CS2's server architecture is different from CS:GO. Understanding what the client actually receives helps you stop chasing settings that don't matter.
CS2 tick architecture
CS2 moved from a traditional tick rate model to a sub-tick system where input events are timestamped at the moment they happen, not at the next server tick. In theory, this makes 64-tick servers behave more like 128-tick for input registration.
What this means for client settings
Legacy CS:GO launch options like +cl_updaterate 128 and +cl_cmdrate 128 don't apply the same way. CS2's sub-tick system handles update rates differently.
+fps_max 0 is still relevant — uncapping FPS lets the game run as fast as possible. Higher FPS = more input samples per second, which matters for sub-tick.
Network settings that still matter
Rate limiting: rate 786432 (or higher with fast internet) — sets maximum download rate from server.
+rate 786432
These go in CS2 launch options (right-click game in Steam → Properties → Launch Options).
Windows network stack
Sub-tick doesn't eliminate the value of network stack optimization. Your position updates still travel over TCP/UDP, and Nagle's algorithm still adds latency to your outgoing packets.
Nagle off + NIC interrupt moderation off remains relevant for reducing the network component of your total latency.
Client FPS and sub-tick
Higher client FPS means more precise input timestamps in the sub-tick system. This is why "fps_max 0" matters more in CS2 than raw tick rate discussions.
