Most arguments are not disagreements.
They are two people answering questions the other person never asked.
You hear the first half of what someone says, your brain fills in the rest, and you respond to the version you invented.
They do the same back.
And now you are both frustrated, defending positions the other one does not even hold.
There is a simple habit that dissolves most of this.
Before you answer, check what you heard.
Say it back in your own words.
So what you are saying is you want to ship this week even if the tests are not complete, is that right?
Then wait.
Half the time they say no, that is not what I meant at all, and the whole conversation resets on solid ground.
The other half they say yes, exactly, and now you are actually responding to their real point instead of your guess about it.
This feels slow.
It is not.
It is far faster than the twenty minute misunderstanding you avoid.
And it does something else, quietly.
It tells the other person they were heard.
So much tension in a conversation is really just someone feeling like they are not landing.
They push harder, repeat themselves, get louder, because they do not think you got it.
The moment you reflect their point back accurately, they relax.
They no longer have to fight to be understood.
Now the real conversation can begin.
This works everywhere.
In a design debate.
In a hard talk with your manager.
In a disagreement with someone you love.
Check what you heard before you answer.
You will be shocked how often you were about to argue with something they never said.
Understanding first.
Responding second.
That order changes everything.
