How to Fix “Your Connection Is Not Private” Error in Chrome (2026)

Seeing “Your Connection Is Not Private” in Google Chrome can be confusing, especially when you are trying to access a website you trust.

This warning usually appears when Chrome cannot verify that the website's HTTPS connection is secure. In many cases, the problem is caused by an expired SSL certificate, incorrect date and time settings, DNS issues, browser cache, or a problem with the website's server configuration.

The good news is that most cases can be diagnosed and fixed without advanced technical knowledge.

In this guide, we'll explain what the “Your Connection Is Not Private” error means, why Chrome displays it, and what you can do to fix it safely in 2026.

What Does “Your Connection Is Not Private” Mean?

Chrome uses HTTPS to establish an encrypted connection between your browser and a website.

When you visit an HTTPS website, Chrome checks the site's SSL/TLS certificate to make sure the connection can be trusted.

If Chrome cannot validate the certificate, it may display:

“Your Connection Is Not Private”

You may also see an error code such as:

• NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID
• NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID
• NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID
• NET::ERR_CERT_REVOKED
• NET::ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM

The specific error code can provide a clue about what is causing the problem.

Why Does Chrome Show This Error?

There are several possible reasons.

The most common include:

• Expired SSL certificate
• SSL certificate issued for the wrong domain
• Incorrect computer date or time
• Missing certificate chain
• DNS problems
• Browser cache issues
• Antivirus HTTPS inspection
• Public Wi-Fi login requirements
• Incorrect server configuration
• Recently changed DNS records

Sometimes the problem is on your device. In other cases, the website itself needs to fix its SSL configuration.

1. Check Your Computer's Date and Time

An incorrect system date or time is one of the simplest causes of certificate errors.

SSL certificates have validity periods. If your computer's clock is significantly wrong, Chrome may think that the certificate is expired or has not yet become valid.

On Windows

Go to:

Settings → Time & language → Date & time

Enable automatic time synchronization and make sure the correct time zone is selected.

Then restart Chrome and try opening the website again.

On macOS

Open:

System Settings → General → Date & Time

Enable automatic date and time.

Once the system clock is corrected, test the website again.

2. Refresh the Page

Sometimes the error can occur because of a temporary connection problem.

Try:

Ctrl + R

or:

Ctrl + Shift + R

The second option performs a harder refresh and can help when cached resources are causing problems.

If the warning continues, move on to the next steps.

3. Try Incognito Mode

Chrome extensions and cached browser data can sometimes interfere with website connections.

Open an Incognito window by pressing:

Ctrl + Shift + N

Then visit the website again.

If the website works correctly in Incognito mode, a browser extension or stored browser data may be responsible.

You can then disable extensions one by one to identify the problem.

4. Clear Chrome's Cache and Cookies

Corrupted or outdated browser data can occasionally cause connection problems.

In Chrome, open:

Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data

Select cached images and files.

You can also clear cookies if necessary, although this may sign you out of websites.

After clearing the data, close and reopen Chrome and test the website again.

5. Check the SSL Certificate

If the error appears only on one website, the problem may be with the website's SSL certificate.

Click the warning or connection information near the address bar and inspect the certificate details if Chrome provides them.

Look for:

• Certificate expiration
• Domain name
• Certificate issuer
• Certificate validity
• Certificate chain

If the certificate is expired or issued for a different domain, the website owner needs to correct the SSL configuration.

6. Check Whether the Website Uses the Correct Domain

A common SSL problem occurs when the certificate does not cover the domain being visited.

For example, a certificate might cover:

example.com

but not:

www.example.com

Modern SSL certificates can include multiple domains and subdomains through Subject Alternative Names (SANs), but the requested hostname still needs to be covered.

If the certificate does not match the domain, Chrome can display:

NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

The solution is usually to install or renew a certificate that covers the correct hostname.

7. Check the SSL Certificate Expiration Date

SSL certificates are not valid forever.

If a certificate expires and is not renewed, browsers can immediately start showing security warnings.

Website owners should monitor certificate expiration and ensure automatic renewal is working correctly.

If you manage your own hosting server, check whether your SSL certificate was successfully renewed.

A certificate renewal failure can happen because of:

• DNS problems
• Failed domain validation
• Incorrect web server configuration
• Blocked validation requests
• Expired authorization
• Incorrect permissions

8. Check Your DNS Records

DNS determines where your domain points.

If DNS records were recently changed, your domain may temporarily resolve to a server that does not have the correct SSL certificate.

For example:

Domain → Old Server

instead of:

Domain → New Server

The new server may have a different certificate configuration, resulting in a certificate mismatch.

Check your:

• A records
• AAAA records
• CNAME records
• Nameservers
• CDN configuration

DNS propagation can also cause users in different locations to reach different servers temporarily.

9. Flush Your DNS Cache

If your computer is using outdated DNS information, flushing the local DNS cache may help.

