Building a SaaS product is only half the challenge. Getting the right people to discover it can be just as difficult.
You can have a technically excellent product, a fast website, and useful documentation, but if nobody knows your company exists, organic growth can remain slow. This is where content marketing, digital PR, and strategic link building can help.
However, link building has changed significantly. Simply collecting hundreds of backlinks isn't a sustainable SEO strategy anymore. SaaS companies need to focus on relevance, authority, context, and genuine value.
Here are some practical approaches worth considering.
- Create Content Developers Actually Want to Reference
The easiest way to earn a backlink is to publish something worth linking to.
For SaaS and technology companies, this could include:
API documentation and technical guides
Original research
Industry benchmarks
Open-source tools
Detailed tutorials
Case studies
Developer resources
Comparison guides
Data-driven reports
For example, instead of publishing another generic article about "Benefits of Cloud Computing," a SaaS company could publish a detailed performance comparison based on its own testing.
Original information gives other websites a reason to reference your content.
- Focus on Relevant Websites
One relevant backlink can be more useful than dozens of unrelated links.
If you operate a CRM platform, websites covering software, sales technology, customer experience, SaaS, business automation, or digital marketing are generally more relevant than completely unrelated websites.
Before pursuing a placement, evaluate:
Is the website relevant to your industry?
Does it have real organic traffic?
Is the content useful and well maintained?
Does the site have a genuine audience?
Are links placed naturally within relevant content?
This approach helps build a backlink profile that makes sense rather than simply increasing the number of referring domains.
- Use Guest Contributions Strategically
Guest posting can still be useful when the objective is to contribute something valuable rather than publish thin content solely for a link.
Start by identifying publications that already discuss your industry. Then pitch a topic that fills a genuine content gap.
For example, a developer-focused SaaS company might contribute:
"How to Design an API Integration That Developers Actually Enjoy Using"
That's more useful than submitting an article titled "Top 10 Benefits of SaaS."
The goal should be to give the publication something its readers genuinely want to read.
- Make Outreach Personal
Mass emails with generic templates rarely create strong relationships.
Before contacting an editor, spend a few minutes understanding the publication. Look at its recent articles, target audience, preferred topics, and writing style.
A good outreach email can briefly explain:
Why you're contacting the publication.
Why the proposed topic fits its audience.
What unique information you can provide.
Why you're qualified to contribute.
Keep it short and specific.
- Find Opportunities Efficiently
Researching suitable websites manually can take considerable time, especially when running campaigns across multiple industries.
Platforms such as Guest Post Discovery can help marketers discover guest posting opportunities based on niche and website metrics. Instead of searching randomly, marketers can use this type of resource to build a more focused prospect list and then manually evaluate the websites before reaching out.
The important part is still the evaluation. Metrics such as DA or DR can help with initial research, but they shouldn't be the only criteria for deciding whether a website is valuable.
- Don't Ignore Digital PR
SaaS companies often have interesting stories that can generate editorial coverage.
Product launches, funding announcements, original research, technology trends, executive insights, and industry data can all become potential PR opportunities.
Instead of asking journalists for a backlink, provide something newsworthy.
For example:
Weak pitch:
"We launched our new SaaS platform. Please link to us."
Stronger pitch:
"Our analysis of 50,000 SaaS support tickets found three recurring reasons customers abandon self-service onboarding."
The second idea provides journalists with information they can actually use.
- Measure More Than Domain Authority
SEO teams often focus heavily on metrics such as Domain Authority or Domain Rating.
These metrics can be useful for prospecting, but they don't tell the entire story.
Also consider:
Organic traffic
Top-ranking keywords
Topical relevance
Audience quality
Editorial standards
Link placement
Referral traffic
Brand visibility
Publication consistency
A smaller technology publication with a highly relevant audience may ultimately be more valuable to a SaaS company than a high-metric website with no connection to its industry.
- Build Relationships, Not Just Links
The best outreach campaigns can develop into long-term publisher relationships.
An editor who accepts one genuinely useful contribution may be open to future expert commentary, research, interviews, or additional articles.
Likewise, a journalist who finds your data useful today may contact you for expert insight on a future story.
This is why outreach should be treated as relationship building rather than a simple transaction.
Final Thoughts
SaaS link building in 2026 is less about collecting as many links as possible and more about earning visibility in the right places.
Create useful content, target relevant publications, personalize your outreach, contribute genuine expertise, and evaluate websites beyond basic SEO metrics.
Most importantly, think about the reader first.
When your content is genuinely useful to an audience, backlinks become a natural by-product of building authority rather than the sole reason for publishing.
