What does a game console look like when the design goal is "as cheap as physically possible"?
Arduboy's answer is the CHGame Rev0, a $39 development kit that ships as a bare PCB with a color screen bolted to it. No case, no shrink-wrap, no finished product. You get the board, and you get the silkscreen labels that tell you exactly which pad does what. For a student who wants to learn embedded graphics without frying a Raspberry Pi 5 that costs eight times as much, that trade is a good one.
What is actually on the board?
The brain is a CH32X035G8U6, a 32-bit RISC-V microcontroller clocked at 48 MHz with 64 KB of flash and 20 KB of RAM. That is a tight budget. You are not porting Doom to it. You are writing tile-based games where every sprite byte is accounted for, which is exactly the constraint that teaches people how memory actually works.
Output goes to a 1.44-inch ST7735 LCD running 128 by 128 pixels at 16-bit color. Input is eight tactile buttons. Sound comes from a piezo, there is a user-controllable LED, a microSD slot for storage, and a 200 mAh LiPo in the kit. The chip also brings DMA and programmable I/O along for the ride, so you can push pixels to the ST7735 without burning every cycle in the main loop.
Why the hacking angle matters
Most handhelds hide their guts. Rev0 does the opposite: GPIO is broken out, functional blocks are labeled on the silkscreen, and an expansion port exposes GPIO, I2C, and UART. Hang an accelerometer off the I2C lines and you have a tilt-controlled game. Hang a serial radio off UART and two boards can talk to each other. It is a RISC-V dev board that happens to arrive with a screen, buttons, speaker, and battery already soldered on.
It enumerates as Arduino-compatible with no driver install, so if you already know the Arduino toolchain the first sketch upload takes minutes, not an evening.
Try it
The $39 is early-adopter pricing that funds the rest of the development, and Arduboy expects volume production to bring it down. If you are sketching a capstone around embedded graphics, read the full board breakdown on Hackster first, then check the ST7735 pinout against whatever driver library you plan to use. The common gotcha on these 128 by 128 panels is a column offset of 2 pixels; if your sprites render shifted, that is the fix, not your code.