Windows

Open Command Prompt and run:

ipconfig /flushdns

You should receive a confirmation that the DNS resolver cache has been successfully cleared.

Restart Chrome and test the website again.

macOS

DNS cache commands vary by macOS version, so it is generally better to restart the system or follow the appropriate DNS cache procedure for your current version.

10. Try Another Network

If the website works on one network but not another, the problem may be related to the network rather than Chrome.

Try switching between:

• Home Wi-Fi
• Mobile hotspot
• Office network
• Another Wi-Fi connection

This can help identify whether DNS filtering, network interception, or a public Wi-Fi authentication page is involved.

11. Public Wi-Fi Can Cause This Error

Public Wi-Fi networks sometimes require you to sign in through a captive portal.

If you immediately try to access an HTTPS website before completing the Wi-Fi login process, Chrome may display a privacy warning.

Connect to the network and complete the login or acceptance page first.

Then try opening the website again.

This is common at:

• Hotels
• Airports
• Cafes
• Airports
• Shopping centers
• Public offices

12. Temporarily Check Antivirus HTTPS Scanning

Some antivirus and security applications inspect HTTPS traffic.

If their certificate interception or filtering mechanism is misconfigured, Chrome may display certificate warnings.

If you suspect your security software is responsible, check its HTTPS or encrypted-traffic inspection settings.

Avoid permanently disabling security protection just to bypass the warning.

Instead, update the security software or check its documentation for the correct configuration.

13. Update Chrome

Using an outdated browser can cause compatibility and certificate-related problems.

Open Chrome and go to:

Settings → About Chrome

Chrome will automatically check for available updates.

Install the latest version and restart the browser.

Keeping Chrome updated also provides important security and compatibility improvements.

14. Restart Your Router

A temporary network or DNS issue can sometimes be resolved by restarting your router.

Turn the router off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.

Once your internet connection is restored, try accessing the website again.

If the problem affects only one website, however, restarting the router is unlikely to fix an expired or incorrectly configured SSL certificate on that website.

15. What If the Error Happens Only on One Website?

This is an important clue.

If other HTTPS websites work normally but one particular website shows “Your Connection Is Not Private,” the problem is more likely to be on that website.

Possible causes include:

• Expired SSL certificate
• Incorrect certificate installation
• Domain mismatch
• Missing intermediate certificate
• Incorrect server configuration
• DNS pointing to the wrong server
• CDN SSL configuration issue

In this situation, repeatedly changing Chrome settings will probably not solve the underlying problem.

The website administrator needs to check the SSL and server configuration.

16. What If the Error Happens on Every Website?

If Chrome displays privacy warnings on many unrelated HTTPS websites, investigate your own device and network.

Check:

• Date and time
• Chrome version
• Antivirus/security software
• DNS configuration
• Network connection
• Browser extensions
• Operating system updates Try another browser and another network.

If the issue continues across multiple browsers and networks, further investigation of the computer's security configuration may be necessary.

Should You Click “Proceed Anyway”?

Chrome may sometimes provide an advanced option allowing you to continue to a website despite the certificate warning.

You should not ignore the warning automatically.

A certificate warning can indicate that the connection cannot be securely authenticated. Depending on the cause, continuing could expose you to risks such as phishing or interception.

If you do not control the website and are unsure why the warning appears, it is safer to stop and verify the website before proceeding.

Never enter passwords, payment information, or other sensitive data on a website showing an unexpected certificate warning.

How Website Owners Can Fix the Error

If you manage the website, start by checking the certificate and server configuration.

Verify:

• SSL certificate is valid
• Domain name matches the certificate
• Certificate chain is complete
• HTTPS is configured correctly
• DNS points to the correct server
• Port 443 is accessible
• CDN SSL settings are correct
• Automatic certificate renewal is working

For Linux servers, you should also check your web server configuration and certificate files.

For Apache and Nginx, incorrect SSL configuration can cause browser certificate errors even when a valid certificate exists.

How to Prevent SSL Certificate Problems

Website owners can reduce future SSL issues by automating certificate management.

Good practices include:

• Use automatic certificate renewal
• Monitor certificate expiration
• Keep DNS records accurate
• Test HTTPS after server migrations
• Monitor SSL configuration
• Keep server software updated
• Check both root and www versions of the domain
• Verify CDN and origin SSL settings

Automated monitoring is especially useful for websites where an unexpected certificate expiration could cause downtime or lost visitors.

Final Thoughts

The “Your Connection Is Not Private” error in Chrome usually means that the browser cannot verify the security certificate presented by the website.

If the problem occurs on one website, check the site's SSL certificate, domain configuration, DNS, and server settings.

If it occurs across many websites, investigate your computer's date and time, browser, security software, DNS, and network connection.

Most importantly, don't treat the warning as something to simply bypass. HTTPS certificate validation exists to protect users from connecting to an untrusted or incorrectly configured destination.

Once the underlying cause is identified, the solution is usually straightforward.
