and can be assigned to a different location.
Quick Start: Install the extension → Login → Select a country → Assign to a tab. That's it. 3-4 seconds and you're connected.
How It Works
Step 1: Install and Login
- Go to the Chrome Web Store
- Search for "IP Per Tab by PureVPN"
- Click Add to Chrome
- Login with your credentials
Note: The extension is free to install. Residential IP usage requires a connected PureVPN Residential Proxy plan. Once installed, the pricing page will open automatically. Choose a plan, complete the purchase and return to the extension. You'll then be able to assign IPs to any tab.
The extension's landing page and login prompt: one tab, one IP, with US and UK ready to go out of the box.
Step 2: Assign IPs to Tabs
Once logged in, the extension dashboard lets you assign IPs per tab:
- Select "United States" for a tab → US residential IP
- Select "United Kingdom" for a tab → UK residential IP
- Select "Direct" for a tab → Your real IP
Note: The extension doesn't limit you to a fixed number of IPs. Each tab you open gets its own unique residential IP address.
10 tabs → 10 unique US or UK IPs
30 tabs → 30 unique US or UK IPs
Every tab is independent and can be assigned to a different location; this is the core USP of unlimited tabs, unlimited unique IPs, all from one browser.
Three different tabs showing unique IP addresses: India (Direct), UK, and US with matching DNS servers for each location. No crossover or leak detected.
Domain Rules: The extension also includes a Domain Rule Engine that assigns a proxy directly to the tab that triggers a match. Only the tab that navigated to the matching domain gets the new assignment. Other open tabs keep whatever proxy or direct connection they already had.
Domain Rules in action assign specific domains to always open with a specific IP. Here amazon.com and bbc.co.uk are set to route through their assigned countries.
Assignments persist and can be changed per domain: here github.com has shifted to a US IP and npmjs.com to a UK IP, independent of each other.
Use Cases That Actually Matter
Let me show you how this works in practice.
1. Web Scraping Without Getting Blocked
Web scraping is a common use case, but datacenter IPs are blocked quickly. With a residential proxy, it's much harder for websites to detect and block scraping activities. This extension's per-tab assignment allows you to run multiple scraping tasks in parallel, each with its own IP, reducing the risk of rate limiting.
2. QA Testing: Catch Issues Before Users Do
QA engineers can simulate real user experiences across locations without managing complex proxy setups. This means catching location-specific bugs before they reach production, such as region-specific pricing, localization errors, and regional content discrepancies.
3. SEO & Market Research
Per-tab IP routing is also useful for researching search results in different countries and tracking competitors' pricing without affecting your own browsing session. The ability to switch IPs per tab makes it easier to test how your site appears to international users.
DNS Leak Protection
A common concern with proxy extensions is DNS leaks, where your real IP gets exposed through DNS requests.
PureVPN's IP Per Tab extension includes built-in DNS leak protection. DNS leaks occur when browser DNS requests travel outside the proxy tunnel, exposing the user's real IP and location despite an active proxy connection. The extension prevents this by routing all DNS requests through the residential proxy tunnel.
In addition to DNS leak protection, the extension also includes a built-in WebRTC leak protection toggle. WebRTC leaks can expose your real IP even when using a proxy, so this toggle ensures your real IP stays hidden during WebRTC-based communication.
I tested this using ipleak.net, checking both the IP address and the DNS servers being used in each tab. The test showed only the assigned country's DNS servers, with no real IP leak detected.
Performance & Speed
During testing, connection times were consistently 3-4 seconds, fast enough for real-time testing workflows.
Additional features verified:
- Tab assignments are saved: close and reopen Chrome, and your assignments persist
- Domain Rules: set specific websites to always open with a specific IP
- DNS leak protection: no real IP leaks detected
- No browsing data collected: PureVPN does not collect any data through this extension
What Makes It Different
| Traditional VPN | Proxy Switchers | IP Per Tab |
|---|---|---|
| Changes IP for entire browser | Changes proxy for the browser or selected tabs | Changes IP per tab |
| Manual connect/disconnect | Requires manual proxy configuration | One-click per tab |
| Datacenter IPs (often blocked) | Depends on the proxy provider | Residential IPs (rarely blocked) |
| Can't test multiple regions at once | Can switch between proxies, but requires setup | Test US + UK + Direct simultaneously |
| Slower connection | Performance depends on proxy provider | Fast connection with 3-4 second switching |
| Best for general privacy | Best for users who already have proxies | Best for multi-region testing, scraping & QA |
What Works Well
| Feature | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| One-click per tab | No manual config, no setup, just select and go |
| Saved assignments | Close Chrome, reopen, and your tab settings persist |
| Domain Rules | Set specific websites to always open with a specific IP |
| 3-4 second connect | Fast enough for real-time testing |
| Residential IPs | Harder to block than datacenter proxies |
Limitations
| Limitation | Impact |
|---|---|
| Only US and UK IPs | Can't test other regions yet |
| No city-level selection | Can't test specific cities |
| Bandwidth limits | Not ideal for large downloads |
Final Verdict
IP Per Tab solves a real problem for developers who need to test web apps across multiple regions. It's not a full VPN. It's a developer tool that lets you test, debug, and verify your applications from multiple geographic locations, all from a single browser window.
Who is this for?
- Developers testing web apps
- QA engineers doing region-specific testing
- SEO professionals doing geo-specific research
- Anyone who needs to see what users in different countries see
The bottom line: If you test web apps across regions, this is worth having in your toolkit.
Try It Yourself
Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store and test your web apps from multiple locations, without leaving your browser.
