Top Forex Pairs to Trade in 2026: 7 Best Currency Pairs

Choosing the right currency pair can make Forex trading easier to analyze, execute and manage. In 2026, the most popular Forex pairs for retail traders continue to include EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD and NZD/USD.

These pairs combine strong liquidity, active trading sessions and broad participation from institutional and retail traders.

However, there is no single Forex pair that is guaranteed to be the “most profitable.” The best pair for you depends on your trading strategy, preferred trading hours, tolerance for volatility, experience level and risk-management approach.

According to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), global foreign exchange turnover reached approximately $9.6 trillion per day in April 2025, while the US dollar was involved in roughly 89% of all FX transactions.

What Are the Best Forex Pairs to Trade in 2026?

For most retail traders, the following seven currency pairs are worth watching:

Understanding Forex liquidity is also important. Liquidity can affect spreads, execution quality and how easily a position can be opened or closed.

1. EUR/USD — Best Overall Forex Pair

EUR/USD is widely considered one of the most accessible Forex pairs for both beginners and experienced traders. It combines deep liquidity with significant participation from banks, institutions and retail traders.

The pair represents the euro against the US dollar and is influenced by a wide range of economic and geopolitical factors, including:

• Federal Reserve monetary policy
• European Central Bank decisions
• US and eurozone inflation
• Employment data
• Economic growth
• Geopolitical developments

EUR/USD is particularly active during the overlap between the European and US trading sessions. Its high liquidity can also contribute to competitive spreads and relatively efficient execution.

For traders who use technical analysis or daily Forex signals, EUR/USD is often a practical market to monitor because of its high trading activity.

Best for: Beginners, scalpers, day traders and technical traders.

2. USD/JPY — Best for Liquidity and Macro Trading

USD/JPY combines the US dollar with the Japanese yen, two of the most actively traded currencies in the global FX market.

The yen accounted for approximately 16.8% of global FX turnover in April 2025, according to the BIS, making it the third-most traded currency after the US dollar and euro.

USD/JPY is particularly sensitive to interest rates and monetary-policy expectations. Key drivers include:

• Federal Reserve policy
• Bank of Japan policy
• US and Japanese bond yields
• Interest-rate differentials
• Global risk sentiment
• Economic data from the US and Japan

Changes in expectations surrounding monetary policy can create sustained trends, making USD/JPY attractive to both short-term and swing traders.

Best for: Macro traders, trend traders, day traders and traders active during Asian or US sessions.

3. GBP/USD — Best Forex Pair for Volatility

Known as “Cable,” GBP/USD is generally more volatile than EUR/USD. Its larger intraday price movements can create opportunities for active traders, but they can also increase risk.

The pair is influenced by factors such as:

• Bank of England interest-rate decisions
• Federal Reserve policy
• UK inflation
• UK GDP
• US economic data
• Political and economic developments

Sterling accounted for approximately 10.2% of global FX turnover in the BIS's latest survey.

Because GBP/USD can move quickly around major economic announcements, traders should pay particular attention to position sizing, stop-loss placement and leverage.

Best for: Day traders, breakout traders and experienced traders comfortable with higher volatility.

4. USD/CHF — A Major Pair for Defensive and Macro Trading

USD/CHF represents the US dollar against the Swiss franc and is another major currency pair with substantial global participation.

The Swiss franc is often viewed as a defensive currency during periods of market uncertainty. USD/CHF can therefore be influenced by changes in global risk sentiment as well as monetary policy from the Federal Reserve and Swiss National Bank.

The Swiss franc's share of global FX activity increased to approximately 6.4% in 2025, according to the BIS.

This makes USD/CHF an interesting alternative for traders who want to diversify beyond EUR/USD and USD/JPY.

Best for: Technical traders, macro traders and traders monitoring global risk sentiment.

5. AUD/USD — Best Commodity-Linked Currency Pair

AUD/USD pairs the Australian dollar with the US dollar and is one of the most widely followed commodity-sensitive currency pairs.

Australia has significant exposure to commodities and trade with Asian economies, particularly China. As a result, AUD/USD can react to:

• Commodity prices
• Chinese economic data
• Reserve Bank of Australia decisions
• Federal Reserve policy
• Global risk appetite
• Changes in international trade

AUD/USD can provide a useful balance between liquidity and volatility, making it attractive to traders looking for opportunities during Asian and broader global trading sessions.

Best for: Commodity traders, swing traders and traders active during Asian sessions.

6. USD/CAD — Best for Oil and Fundamental Trading

USD/CAD combines the US dollar with the Canadian dollar and is closely watched by traders interested in commodities and North American economic data.

Canada is a major energy exporter, which means movements in crude oil prices can influence the Canadian dollar. However, the relationship between oil and CAD is not always consistent and should not be treated as a standalone trading signal.

Important USD/CAD drivers include:

• Crude oil prices
• Bank of Canada monetary policy
• Federal Reserve decisions
• US and Canadian employment data
• Inflation
• Economic growth
• Interest-rate expectations

Traders who combine fundamental analysis with technical analysis often keep USD/CAD on their watchlist.

Best for: Fundamental traders, oil-market followers and swing traders.

7. NZD/USD — A Useful Alternative Major Pair

NZD/USD, commonly known as the “Kiwi,” pairs the New Zealand dollar with the US dollar.

Although its trading volume is lower than that of EUR/USD and USD/JPY, NZD/USD remains an established major currency pair with active global participation.

The pair can be influenced by:

• Reserve Bank of New Zealand monetary policy
• Federal Reserve decisions
• Commodity prices
• Chinese economic conditions
• Global risk sentiment
• Interest-rate expectations

NZD/USD can be useful for traders looking to diversify their Forex watchlist while staying within major currency markets.

Best for: Swing traders and traders comfortable with moderate volatility.

What Is the Most Traded Forex Pair in 2026?

EUR/USD remains one of the world's most important and actively traded currency pairs. However, recent institutional data has highlighted some changes in the FX market.

According to the BIS, the top 10 most traded currency pairs in April 2025 all included the US dollar. Trading in USD/CNY also increased significantly, with USD/CNY moving ahead of USD/GBP to become the third-most traded currency pair, behind USD/EUR and USD/JPY.

However, trading volume alone does not determine whether a currency pair is suitable for a retail trader.

Spreads, volatility, broker conditions, execution, available trading hours and your individual strategy can be more important than overall market turnover.

Which Forex Pair Is Best for Beginners?

For many new traders, EUR/USD is one of the best currency pairs to start with because of its high liquidity, extensive market coverage and generally competitive trading costs.

USD/JPY can also be worth considering.

including:

• Position sizing
• Leverage
• Stop-loss orders
• Risk-to-reward ratios
• Trading sessions
• Economic news
• Transaction costs

Learning how the Forex market works is more important than immediately searching for the pair with the biggest price movements.

Which Forex Pair Is the Most Profitable?

There is no Forex pair that is consistently the most profitable.

A trader's profitability depends on factors such as:

• Trading strategy
• Market conditions
• Entry and exit timing
• Risk management
• Transaction costs
• Execution quality
• Position sizing

A highly volatile pair may provide larger potential price movements, but that also means losses can increase more quickly.

Instead of asking which currency pair is guaranteed to make the most money, traders should ask:

“Which currency pair best matches my strategy and risk tolerance?”

How to Choose the Best Forex Pair to Trade

Before selecting a currency pair, consider these five factors:

1. Liquidity

Highly liquid currency pairs generally have more market participation and can offer smoother execution and competitive spreads.

2. Spread and Trading Costs

The spread can have a significant impact on profitability, particularly for scalpers and high-frequency traders. Lower trading costs can make a meaningful difference over many trades.

3. Volatility

Volatility creates trading opportunities, but it also increases risk. Choose a pair whose typical price movements are appropriate for your strategy and account size.

4. Trading Session

Different currency pairs tend to be most active during different market sessions. Choose pairs that are active during the hours when you are available to trade.

5. Trading Strategy

Your strategy should influence your currency-pair selection. Scalpers, day traders, breakout traders and swing traders may all prefer different market conditions.

Major Forex Pairs vs. Minor and Exotic Pairs

Forex pairs are commonly divided into three broad categories: major pairs, minor pairs and exotic pairs.

Major Currency Pairs

Major pairs include the US dollar and another highly traded currency. Examples include:

• EUR/USD
• USD/JPY
• GBP/USD
• USD/CHF
• AUD/USD
• USD/CAD
• NZD/USD

These pairs generally offer strong liquidity and are often easier for beginners to follow.

Minor Currency Pairs

Minor pairs combine major currencies without the US dollar. Examples include:

• EUR/GBP
• EUR/JPY
• GBP/JPY

They can provide different trading opportunities but may have different spreads and liquidity characteristics compared with the major pairs.

Exotic Currency Pairs

Exotic pairs combine a major currency with a less heavily traded currency.

They can offer higher volatility, but traders may also encounter wider spreads, lower liquidity and greater execution risk.

For most beginners, major currency pairs are usually a more straightforward place to start. If you're still learning the market, our Forex trading guide can provide a broader overview of how currency trading works.

Final Thoughts: Which Forex Pair Should You Trade in 2026?

The best Forex pairs to trade in 2026 are not necessarily the pairs with the biggest price movements. For many traders, EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD and NZD/USD offer a useful combination of liquidity, market participation and accessibility.

EUR/USD may be particularly suitable for beginners and traders who prioritize liquidity. GBP/USD can appeal to experienced traders looking for greater volatility, while USD/JPY may suit traders who focus on interest rates and macroeconomic trends.

Ultimately, choosing a currency pair is only one part of successful Forex trading. A well-defined strategy, appropriate position sizing, disciplined risk management and realistic expectations are far more important than finding a supposedly “winning” pair.

Forex trading involves substantial risk, and no currency pair, trading strategy or Forex signal can guarantee profits.
